Toilet Pull Handle

Contributed by Radio producer

This pull handle for a high level toilet cistern carries the name J Rankin Sanitary Engineer, Enniskillen. It dates back to the 1930s. My father worked for the company and he then passed on his skills to me, as I am now a plumber myself. I came across the hand pull one day when I was doing a bathroom renovation. I have never seen another one like it. The hand pull is art deco in design. This style originated in Europe, particularly Paris, in the early 20th century but the look did not become really popular until after the First World War. This object shows you that the design ideas from Paris had even made their way to Fermanagh! Contributed by Kevin Tapster during the AHOW event at Enniskillen Library.
