Strategies to reduce uneven development
There have been a variety of international strategies to reduce uneven development. These range from popular campaigns such as 'Make Poverty History' to the actions of multilateral aid organisations such as UNICEF.
UNICEF has initiated a range of strategies such as:
- Education - Girls' education has been promoted through the African Girls Education Initiative (AGEI) which improves the school environment through providing equipment and solar-powered laptops. In addition, there has been a focus on women's rights including increasing awareness of birth registration, discouraging early marriage, and promoting nutrition.
- Health - UNICEF has also tried to improve the health and nutrition programme through Local Immunisation Days (LIDs) and National Immunisation Days (NIDs) as well as the promotional sale of mosquito nets. In addition, the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) strategy reduced infant mortality through developing vaccination programmes.
- Food security - The Integrated Basic Services (IBS) scheme aimed to increase household food security through the stockpiling of reserves of food, so that when households face food insecurity, food can be given out.
