Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928) was a Scottish artist, designer and architect. This elaborate mirror was part of the bedroom suite that he designed for his new marital home at 120 Mains Street.
This distinctive sculptural piece of furniture is made from white painted oak, with pink glass insets and silvered brass handles on two rows of tiny drawers, which were probably used by his wife Margaret for small personal items.
Mackintosh was inspired by nature and used plant forms in much of the detailing: leaf-shapes, petals and plant stems.
This was one of three cheval mirrors that Mackintosh designed. It was exhibited in Vienna together with a selection of other objects in 1900, where it was described as being like an upturned sledge!
This object from the collection of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery was selected by Monica Callaghan who created the Mackintosh House Relic Challenge.
