The White Stripes - 'You Don't Know What Love Is'
Is it possible for a song to be any MORE White Stripes than this is? There must be music students all over the world whose major project is to write a song in the 'contempory idiom of Jack White', and they would KILL have come up with something as complete and all-encompassing as this. It's like one of those condensed fruit drinks which claim to have all five of your daily portions, only with White Stripes albums, and there are six portions.
So, if you happen to be one of these people, and seeing as Jack as done half of your homework for you, allow me to do the other half, the bit where you have to show your working.
Things which are very White Stripes which appear in this song:
Thing one: Meg White's neanderthal drumming and 'Hammer Of Thor' cymbal work.
Thing two: Music stabs. Guitars are used as massive brickbats to punctuate the monolithic drumming.
Thing three: Helium twiddles for a guitar solo.
Thing four: Song structure loosely based on '60s beat group classic. In this case 'Son of A Baker' by the Small Faces.
Thing five: Some unknown friend gets a dressing-down from Jack for being more than a little naive and lacking moral fibre.
Thing six: Loose tambourine playing.
Thing seven: Lots of different dynamics. Loud bits, quiet bits, soft bits, hard bits.
Thing eight: Shouts from the background.
Thing nine: Tasty riff-work. And lots of it.
Things which are not very White Stripes which do not appear in this song:
Thing one: Kate Nash on backing vocals
Thing two: An introduction from Jay-Z and an intermission from 50 Cent.
Thing three: Lyrical examination of the perils of going out clubbing in Sheffield.
Thing four: A Mark Ronson horn arrangement.
Thing five: A guitar solo from Patrick Stump.
Thing six: A bass guitar.
There, now if you don't get an A from all that, your teacher is a buffoon.
