Wagons were made for doing hard work. They needed to be strong but flexible and light enough for a horse to pull. Wagons were constructed from locally grown woods, particularly oak, ash and elm. The special qualities of the different kinds of wood were all useful in building wagons.
This Somerset 'box' wagon was made by Fredrick Lois of High Ham for L.J. Taylor of Eastern Farm, Pedwell, on the Polden Hills. It is the kind of wagon used by a farmer to take goods to the local market.
