The importance of Lindisfarne for the Vikings

Description

Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, was one of the first landing sites of the Vikings. Monasteries were places where monks lived and worshipped. Most people respected the monks and gave them money and gifts for their monasteries; however, the Vikings committed terrible violence against the Monks at Lindisfarne.

Classroom Ideas

Students could take on the role of a Viking chief, rallying their army for their journey across the sea and to battle at Lindisfarne. They could prepare a speech to motivate the men, describing why they are going to Lindisfarne, what they hope to achieve there and what benefits it could bring. They could also describe the journey, perhaps referencing maps or a globe.

Alternatively, students could use accounts of these attacks as stimulus to imagine what it was like for the monks and people living in Lindisfarne when the Vikings invaded. They could role-play this scene or write about it in a piece of creative writing from the point of view of the inhabitants.
