A Blue Peter badge is the much sought-after prize on the long running children's show, Blue Peter. Badges are given for appearing on the show, or in recognition of a range of achievements.
The idea of the badge began in 1963, and very quickly the simple white plastic shield bearing the distinctive blue ship logo became a highly desirable object.
It has had a variety of re-designs, plus there are now 6 different types of badge - including a green one for environmental work and a gold one awarded for acts of extreme bravery - but its ethos remains constant.

I got an ordinary one and a silver one, and kept them in a little box lined with cotton wool. Unfortunately They got lost at some point in the last 40 years. I got one of them for painting a picture of Petra, the first dog. Can't remember what the other one was for, but I was very proud of them.
My husband won a Blue Peter badge, in a photography competition in 1963. He still has the badge, the letter from Biddy Baxter and the winning photograph. But he was on a school exchange trip at the time the programme was broadcast and has never seen it. I did see the programme. So imagine my surprise when we first met, a decade later, and I saw the winning photo in one of his albums. I recognised it immediately (it was very cute). It felt as though I must have met him before.
