Treating, curing and preventing disease - OCR Gateway Effects of antibiotics and antiseptics on bacteria

Pathogens are everywhere. The body has evolved defences that act to prevent pathogens entering it. If a pathogen does enter the body then the immune system helps to fight it off.

Calculating the effect of antibiotics & antiseptics on bacteria growth

The effectiveness of the chosen antibiotic or antiseptic can be measured numerically by using the formula \(\pi r^{2}\).

The effectiveness of the chosen antibiotic or antiseptic can be measured numerically by using the formula 蟺r2. Using the diagram

Method

  1. For \(\pi\) use 3.14. This value may vary slightly in a specific question.
  2. Measure the of the zone of inhibition and divide it by 2. This gives you the radius, \(r\).
  3. Use the equation: \(\pi r^{2}\)

For example:

The diameter of the clear area around chemical 2 is 10 mm.

The radius is \(\frac{\text{10}}{\text{2}}\) = 5 mm.

Using the equation to find the area gives:

3.14 脳 25

= 78.5 mm2
