I bought this at a car-boot sale and what's fascinating is the accompanying letter, which claims the object is part of the remains of Captain Cook's ship the Endeavour. If the letter is correct then this is a coral imprint of one of the ship's cannons.

A lot of material including 6 cannon were heaved overboard when the Endeavour ran onto a coral reef on the eastern coast of Australia in June 1770. The cannon were found 199 years later encrusted in coral and lifted off the sea floor. One is now in the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Check out the story here:
