This bottle containing Crosse and Blackwell 'Pure Currie Powder' arrived on Alderney by somewhat dubious means. Alderney's rocky coastline coupled with some of the fastest tidal streams in the world has lead to numerous shipwrecks. At one time Alderney's inhabitants acquired a reputation of 'rescuing' cargo from shipwrecks. The Liverpool, a large four-master, was one such wreck. She hit rocks in dense fog whilst carrying a wide variety of consumables. Much of the cargo was saved and shipped to Guernsey or the mainland, but some, inexplicably, could not be accounted for.
