Candie Payne - 'One More Chance'

Candie PayneA recent bio of Candie Payne described her as 鈥淣ancy Sinatra meeting Dido鈥 (owww, my ears!). Mark Ronson, who produces her latest single, pictures her as "a mixture of '60s Dusty Springfield and Mika" (owww, my eyes!). So essentially what we should be expecting from 鈥極ne More Chance鈥 is this: a slice of heavenly '60s-style pop fabulousness, with a sprinkle of 21st century somethingness (sorry, the leap from Dido to Mika is something I don鈥檛 even want to consider).

For the most part, with 'One More Chance', you鈥檙e getting a good copy of yer D Springfield-type popstrel (although with a little less soul). A sweet voice, striking a chord between old-school pop and country, a wall of triumphant, vibrant orchestration that contrasts with the lovelorn lyrics in the foreground (thank you Mr Ronson and his influences). So far, so tried and tested to the 6Ts pop rool.

But where鈥檚 the modern somethingness? Essentially, this could be an unheard gem that鈥檚 just been uncovered in a dusty corner of ye olde pop vaults. And for some, that鈥檚 a recommendation. It doesn鈥檛 put me off. But wouldn鈥檛 it be great if there were something in here that couldn鈥檛 have been done at any other time but now?

Wouldn鈥檛 it be good if it reflected the fact that something more than some technical developments in the recording of sound had happened in the past 40 years? If it made yer old school songsters sit up and take notice rather than sit back cosily remembering the old days?

Call me lazy for comparing yer Payne to yer Winehouse (Chartblog readers shout in unison: "Lazy!"), but sharing a producer (even if its just for this song in Payne鈥檚 case) and a retro sound is bound to draw comparisons.

Candie might apply her eyeliner more neatly, but Winehouse currently owns the patent on moderned up old soul. No reason why they can't exist in the same world, but if you're looking for a real naughties girl who can cast the aching depths of her soul in mp3 *and* vinyl, it's gonna be yer Winehouse every time innit?

However, think how happy the record company will be if they can get an nth of La Winehouse audience, bearing in mind her recent 'emotional' troubles.

But, if you are planning on getting people to buy records, I would suggest using comparisons of people who can actually sing rather than 鈥淣ancy Sinatra meeting Dido鈥, something that suggests the sound of a distressed platypus.
