Cockerel pattern dish, Llanelly Pottery. About 1900.
The cockerel plate or dish is probably the best known pattern produced by the Llanelly Pottery. The pottery closed in 1922 and these cockerel plates were made in its last years. The testimony of workers who remembered working in the factory in its last years was that the cockerel plates were painted by one woman, Sarah Roberts. They remembered her as very pleasant woman, who painted with her left hand. Many of the Llanelly pottery's hand painted patterns produced between the 1900s and its closure were direct copies of the wares produced by the Pountney factory at Bristol. However, the Llanelli cockerel plate seems to have been an original pattern.
