This book belonged to my grandfather, F. Washbrook, a ship's steward on the Tonso which went from Hull to Petrograd. He was stuck in Petrograd in 1914 due to the 1st World War. I have a photo of him on the deck of his ice-bound ship. He got home by travelling overland partly. During the 2nd World War my father, HE Washbrook, served on the Ulster Queen and used the manual whilst in Murmansk and Archangel. Father and son signed their names and dates in the book.
To me it is remarkable that 2 Washbrooks found themselves in Russia during 2 wars and symbolises the way war dominated European history during the 20th century.
