As well as talking about yourself in terms of your name and age in Mandarin, it can be useful to be able to talk about body parts.

Did you know?

Mandarin does not make any difference between singular and plural, ie you do not add an ¡®s¡¯ or change the word form as in ¡®mouse¡¯ and ¡®mice¡¯.

This means that ¡®½Å Âá¾±¨£´Ç¡¯ means both ¡®foot¡¯ and ¡®feet¡¯.

You can combine these body parts with the Mandarin phrase ÕâÊÇ Zh¨¨ sh¨¬ (This is), for example:

ÕâÊÇÎҵıÇ×Ó Zh¨¨ sh¨¬ w¨¯ de b¨ª zi - This is my nose

If you want to say a part of your body is hurting, you can add the Mandarin word 'ÌÛ ³Ù¨¦²Ô²µ' (hurt).

For example:

• ÎÒÍ·ÌÛ W¨¯ ³Ù¨®³Ü ³Ù¨¦²Ô²µ - My head hurts

• ÎÒ¶Ç×ÓÌÛ W¨¯ d¨´ zi ³Ù¨¦²Ô²µ - My stomach hurts

• ÎÒÑÛ¾¦ÌÛ W¨¯ y¨£n j¨©ng ³Ù¨¦²Ô²µ - My eyes hurt

When describing parts of the body in Mandarin, you need to know some common adjectives.

So, to say ¡®My hair is short¡¯ in Mandarin, you would say:

ÎÒµÄÍ··¢¶Ì W¨¯ de ³Ù¨®³Ü fa »å³Ü¨£²Ô - My hair is short

You could also use the word ºÜ ³ó¨§²Ô (very) in Mandarin before the body part for emphasis.

Hair and eye colour in Mandarin

Some examples for using colours to describe your eyes and hair in Mandarin include:

• ÎÒµÄÑÛ¾¦ÊÇÀ¶É«µÄ W¨¯ de y¨£n j¨©ng sh¨¬ l¨¢n s¨¨ de - My eyes are blue

• ÎÒµÄÍ··¢ÊǺìÉ«µÄ W¨¯ de ³Ù¨®³Ü fa sh¨¬ h¨®ng s¨¨ de - My hair is red
