Insider pressure groups
Description
The Scottish Council for Single Homeless lobbies parliamentary civil servants directly and takes part in committee meetings to work towards a long term policy on homelessness. Sometimes the government will directly approach a pressure group for advice. This can give a group like Age Concern more influence but also brings greater accountability. Business lobbyists also work to ensure that politicians consider commercial concerns in their decision making.
Classroom Ideas
This clip could be used to illustrate the work of insider pressure groups. Students could undertake further research into the effectiveness of insider pressure groups and they could also be encouraged to examine the effectiveness of insider pressure groups compared to outsider pressure groups. How modern lobbying works could be discussed in more detail. What influence do funding, personal connections and other factors have? Is lobbying a fair practice and what, if any, controls should be in place to police it?
