How do we communicate to others how hot or cold something is? A demonstration of freezing and boiling points, and standard measurements of temperature.

Before watching this clip students could be asked to touch some very cold water or a warm hot-water bottle and be asked to describe the temperature. They could share their opinions on how hot or cold each is and discuss the need for a scale of standard measurement. A thermometer could be used to accurately measure the temperature of the cold water and the hot water bottle, paying close attention to skill of reading a thermometer. Students could also measure and record the temperature outside at different times of the day.
