This rare Roman statuette of Fortuna from the collection of the Hunterian Museum was selected by Louisa Hammersley, postgraduate student at the Department of Archaeology, University of Glasgow. Louisa writes - This sandstone carved statuette of Fortuna was recovered from the bath-house interior at Castlecary fort by workmen looking for stone to construct the nearby Forth and Clyde canal in 1769. The robed Fortuna bares one shoulder, carries a long stemmed cornucopia in her left hand and her right hand holds a rudder resting upon a six-spoked wheel. All of these are familiar attributes of Fortuna, demonstrating her authority over human affairs.
