Mr Hudson ft. Kanye West - 'Supernova'
Man, it must KILL Kanye West that he can't sing. I mean sure, he's lucky that the overvocodered throatal wobulator is such a hot sound right now, and he's definitely getting kudos for using technology to overcome his vocal deficiencies. And on his album '808s And Heartbreak' it made a certain kind of sense to force his weedy voice to stretch and warp and twist like Mr Fantastic trying to put a flea-collar on a wasp, in a cathedral. That was just part of his journey as an artist, and it's a good journey, with many interesting twists and turns.
But still...put him next to someone who can actually sing, and sing in a manner which is sonically appealing, and things start to come apart. And I'm guessing Mr West is not a man who ever enjoys being the weakest element in a tune.
(. Someone's been fiddling with the saturation control on this telly...)
Nevertheless, he does have a very important role to play, which is to draw attention to Ben Hudson and his almighty talent. Here are just two of the things which, on the evidence of this song along, Ben Hudson can do very, very well:
1: Write a song.
2: Sing a song.
In the light of the opening paragraph above, you may want to pay particular attention to point two there. Ben Hudson shares a husky choirboy sort of vocal tone with Peter Gabriel, and he puts it to very good use on the chorus here, which pleads and begs and cajoles as it tells itself off for letting that special girl slip through its buttery grasp. Of course, it all goes a bit awry when Kanye's yodel-vocoder kicks in, especially when we've already heard someone doing it properly.
Weirdly, once you're past the verses, which are so '80s you can practically hear the rustle of shoulder-pads, there is something of the Scouting For Girls going on here. It's probably the chords spiralling up and up, and the chanted "you've got it wrong if you say our love is gone" section, which is only missing a blokey man shouting about James Bond or Elvis over the top to complete the picture.
But it is all good. Scouting For Girls have their place, robotic frosty songs with a human heart have their place, making yourself sound foolish with the autotune has its place, and thanks to this, Ben Hudson now has his place too.

As soon as I heard it , I just knew that in time it would be a huge hit !
I think my first mention of this song was on May 22nd on the Little Boots review for "New in town ".
Everything works in this song , the structure , the build up , the momentum , the melody and of course , most importantly of all , the huge , memorable chorus , which is the centrepoint of the song .
When Kanye first heard this song , many moons ago , he knew it was special ! He wanted to be involved.
His input has been very successful in bringing added interest to an excellent song , and the talent of Ben Hudson. (Kanye , you sure know a tune ! )
I have stirred interest in this song everywhere for the last few months , because it's one of those that enthralled me from day one...
Kanye West and Mr Hudson never made the top 40 with their last single "Paranoid " , but expect "Supernova " to go top 20 , or even be a top 10 hit.

Good tune, one of my favourites at the moment. Improved massively by the presence of Kanye West, though I'm glad he is singing with auto tune instead of rapping because it just wouldn't go.
I am waiting for Kanye to release another rap album though! Or even just a single. Please!!!!

It is well documented why he had to write " 808's and Heartbreak " , given life's slings and arrows of outrageous mis-fortune , and all his followers understood that it was something he HAD to do .
His input on " Supernova " and " Knock you down " is stellar and immense , and I wish him great songs and success for the future.

There are loads of singers out there who have sang on or have contributed great songs to the world , but would not win a series of X- Factor.
1) David Bowie
2) Mick Jagger
3) John Lennon
4) Marc Almond
5) Liam Gallagher

8) Matt Bellamy
9) Eminem
10)Kurt Cobain.
Now before we go on about people who can't sing perfectly , (but have loads of other skills and strengths in their cannon , that we could discuss ) , would you rather have the list above , or Eoghan Quigg who got to the final of X-FACTOR and CAN SING , rockin your world ?

These are all quite varied and personal songs , that show a lyrical depth and skill that illustrate varying emotions , and very far from driving a Ferrari in the sunshine.
The album version of "Diamonds " with Jay Z , shows huge lyrical awareness of a harrowing subject .
To me " The college drop out " is an outstanding album , that spoke to me on so many levels .

You know what? Since I'm not a musician, I'm never going openly dislike any piece of music I hear ever again. I'm also not much of a cook, so I guess that means if I have a bad meal at a restaurant, well, I'll just have to lump it. Come to think of it, I'm certainly not much good with any of the trades, so if I ever get some dodgy work done by a builder, joiner, plumber or decorator, well, I guess I'll just have to take what I get. After all, if I can't do any better, then what right do I have to an opinion, eh? Forget the fact that I'm a consumer - utterly irrelevant.
AKA, or whatever you're calling yourself now, do you understand what reviews are, and why people write and read them? If you do, and you think reviewers' opinions are irrelevant if they're not great musicians themselves, then great, I understand your logic. But then why are you in the "reviews" section of ChartBlog?
Some other questions:
Precisely what does Kanye West's material wealth have to do with the merits of his musical output?
Doesn't the sheer number of 4 and 5 star reviews this blog gives out indicate that the reviewers DO like pop music?
Does criticising Kanye's singing voice really qualify as "slating" him, considering in the same paragraph Fraser refers to it as part of his "good journey" as an artist?
Sigh.
