Description

The First Past the Post voting system is used for elections to the House of Commons.

Classroom Ideas

This could be used as a stimulus for discussion of advantages and disadvantages of the Single Transferable Vote. To further illustrate voting systems, the teacher could lead ‘X Factor’ simulations on bands/pop stars. ‘Most popular’ votes could be counted using the First Past The Post system and again with Proportional Representation to compare and contrast the results.
