Dead Ringers was an immediate success with the Radio 4 audience from its first episode, broadcast on 7 January 2000. The original cast was made up of Alistair McGowan, Jon Culshaw, Simon Lipson and Kate Robbins.
These days the dozens of characters featured in the show are the work of a cast which is made up of just four talented people: Kevin Connelly, Jon Culshaw, Mark Perry and Jan Ravens. Phil Cornwell are occasionally guests on the show.
Writers Nev Fountain, Tom Jamieson, Laurence Howarth and Jon Holmes keep the show topical, constantly revising scripts right up until the show鈥檚 Thursday read-through at 3pm. The show is then performed a few hours later in front of a live audience, edited the next day and broadcast in the evening.
Working to these deadlines means the show can lampoon people involved in that week鈥檚 current events: from politicians to footballers, from celebrities to soap stars.
But perhaps what most delights the audience is the recurrent theme of jokes about Radio 4 shows and personalities: 鈥淭he Daddy鈥 Brian Perkins, Michael Caine-manque Greg Dyke and sultry sex-kitten Charlotte Green.
The show has won numerous awards, including a Sony Gold and Award for Best Radio Show at the British Comedy Awards. |
