This Roman drain cover slab was found at Bothwellhaugh Roman Fort, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and was picked by Shauna Joy, second year student at the University of Glasgow (Single Honours Archaeology). Shauna writes - This drain cover slab would have been used by the Romans to cover the drains, which were unsanitary and probably smelled bad, to stop anyone or anything falling in there. Slabs like this would have been found in association with baths and toilets and drainage systems for carrying away sewage. Such systems would have been found all over the Roman Empire. This artefact is a good piece of evidence of Roman civilisation in Scotland, would have been an important aspect in everyday life and a remnant of Roman engineering, which is why I think it is important and interesting.
