One of the most fascinating and talented women of the 18th century, Mary Delany was an artist, needlewoman, gardener and society figure. In her many letters she chronicled her friendships with leading figures of the day from royalty to Handel, Swift and Sir Joseph Banks. This remarkable portrait, on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, was painted when she was 82 years old and has an elaborate gilded frame designed with detailing that gives 'visual clues' to her many talents.
