Radioactive emissions
Description
During a comic book convention, Ayla and Aiysha meet an old super-hero, Alpha-man. Ada the science app takes this opportunity to explain radioactive emissions. Three forms of radioactive emissions are discussed, alpha, beta and gamma along with their penetrating and ionising powers. Also discussed are various every day uses for each type of radiation and finally they are compared through strength and relative speed.
Classroom Ideas
Show the penetrating power of alpha, beta and gamma radiation by using a Geiger Muller tube and different materials. Compare alpha, beta and gamma radiation to rugby players thus demonstrating their penetrating and ionising power; alpha would be a prop who is strong and big but slow etc. Use the animations to describe which radiation would be most dangerous inside and which would be most dangerous outside the body.
