Climate zones

Description

The weather changes in different parts of the world. Where there are similar weather patterns this is known as a climate. At the top of the Earth there is an arctic climate and some of the coldest temperatures in the world are found here. Temperate climates are found a bit further south, so as you approach the equator you find Mediterranean and desert climates. Some of the hottest places on Earth are found here, with few people living in this climate. The tropical climate at the equator gets gradually cooler the further south you travel before reaching the Antarctic.

Classroom Ideas

Using world map outlines, students could use different colours to convey the different climates, labelling them or creating their own climate key. Students could go on to describe how the climate could affect living things in each area such as plants, animals and humans, adding notes and pictures to their maps.
