Mummy of Hor

Contributed by Swansea Museum

Field Marshal Lord Francis Wallace Grenfell (1841 - 1925) was born in Swansea, and went into the army rather than the family copper business. In 1882 he was posted to Egypt, becoming Commander in Chief of the British army there by 1885. He was greatly interested in archaeology and Egyptian history, obtaining the Mummy of Hor with the help of British Museum archaeologist Wallis Budge, and gifting it to the Royal Institution of South Wales, which is now Swansea Museum. Also included was the mummy's coffin and other small funeral items.
