My Granddad worked in the mines with this Davy lamp nearly 40 years ago in Doncaster. He told me a story about what it was like to work down the mine in Doncaster with only this small lamp to see. He also told me about how years ago before the Davy lamp had been invented the miners used to take a Canary bird down the mines with them to detect whether there was any poisonous gases down there. They did this because the birds would die before the men. This small Davy lamp has been the result of lots of history learning.
I think that this Davy lamp should be included in the history of the world challenge because it is very famous for the people who worked with Davy lamps in the mines in Doncaster. The mining trade is a very important part of Doncaster's history - it is amazing to think that so many people risked their lives to earn money for their families doing such a hard job.
Sir Humphrey Davy was the man who created the Davy lamp, he invented it for the miners so that they could see whilst at work. It was a great invention for all mining villages and especially for my Granddad.
