MIXTAPE 5 SUGGESTIONS AND QUESTIONS FOR JON RONSON

Post categories:

Adam Buxton Adam Buxton | 15:00 UK time, Monday, 26 April 2010

Hello blog pals, even the blog pals who gave me a hard time for filling in for Jonathan Ross on Radio 2 a few weeks back and creating some toe curling radio by trying to cheer up the miserable Modfather with some light Grease-based humour. Boy, there's really no pleasing some people!

Ìý

Anyway, it's that time again. I'm recording my 5th Big Mix Tape this week and the working title is Wave Of New Relations. It's that most Nick Hornbyocious of mix tapes: the compilation for a new boyfriend or girlfriend with all the musical double thinking and showing off that entails. I have a fairly clear idea of what I'm putting on there but if you have any tracks that you think I would be insane to miss, please do let me know. I'm also compiling a list of songs that should not under any circumstances be used on a compilation for a new romantic friend. That's a friend with whom you have recently become romantic, not a member of Spandau Ballet. Anyway your suggestions for songs to avoid on the New Relations mix would be extremely welcome.

Ìý

Finally I would be deeply indebted if you could contribute a few questions for my guest this week, the journalist, radio & TV documentary maker, author of books like Them and The Men Who Stare At Goats, and tickler of conspiracy theorists, extremists and nutbars both harmless and frightening: Jon Ronson. There's a lot to ask him about and I'll do my best to put as many of your enquiries to him as I can, after I've concluded my own addled and rambling interrogation obviously. I'll do my best to avoid Grease jokes.

Ìý

Thanks!

Ìý

Love Adam oOO000OOoxXXXxo0ox

    Hey Adam.

Ask him what it's like having a spoonerism-approved name, please.

  • Comment number 2.

I would certainly steer clear of 'Every Breath You Take' for sheer creepiness, 'Creep' for sheer creepiness and 'Orgasm Addict'... for sheer creepiness.

I would suggest 'And I Remember Every Kiss' by Jens Lekman, providing the couple in question have previously kissed.

Looking forward to waking up with you Adam... so, so much.

    Hugs

  • Comment number 3.

    HELLO!
Not knowing who the heck Jon is, I don't have any proper questions.

    Tango or Fanta?
    7Up or Sprite?

Yup, that's it. But it IS a Monday.

(If you get bored you could always see if Andrew and Richard would like you on their swearier show..?)

  • Comment number 4.

    How about . . .

    Who are you?
    What do you do?
    Faves?
    Worsties?

  • Comment number 5.

'Nuclear War' by Yo La Tengo should be avoided.

  • Comment number 6.

I'd like to know if Jon was sad that Omar Bakri Muhammad was deported, apart from everything he said he always seemed such a nice chap in Jon's Guardian Weekend column.
    Also, tracks to avoid...
    Breaking Up - Rilo Kiley
This is the End - The Charlatans

  • Comment number 7.

I have song requests but and a question.

Does Your Heart Go Boom? - Helen Love
    and
This Modern Love by Bloc Party

Me and my girlfriend both made mixtapes for each other when we first started seeing each other. The songs that stick out are these two and she chose Helen Love for her tape and I picked Bloc Party, two awesome songs. Everytime I hear either I always think of our first summer together very VERY good times.

I think you would be crazy not to include these or at least mention them! :)

    Question:
    Super Noodles or Pot Noodles?

    Good luck for the show.

  • Comment number 8.

Whoopsy. I forgot "Who do you do?"

I miss you and Joe, Count Buckules. But I really like the mixtape show!

  • Comment number 9.

If you can get hold of it, 'I'd Like To' by XTC (from Apple Venus Vol 1) is a sweet and cheeky song perfect for such a compilation....also good is 'This is Love' by PJ Harvey, and I also vote for 'Suspicion' by REM, a very under-appreciated and lovely song.

  • Comment number 10.

I'd like to hear what or who Jon Ronson would store in his nutty room.

Failing that, does he think any of the techniques from 'goats' would work when trying to seduce a beautiful woman/handsome chap? (Not that I'll be seducing beautiful women or handsome men, I'm getting married in July... I'm just asking for all those peeps trying to meet someone they can make a mix tape for.)

  • Comment number 11.

    Song suggestions:

Slices of You - By electric six
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You
    Madness - My Girl
    ---------------------

Whats the most insane conspiracy theory you have heard, come across or made up inside your own head?

Head of The New World Order?

Are Twiglets really evil Nik Naks?

Scientologists or Penguins: Who are they, where are they and why are they.

    And Finally

What is the true meaning and reason behind the Penguin Jokes?

  • Comment number 12.

Wow, Jon Ronson, cool. Questions questions:

    1. What single mystery would you like the answer to?

    2. What's the biggest change in your world view as a result of your investigations through the years?
For example, does the world seem more stupid or more scary?

    3. Would you rather have the ability to fly or be invisible?

    Thanks!

By the by, Adam, I've been really enjoying the shows, but isn't it time for a lady-guest?
I suggest Mel C or, failing that, Hillary Clinton.

  • Comment number 13.

hey ad,really enjoying the shows u really are some kind of genius, not sure what kind but some kind....
could u ask jon, when he was in the kubrick estate filming "boxes" did it feel as though stanley was still there even tho he sadly had passed away.it certainly felt whilst watching the (brilliant) documentary that kubrick was still pullling the strings from beyond the grave which was a little eerie..and did he see scatman crothers hanging around?

  • Comment number 14.

Just for the comedy/creepy value, can I suggest Freak Me by Another Level!! :)

Also, I feel I really should hear this Radio 2! Sounds wickles! Is there anywhere that has it? I've checked the iPlayer but it's gone now...

  • Comment number 15.

    Really enjoying the show Adam!

A question for Jon, has he got any made up jokes? Haha.

Still missing good ol' buckulees and cornballs. By the way, is it just me or is there only 11 out of the dozen easter podcasts?

  • Comment number 16.

Q: Have you spoken to Amy Winehouse lately?

  • Comment number 17.

    Q's for Jon Ronson
Has he chatted to any of the other famous ex-Cardiff High School pupils about his school days?
Getting your book made into a movie - Good or Bad experience?
Who would win in a fight you or the Theroux?

Song for the mix tape - It Must be Love the Labi Siffre original!

  • Comment number 18.

Ooooh and Nick Drake - Northern Sky

  • Comment number 19.

    @katj39

yeah i counted 11 - im thinking a and j are getting a special bundle of new nuggets together for number 12 ;)

  • Comment number 20.

Little question for Jon: I'm wondering what the status is currently on the film of "Them: Adventures with Extremists". Is it still with Big Talk and does Jon walk away from it once it's sold or keep involved? Loved "Men Who Stare at Goats", btw.

@katj39 & @petra eujane if you look here you'll see that the first Big Mixtape podcast was one of the dozen. Either that, or they foolishly let Joe get involved and he's probably convinced that a 'dozen' is eleven. (Aaaw - love you, Joe O0XPXPX0O).

I reckon Adam has refused to have a lady guest until James agrees to book Jamelia.

  • Comment number 21.

    Yo Buckles! Mixtapewise:

Just What I Needed - The Cars - The Cars
There She Goes My Beautiful World - Lyre of Orpheus - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Shelter From the Storm - Blood on the Tracks - Bobbo

    Ones to Avoid:

Everything Put Together Falls Apart - Paul Simon - Paul Simon (Obv)
Animal - Vs. - Pearl Jam
A Man Needs a Maid - Harvest - Neil Young

  • Comment number 22.

barbed wire love - stiff little fingers

i'm making eyes at you - black kids

    pirate love - johnny thunders

    cindarella - the sonics

BANG. great compilation tape right there - done your job for you doctor buckles, so you can get back to performing surgery or writing jingles...

  • Comment number 23.

How come the email address isn't working? :s

  • Comment number 24.

I have beautiful memories of my boyfriend singing the lyrics of The Lovecats by The Cure to me in a packed and sweaty SU bar - "You're so wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully pretty ..." It was so good that I married him.

One to avoid - Girlfriend in a Coma by The Smiths.

Really enjoying the new show Buckules, thanks for making me chuckle again. Loveyoubye xoxoxox.

  • Comment number 25.

Please please please play "Don't", the last track off Dinosaur Jr's Bug album. It's a song to melt the hardest lady heart.

I suppose technically it belongs more on the don't-ever-play playlist, but still.

    Question for Mr Ronson:
Are you the Jon that I want? Hoo hoo hoo, honey.

  • Comment number 26.

    Hey Adam!

I wanted to share an idea I had for a future mixtape theme. Its a pretty tricky one but I think with some serious thought it could be done. The basic idea is that each song is a cover of the next artist on the compilation. I have tried doing this in my head before and got quite far but its really hard and I can't remember the songs I chose but I usually start with The Shins covering Postal Service's 'We Become Silhouettes' followed by Postal Service covering Flaming Lips 'Suddenly Everything Has Changed' and then there are a choice of songs that Flaming Lips have covered and my head explodes thinking of all the possible permutations.

The chain itself isn't that hard though really. You can use www.coversproject.com to help. The real holy grail is a mixtape which does all this and then ends on a cover of the first artist on the tape creating a never ending cycle of songs which would necessarily stretch unstoppably into infinity and thus prevent evil sneaky people from shutting down 6 Music. I had hoped that this would turn out to be the plot of the Michael Cera film 'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist' but I watched it and it wasn't and it turned out to be poo so I urge you to consider my suggestion for a future show seriously,

    Lots of love,

    Billy Payne

  • Comment number 27.

    Hey Buckles!

Two songs to definately steer clear from are "Used to Love Her" by Guns N Roses and "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell.

The latter has particularly happened to me whilst listening to the radio with a new partner.

    Love you, Bye!

    Your Australian friend.

  • Comment number 28.

    DO: Crazy In Love- Beyonce
    Love Me Girl- Yeasayer
DON'T: Leave Before the Lights Come On- Arctic Monkeys
Conquista (Spanish Version)- The White Stripes
    Not Made for Love- Metronomy

  • Comment number 29.

(Another) DO: If You're Into It - Flight of the Conchords

  • Comment number 30.

    Hey Dr Buckules,

    Songs for lovers,
Faves: Air - All I Need
Worsties: Black Keys - Psychotic Girl
    Jedward? Definitely not!

Keep up the good work, love you byeeeeee XxOoXxOoXxOo!

  • Comment number 31.

Song suggestion: In My Family by Sparks (from Kimono My House)

Nimrod's Son by Pixies probably not a good idea to put on a compilation for a new loved one.

Can you ask Jon Ronson to say hello to our friend James? My husband got Jon's autograph for James at a Randy Newman gig and I'd like to try and top that!

Cheers then love you bye xxxxxXxxxxxxxxXXXXoooOOOOOo

  • Comment number 32.

I hummed that XTC song all the way home and I of course got the title wrong there, it's called I'D LIKE THAT.

I'd love to hear Andy Partridge on the radio. Could you get him as a guest? Perhaps his mix tape could be about nature songs...there's always some buzzing/ birds singing / things growing in the best XTC songs...

  • Comment number 33.

I would like to second OddAmerican's suggestion of 'If You're Into It' by Flight of the Conchords.

And how about 'Special Bath' by Count Buckules?

  • Comment number 34.

'If...' by the Divine Comedy? A creepy song to show that you're not creepy and have a wickles sense of humour!

'Kate' by Ben Folds Five? The subtext being, I think you're as cool as the girl in this song.

'All I want is You' by Barry Louis Polisar - sickly sweet but rather lovely.

  • Comment number 35.

I enjoyed you chatting with Louis Theroux! I thought yesterday, that the episode of weid weekends when he was investigating rap, when he did some rapping at the end he sounded just like when you did rapping on one of the song wars songs (i think, or maybe a jingle). I think you should do a "Middle Class British Rapper Collaboration".

  • Comment number 36.

I've Got an Itchy Bum by J.Cornballs should probably be avoided.

  • Comment number 37.

I also agree with The Conchords' If you're Into it suggestion. Genius!

  • Comment number 38.

    Hi Adam,

I love this week's theme c'est tres bon!

I would recommend Autumn Sweater by Yo La Tengo. Never has such a beautiful niose been made by so few instruments *sigh*. In order to confirm cool credentials perhaps you could include Sometimes by Les Rhythms Digitales. Maybe then you could jazz it up a bit with Here Comes Your Man by the Pixies.Perhaps also a bit of Little Red Corvette by Prince to encourage some lying down tickling?

Finally, but only if the other person has a superior sense of humour, I would say Business Time by Flight of the Conchords...

    Hoorah!

  • Comment number 39.

Not necessarily appropriate but it so beautiful: Fin - Supergrass

  • Comment number 40.

Barbra Streisand's Woman in Love - possibly the most scary song of all time, what with lyrics like; 'hold you within' it’s a mad love prison. It gives me the hebbie-jebbies.

Question to Jon Ronson: 'Do you find staring at goats conducive to pulling'.

  • Comment number 41.

Question for Jon: How many goats can you count before you fall asleep?

  • Comment number 42.

    Hey Senor Buckles!

I would have to pick ‘Temptation Of Adam’ by Josh Ritter as a mustie for New Relations comp.

For those who don’t know it’s a story about two strangers who are forced to share an underground bunker together during an imaginary cold war and fall in love, largely because of the place they find themselves. Oddest subject matter for a love song and the story is what makes it’s fantasticness.

Question for JR – What law could we impose to stop the other Ronson from ever being allowed near a recording studio ever again?

  • Comment number 43.

Hope I didn't add to any Weller-gate embarrassment about by pointing the link out to Blog Squadron Dr Buckstein! I vacillated, but ultimately decided on balance you and the squadders wouldn't come to serious harm. If it made you bellow with rage like Brian Blessed, then I'm sorry (but also a tiny bit amused).

Very revealing meet with King Louis. When you were discussing the tantrum kid who freaked out at losing board games etc, I kept thinking of a few wobbly Song Wars moments where equipment (and possibly people) in the studio seemed at risk...

So far only the only Mixtape lacking a hairy guest has been the Garth Jennings one. The testosterone must be getting pretty thick in the bunker. How about getting your mum in to balance things up? I've heard you mention her multiple times, and must admit the lady somewhat intrigues me!

First romantic mix tape no-nos. Some are obvious only when you bear some of the lyrics in mind...

    Enya - Sail Away
    Stooges - No Fun
    Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
    Sleeper - Inbetweener
The White Stripes – There's No Home for You Here
    Dylan - Idiot Wind/Positively 4th Street
Mozza - The More You Ignore Me Closer I Get/Suedehead
PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me
    AC/DC Highway To Hell
    L7 - Monster
Carly Simon - You're So Vain
Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills
    Shins - Turn on me
    Sex Pistols - No Feelings
    NIN - Head like hole
    Beck - Loser
Joe Dolce - Shadappa yer face
Fun boy Three - Tunnel of love
The Royal Guardsmen - Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron
Queen - Another one bites the dust
[Especially avoid the next 2 if the name matches]
    Bad Manners - Lorraine
Lou Reed - Caroline Says 1+2
    Ludacris - Ho
Any music used at the Neuremburg Rallies

On a more proactive note - 'Thank You' by the Zeppers is a peach that expertly straddles the line between tenderness and manly b@lls to the wall rock. Roxy Music - Love is the drug, Marvin Gaye - Let's get it on, and Prince - Darling Nikki (only if her name's Nicola though!) cover the 'sexy' angle pretty well.

Marry Song ["when you smile, the sun it peeks throught the clouds.."]
Bowie - Be my wuz, er wife
    Smog - Held
Dusty Springfield - I just don't know what to do with myself
    Minnie Ripperton - Les Fleur

The above are extremely heavy weaponry only to be used with extreme caution, but should convince her she's not dealing with someone who's going to slob out on the couch in front of TV sport with a six pack on a Saturday. If you go ahead and do that anyway, be prepared for some highly toxic fallout.

    ---

Jon - Do you ever find yourself liking someone you've interviewed, then feeling guilty about it? Also, what was it like working with noted pumpkinhead Frank Sidebottom? Is he ever normal?

  • Comment number 44.

if you got together after a messy one night stand i'd avoid:
emmy the great - we almost had a baby

  • Comment number 45.

Hi, Adam. Great shows. I liked the standing in for J Ross, I thought it was a pity that you guys only did it for 2 weeks. When JR leaves, i reckon you'd be great in that slot!

    As for new relations...
    Songs to keep:

    China Girl/Modern Love - Bowie

We Have all the time in the World - Louis Armstrong

The Look of Love - ABC

The Look of Love - Dusty Springfield

    Sunday Girl - Blondie

You make loving fun - Fleetwood Mac

Who wants to live forever - Queen

It must be love - Madness/Labi Siffre

Cars & Girls - Prefab Sprout.

Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison

Some of those songs may have lyrics that are opposed to the feeling the song gives me. For instance the Queen track is rather poignant in the film Highlander!

    Songs not to have:

    Sorrow - Bowie! Wuzza.

    Question for Jon Ronson:

What did he think of his time with Robert Llewellyn (Kryten) and his Carpool?

Once again thanks for all your work,

    Love You, Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 46.

    Hi Adam,

    Love the show!
Question for Jon Ronson: How did it feel when they took your book and turned into a one joke film about saying the words "Jedi Warrior" to Ewen McGregor?

Songs NOT to put on a mixtape for a new romance:

    ABC - Valentines Day
Aimee Mann - That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart
    Associates - Breakfast
Del Amitri - Driving With The Brakes On
    Love - Alone Again Or
Sparks - Falling In Love With Myself Again
    OMD - Souvenir

Songs to put on a new romance mixtape:
'95 aka Make Things Right - Lemon Jelly
Mirrorball - Everything But The Girl
    Wishful Thinking - China Crisis
123 Apple Tree - Hermann Dune
Love Over & Over - Kate & Anna McGarrigle
    A Smile & A Whisper - Fairground Attraction
    Oh Patti - Scritti Politti
I Wanna Stay Home - Jellyfish
    English Rose - The Jam
Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want - Dream Academy
Love Theme From Bladerunner - Vangelis
    Venus De Milo - Prince

    There we go..

  • Comment number 47.

Ask Jon if a giant alien ship came down from space, would the aliens have conspiracies as well, or are they simply a human phenomenon? Do they exist in the animal world, for example, stick insects are typically born in ant colonies, as this serves to protect and preserve the eggs, thus the first incantation of the creature resembles an ant, in order to afford it protection, now is this a conspiracy or simply deception?
Alternatively are there in fact no conspiracies, except the conspiracy theories themselves which are made up to keep the general public confused?

On a less brain tasking subject, would I benefit more by actually reading his books rather than listening to an audio version? And why is it acceptable for an author to get someone else to read their book (for an audio version) (which is surely simply lazy) whereas if a group perform someone else's song there is an uproar, as there seems to a loss of passion from the original artists intent? (Is it just that actors are better at keeping passion than musicians?)

  • Comment number 48.

    Hi Adam,

Loving the new show. It's a joy to hear you on the radio again! And you've reminded me of the joy of putting together mixtapes. Somehow, making playlists on itunes just isn't quite the same...

    So, some faves to suggest:

At Last, by Etta James is just the most gorgeous song in the world.
The You and Me Song by the Wannadies. It wonderfully and exuberantly captures the excitement of the early days of a relationship.
What You Do to Me, Teenage Fanclub. Lovely and yearning and sweet.

and ones to avoid AKA worsties:
it's Yer Money I'm After, by the Wonder Stuff. (while we're with them, Unbearable would also be a baaad.)
    Hag, by the Breeders
    Spinal Tap - Bitch School

    that's it. Weallloveyoubye!

  • Comment number 49.

    Hello Adam!

Firstly, can I recommend including the track Joga by Bjork. A wonderfully towering piece of odd-pop which cracks open down the middle and feels like that curious inner turmoil of the vertiginous feeling of falling for someone. Oh, and also it worked like a treat for me once on a compilation many years ago. Gooey lady ensued.

And, can you ask Jon a question I'm sure he's sick of, but is there anywhere to get hold of a copy of Secret Rulers of the World. I missed most of it first time around and now after having read Them, I really want to go back. The only online copy I could find is massively out of sync and entirely frustrating...

    Cheers

    BS

  • Comment number 50.

To Avoid - Nobody can Love Me Like i Love Myself by Popa Chubby
    - Big Legged Woman by Freddie King
    - Mobile Phone by Kevin Eldon and the cassettes
    - Crazy Frog
    - You Dont Love me by Willie Cobbs

Good one's to have would be any song that your girlfriend turns out to like. It's tough to guess the mind of a woman.

  • Comment number 51.

    Questions for Mr Ronson:

    1. Matches or lighter?
    2. Hair dryer or let it dry naturally?
    3. Analogue or digital?

    love,
    AK

  • Comment number 52.

I hope this isn't like a job application and you only read the first 50...

    Do - If You're Into It/Conchords
    Don't - Thinking About You/Radiohead

Additional Intro Question - Why do you do?
Ronson Question - Do you like trumpets too?
Question for Adam - What's Clegg REALLY like?

PS. I was listening to some old podcasts the other day - boy was Joe on fire! I miss that guy.

  • Comment number 53.

Hey Adam, Question for Jon, do you miss Frank Sidebottom?

  • Comment number 54.

Great host, great guests, great times...

Garth: 'Don't you find that when it's immediately not an issue?' Adam: 'No!'

    Superb.

My question for Jon is did he ever find a branch of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for his Pop?

    Cheers m'dears,

    Ann

  • Comment number 55.

Suggestion for Bowiesnacks: Ziggy Starburst and ciders from Mars

  • Comment number 56.

    Hi there,

I'd like to ask Jon how his cat Monty is. Don't want to be stalkerish but the bit in his fantatsic "Jon Ronson On" radio show where he overhears his neighbour doing a cruel impression of Jon saying "Monty Monty Monty Monty" while calling ths cat in has lodged itself deep in my subconcious.

ALso I discovered Randy Newman through Jon's programme about him and he's one of my favourites now. Any other musical suggestions?

  • Comment number 57.

    Hello Adam,

In the light of the current political invasion of all forms of media, thought it might be good to inject some of that into your show. Not that its not high-brow enough. Its very high-brow. So high I think they've vanished beyond your forehead.

OK - so here goes. Did you know Nick Clegg when you went to Westminster school?

    OK bye.

  • Comment number 58.

I don't know any getting together songs.
But if you ever make a break up compilation to wallow in misery then hey I'm in!!

    Velvet Underground - These Days
    Fleetwood Mac - The Chain

Loved the last show with Louis.....Much respect for playing Boards of Canada :)Keep the Bowie stuff coming. It makes me chuckle

    Bye

  • Comment number 60.

After RACKING (wracking?) my brain for romantic songs I only found these few

Billie Holiday & Ella Fitzgerald - what a difference a day makes (A bit overused but still a good song)
Joe Cocker - You Can Leave Your Hat On
Jimmie Durante - You Made Me Love You
Velvet Underground - Crimson and Clover
Eric Clapton & BB King - Come Rain Or Come Shine
Sting & Clapton - It's Probably Me (Lethal Weapon soundtrack, which is a bit bromancey but still)
Fiona Apple - Please Send Me Someone To Love
Fink - Pretty Little Thing (excellent song)
George Demure - Forgive Me Eliza [also excellent]
    Portishead - Sour times
Joe Purdy - I Love the Rain the Most
    M. Ward - Never Had Nobody Like You
Iggy Pop - I Wanna Be Your Dog (Maybe for someone who's may be the S&M type)

arrrg romance is hard work, Apologies if some of the above is cheeseballs.

this is a great and funny song
    Lord Kitchener - Dr. Kitch.

hello there Adam, i listen to your podcast as i run home from work. It takes 40 mins on the dot. As your podcast lasts a bit longer I often have to walk the house with my headphones on missing the offer of 'what do you want for tea' usually resulting in me getting something rubbish like overcooked chicken burgers. I was wondering if you could perhaps knock 5 mins off your podcast to avoid this inconvenience. Yours Thankfully CatLover MMMmmMM
