Description
The First Past the Post voting system is used for elections to the House of Commons.
Classroom Ideas
This could be used as a stimulus for discussion of advantages and disadvantages of the Single Transferable Vote. To further illustrate voting systems, the teacher could lead 鈥榅 Factor鈥 simulations on bands/pop stars. 鈥楳ost popular鈥 votes could be counted using the First Past The Post system and again with Proportional Representation to compare and contrast the results. Students could then be asked to complete an extended written response on the advantages and disadvantages of First Past the Post.
