An important role of the American government is to protect the rights of the people.

The American Declaration of Independence states that Americans have unalienable rights, which all branches of government must respect and protect.

It reads:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

One role of the US government is to protect the rights of the American people. The same rights are given to every American without exception.
