The invalid wheelchair as we know was developed in Bath in the mid-18th century as a comfortable alternative to the Sedan Chair and for moving invalids visiting the spa to and from their lodgings. This chair, decorated in the High Victorian style, is an exceptional item having been displayed at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851. One of the few survivors of exhibits sent from Bath this chair features unique paintings of the four seasons painted the three panels of the chair.
