30 Seconds To Mars - 'From Yesterday'
I tell you what, Tom Delonge must be LIVID with jealousy right now. Not that he'd ever admit it, but c'mon, he must be spitting fire and fury from one end of his dusty I-Empire to the other. There he is, hard at work creating an exciting fusion of U2-styled epic rock, infused with the sugar-rush immediacy of pop-punk and a good dark splat of gothic drama, but does anyone bar a few die-hard Blink fans care? They do not.
Meanwhile, some actor guy from Hollywood (yes, yes, so he was a singer first, this is Tom Delonge's internal monologue here, not yours, OK?) comes strolling in out of nowhere, and takes over. He's got better cheekbones, a lower hairline (and therefore less forehead), a less monotonous voice, songs which are melodically different to one another (and are in different keys), and an even grander sense of of the potential enormity and wonder to be found within an electric guitar's delay pedal. Piddling considerations, really, but suddenly people are handing out awards like there was a 2-for-1 offer at the trophy shop. I mean HOW fickle?
Seveal ChartBlog regulars (hi guys!) have declared this song to be among their favourites of last year, and it's not hard to see why. It lacks none of the scope, panic and bluster of it's predecessor (the super-epic 'The Kill', in case you've got this far without having any idea who the band are, in which case, well done! That's a heck of a lot of dedication you've just shown to the blogged word), but is somehow less scarily melodramatic.
Oh sure, Jared is howling his melodic anguish as much as he did last time, and the lyrics are just as intense, but you get the impression he means it this time. It sounds less like he's written an angsty song because angsty songs are what the kids are really into these days, if you see what I mean. This might be just because it's the second breakthrough 30 STM song, rather than the first, but either way, it sounds like an improvement to me. Plus the chorus is better. So there!
It's odd though, cos normally the very LAST thing which improves a song is the addition of a bunch of delayed U2-istic guitars, but there we are.
Not that this is any comfort for Mr Delonge, of course. Ah well...

I Love 30 Seconds To Mars!!
there new song is really good. and i love all there stuff
Ah wow! First a BfMV review and now a 30STM review, this really is a great week.
And to top it all off I'm pretty sure the bit about the Chartblog regulars was a nod to me? So, hey back at ya!
Anyway, down to the song. Ilove it, but then you already know that, so on to Tom Delonge. He DOES have a big forehead and +44 are way better than A&A.
Loved "The Kill", although I didn't pay nearly as much attention to 30 Seconds as I probably should have. Don't worry - will rectify that situation soon!
I Love 30 STM
All their stuff rocks! it's their best song yet. it isnt played nearly as much as it should be.
I looove 30stm so much.
&this song, although personally I prefer The Kill.
I don't get why though, you've given it two stars when I got the impression from your review you thought it was good?
Hmm..
[Bah! Sorry. That was me pulling the wrong graphic in. It's all fixed now! - Fraser]
'That's a heck of a lot of dedication you've just shown to the blogged word.'
I show GREAT dedication to the blogged word - it's an education, that's what it is!
The thing is, the more you read, the more you've heard of, in time...how philosophical!
[That's certainly the plan! - Fraser]
30STM are great, no doubt about that....but why would Tom DeLonge be jealous? AVA and 30STM are totally different styles. I thought 'A beautiful lie' and 'I-Empire' were both good albums.
