Gym Class Heroes - 'Cupid's Chokehold'

OK, if the band can re-release the song, I can re-release the review. Here it is...it's like February all over again!

==================================

gymclass.jpgIn flower-growing circles, there's a thing called 'cross-pollination', where you take the man-pollen out of one type of flower and use it to fertilise the lady area of a different type of flower to see what interesting new blooms can be created (pure FILTH, if you ask me). You check with your biology teacher if this all sounds made-up...

And this is the equivalent for music. You've got the hip hop pollen, which is being taken from the sweaty stamens (don't shout, mother, it's a flower word, honest!) of the Gym Class boys, and it is being rubbed all over Fall Out Boy's not-massively-urban record label Fuelled By Ramen, until a new growth emerges.

But, to make things even more complicated, Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump has generated his own pollen in the form of the chorus to this song, which is nicked from the chorus to an old song by Supertramp (who were basically the Feeling, only ages ago). So there's an added extra, a really old, classic pollen, like the sort you'd get out of a magnificent rose, only re-created for modern times, which would make it the pollen of a magnificent rose which can receive emails and text messages.

But never mind all that, I hear you snooze, what's the bloom like? Well, its nice hip hop. The kind of hip hop which won't steal your wallet, make off with your girlfriend (or girl friend), and then mock you for not having any money or girls.

It's the kind of nice hip hop which is about being loved up with a nice lady, only because it's hip hop, it's quite funny, rather than dead soppy...hence the 'shut up! I don't even LIKE her, OKAY?' quality to the song's title...which, to round up today's extended metaphor, would make this song the kind of chrysanthemum which smells amazing, looks gorgeous, but has to be called 'I Wanted To Be A Tulip, Actually', so that no-one thinks the florists made it on purpose...

BOYS, eh?

Three starsReleased: February 12th April 30th

And, just cos I like you, here's a little featurette about the making of the band's video.

    The band is around 10 years old but I don't think that's what you mean :P Their album was released last year and that's when their name began to get chucked around more as far as I know.
