Willian Murdoch was the inventor of Gas Lighting but also worked in Cornwall with James Watt (Boulton and Watt) on steam engines but left there in the late 1790's and returned to Scotland. This model is potentially the start of the transport revolution. It is the model for a steam road engine that he was working on in the 1790's and represents the birth of the steam locomotive. It is the only known model of a successful steam road engine of the time. The object was gifted to the Smith Museum in the mid 20th century by a Stirling resident but with no information on its connection to Murdoch.
