Episode 2: 'Appy Days

Ìý

MEEEEOOOOOOUUUU! MEEEEOOOOOOUUUU!

Annoying even when you read it, right? Yet somehow Edna's team of cacophonous ladies managed to pull the cat out of the bag by emerging victorious in Lord Sugar's appetising App task.ÌýÌý

It's best to deploy an amnesty on App related puns from now on, given Vincent's appalling (d'oh!) effort in the back of the cab. Following his issues with orange detection in the first task, he managed to drop another fruity folly with THAT "app-le" pun. It's only a matter of time before Vincent has some kind of plum-related mishap…

Alex was the fall guy for Team Logic, an eventuality that could be traced back to Nick Hewer's prophetic squint after he declared there were "better men" to lead the task. Not even his sterling (and in no way racially stereotypical!) enactment of a Welsh farmer for the Slangatang campaign could spare him. Let's just hope he can find those sheep… although they could be cowering in fear after hearing Melody's vocalisations of their fellow animals.

Is there a brewing 'bromance' going on between Leon and Jim? The knowing wink that Jim gave his spared teammate in the house after his boardroom survival seems to suggest so, given that Leon had already changed his decision to bring him back to face a firing. Special powers of persuasion appear to be part of the Soup Man's strengths.

Who would have given Team Venture a chance of winning after Edna's Ampi-App pitch at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre? It was a bizarre manifestation of David Brent fused with the Jim'll Fix It theme tune lyrics, as she strutted around the stage promising to "share a secret with YOU, with YOU and with YOU" to the aghast audience of 500.Ìý What about the other 497 in attendance?

They turned out not to be that in important in the end, as Team Venture's success in landing the support of a major online magazine proved pivotal in their triumph. This was despite their App featuring an image of an elephant accompanied by the sound of a dog. The world's first Bestial Identity App – genius!

"How strange folk can be," remarked Lord Sugar upon learning of the girls' victory in the download stakes. He could just as easily have leveled that comment at the boys for their outfits (which were in no way racially stereotypical!) at the Earls Court presentation.

The boys must have been regretting their decision not to pick Thomas up on his traffic light App idea. Hours of fun to be had with that gem! Well, only if you have the mind of a vegetable. Or should that be vegatable, Ellie?

"Is that victory I taste on my lips?" remarked Melody at the celebratory dinner. No dear, it's probably a furball. MEEEEOOOOOUUUU!

Can you please bring out slangatang again thanks

Why oh why were the subtitles so terrible tonight? Last night's first episode was subtitled with perfection, dialogue shown in par with spoken dialogue. The Apprentice is pre-recorded and it is not rocket science to see how difficult and frustrating it can be for deaf and hard of hearing viewers to enjoy this programme if the subtitles come on 15 seconds after spoken dialogue, particularly when it is absolutely possible to get it right! Lord Sugar speaks really quickly, and the Board room dialogue is terribly difficult to enjoy if we read subtitles 15 seconds after!

I hasten to add, without wanting to become a Victor-Meldrew - that all of the video clips on the Apprentice website have no subtitles - whereas ´óÏó´«Ã½ I-player has this function. Why do we get forgotten so easily? It would have been really easy to implement your end!

    The Apprentice look-a-likes

    1. Leon Doyle - James Frain (Thomas Cromwell, The Tudors)
    2. Felicity Jackson - LeAnne Rhimes (Country Singer)
    3. Vincent Disneur - David Bentley (Birmingham City Football Player)
    4. Jim Eastwood - Carl Froch (Boxer)
    5. Gaving Winstanley - Jason Done (Tom Clarkson, Waterloo Road)

Vincent is Eric Idle in the nudge nudge wink wink sketch!

Here is my poem for Episode 2

Team Logic created an App but they lost
so it must have been ( not very good)
Now Alex is wishing he hadn't gone missing
cos Alan just gave him a slap!

I was very impressed with Jim's use of the Jedi Mind Trick in the Boardroom!
"I'm not the scapegoat you're looking for!"
"You need to choose somebody else!"
    And it worked... This time.

Just checked out and it seems to be a program (SoundBoom) whch lets you create your own soundboard!

Who are these JamPot guys? Did they write the apps for The Apprentice?

this week was a bit of an aberration and it arose specifically because not enough time is alloewed for brainstorming, analysis and decision-making at the start of the task. Presumably this suits the programme makers and leads to 'odd' results but it would be interesting to give the candidates a chance to use their skills at the planning stage sometimes perhaps. Looking at the candidates it is pretty clear, especially among the women, that a lot of weak candidates have to go. And what about ageism - shouldn't older entrepreneurs be included in future programmes? women especially come to business later in life - how about it Lord Sugar?

I spotted as soon as they went for the idea that the guys app idea would only have a chance at the UK market, why would someone in China download a UK regional accents app. The girl’s app was equally rubbish in any language however which is what one it for them. The idea was rubbish, the execution bad, and the name awful I can’t figure why wired went for it.

I never write comments but just wanted to point something out. In the 'your fired' programme, Karen Brady made the point that the 'programme is what it is' and that it is not as a result of editorial tinkering. However.....

In the clip when they wanted to illustrate team logics reaction to losing to the girls, they had the scores read out and had a smile and then that was wiped off when the girls' score was revealed. However the faces in team logic had already dropped after the full 24 hr score was read out....the smiles used were actually from the fact that they had 3000 after 6 hours....

I feel really petty writing this but i dont like to be made to believe that it is not edited when this is really one of many examples of where it is!!

I have to say that i really enjoyed the show last night and was straight on the phone, the power of press.

I could not find the App for Android, went on this morning and there is 2 apps (1 is a squatter, but 1 is the app).

After playing with both apps SLANGATANG and AMPI APPS I have to agree that AMPI APPS is much better.

I found them on the store by just searching under the App names if anyone is interested.

  • Comment number 12.

Vincent = Mickey Pearce from Only Fools and Horses

MB - It appears some enterprising wags have quickly slapped up apps with the same name to try to make a bit of cash via search traffic - it wasn't Jampot making the apps.

I was really interested in yesterday's episode as I'm an app developer myself - I stuck a few thoughts on my corporate blog:

Go Jim! It is all about participation, not sitting on the fence watching, Leon perhaps needs to become a politician with the 'U' turns achieved in the boardroom! The right person was 'fired' last night, if you are part of a team, you play the game. On the subject of playing the game, perhaps its wise to allow those who have the necessary skills to put their 'gifts' on the line instead of needing to be in the limelight just for the sake of it, it doesnt work Edna. Ellie where was your creative input in all of this? Tom as an inventor you talk a lot of sense - 'put your money where your mouth is', and girls- Pleeeease cut the pouts!

  • Comment number 15.

Anyone know what piano music is played at 33.12???!

  • Comment number 16.

I thought it was the funniest episode I'd seen in ages. Darth Jim the Jedi mind warrior using his powers on Leon to avoid getting taken into the boardroom being the highlight for me! My take on it

Some fantastic lookalikes already! Anyone thought of any more?
