This type of question requires you to explain why something happened or what effects it had, so you need to show good knowledge and understanding as well as a concept such as impact, significance or how far things changed or stayed the same.

Examples:

  • What was the impact of on medieval England? Support your answer with examples.
  • Why were 鈥榚nemy during the two world wars? Support your answer with examples.
  • Why were different groups of treated so differently between 1550 and 1750? Support your answer with examples.

Tips:

  • There will be more than one answer and more than one example you will need to use.
  • List the points you want to make and the examples to support them, and then decide on your main point. For example, for the first of the above questions you could include new skills such as brewing beer and weaving woollen cloth, conflicts between and kings, violent incidents such as the massacres during the Peasants鈥 Revolt, and the rise of . However, you may feel that the most significant impact was the transformation of the English economy. You therefore need to plan your answer so that you include all your points but build up to your main idea.
