This photograph dates back to the 1890s. It shows a family wedding and included in the crowd is my great-great grandfather - William David Evans - and many of his brothers and sisters. The picture was taken behind the carriers business that the family ran in Crickhowell in Breckonshire.
The man on the right is Lord Glanusk, one of the Bailey family, who were the local iron masters and owned a lot of land in the Esk Valley. The family is still prominent there today.
The bride is Emily Evans and the groom is William James. The James family owned the flannel mill in Glangrwyney and one of the James family who were behind the Welsh national anthem "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau", usually translated as "Land of My Fathers". The words were written by Evan James and the tune composed by his son, James James. Of course the anthem is now sung all over the world, particularly at Welsh international rugby matches.
