Eliza Bunt Diary

Contributed by HMS Trincomalee Hartlepool

Pages from the 1818 Diary of Eliza Bunt

Unique record of a female passenger aboard HMS Trincomalee on her maiden voyageEliza Bunt married John Bunt in 1816. He was a boatswain and fought at Trafalgar and in 1810 boatswain in HMS Victory before moving to the yard at Trincomalee in Ceylon [now Sri Lanka]. He died in 1818 and Eliza found passage home with her two children in the newly built HMS Trincomalee.

Eliza kept a diary of the five month passage to England and this diary was found by a descendant Mary Hope Monnery some ten years ago. The diary remains in very good condition for its age. It offers a fascinating account of the conditions and dangers associated with living in a ship at sea more than 190 years ago.
