SuperTed's first language was Welsh.Did you know Superted's first language was Welsh? Created by Siriol Animation, he was the first star of S4C, the Welsh-language TV channel. The channel's first broadcast - and Superted's first appearance - was on 1 November 1982.
S4C came into being after a prolonged protest campaign by language activists. The nationalist politician Gwynfor Evans threatened to go on hunger strike if the Government didn't honour its promise to provide a Welsh-language TV service. The Government eventually capitulated.
S4C and the success of SuperTed effectively kickstarted the animation industry in Wales, which has since gone from strength to strength. SuperTed became the first British animation to be acquired by the Disney Channel in the US. Other classics followed such as Wil Cwac Cwac, Fireman Sam, Legend of Lochnagar, Shakespeare: The Animated Tales and The Miracle Maker. Animated films from Wales are now enjoyed all over the world.
