The Roebuck Collection

View of Hill Top, Starbotton by Herbert Royle (1870 - 1958)

Herbert Royle was a local artist living and working in Craven and the surrounding area. This particular painting is of the house that Clem Roebuck lived in for many years in Starbotton, and is one of a pair. Clem Roebuck was a local patron of the arts who bequeathed his collection of 143 prints, paintings and sculpture in 1988. The collection is very eclectic and features works of great diversity, representing a range of artistic styles, themes, different periods and includes paintings of local interest and international importance. Many of the paintings in the collection, including this one, have a personal significance to Roebuck whether it be a souvenir from a holiday or painted by a local artist.
