Justin Bieber - 'One Time'

The French have a very handy expression for times like these: "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose".

It means, "the more things change, the more they stay the same, when you come to think about it, yeah?", and it's perfect when you're trying to describe an internet phenomenon which seems very nowadays and new and ground-breaking, but at the same time totally familiar and normal and business-as-usual.

(. Just as well Usher didn't ask Justin to feed his rabbit too, or it'd be a total hutch par-TAY.)

In the olden days, when the word 'internet' meant the webbed gusset inside a pair of swimming shorts and a mobile phone came with a really long lead, the best way to get yourself a record deal was to perform covers of songs that you love in front of your peers, and try and become so amazing at this that your friends would tell other people to come and check you out, and they would tell their friends, and so on until you had built up a fanbase.

In the nowadays, people still sing covers, they still tell their friends, and those friends tell their friends and so on, but it all happens online. Which is good in one sense, because you can reach an audience all over the world, but bad in the sense that it's unlikely that people at your gigs would walk up to you in between songs and call you unspeakable names for daring to put your voice into a microphone within their earshot. Swings. Roundabouts.

That's what li'l Justin did (he's FIFTEEN!), and now he's a proper internet phenomenon. Screaming girls, massive tours, the works! All before his debut song has even hit the shops over here.

There's a really good reason for this: Justin can really properly sing. He's got a pretty quavering, tremulous voice that would really suit a song with, y'know, a tune. This is not that song, however. It has a note, and some swoopy bits, that's it. Whenever you think the chorus is gonna carry you away to somewhere else, he winds up back at that one note again, hammering on it like he's trying to send a message in morse code.

Also, some people can use the word 'shawty' in a song and make it sound affectionate. Some people just make it sound like abuse for the heightifically-challenged. It think it's an age thing. It always sounds like the kind of friendly thing a slightly older (and taller) person would say to a much-loved friend/girlfriend/boyfriend. Sean Kingston could never quite carry it off either, it just sounded like a child using grown-up words badly.

So, what have we learned? Well, firstly that talented people do tend to find their audience. Secondly, that the web is only really beginning to find its feet when it comes to discovering fresh talent.

And thirdly, that the point at which an exciting future turns into a slightly disappointing present is usually when 'the experts' get involved. As Joe McElderry now knows only too well.

hideously irritating. can he even spell the words he sings about, let alone feel them?

  • Comment number 2.

I want to vomit a little bit after hearing that song. I dont deny his .. talent.. I guess. But the song is awful and just feels wrong coming from some 15 year old.

  • Comment number 3.

I hate this song so much, he sounds like a girl and is incredibly annoying. Only plus side is that if I ever see the video on TV it has that talking bit at the beginning so I have enough time to escape before it starts.

  • Comment number 4.

I find it hilarious that he continuously (and annoyingly) calls his love interest 'shawty' when she's several inches taller than him in the video.

I also find this song hideously irritating. His voice is good but what happens when it goes through that awkward transition of breaking. He could lose it when it deepens.

I also find the video hideously cringeworthy. I hate the way he tries to act like this big hearthrob and he comes across as this six year old child. I actually watch the video for comedic purposes too cos it's just like a parody.

And it's worrying that Usher looks so excited and pats Bieber on the back when he brings a load of teenage girls home.

  • Comment number 5.

Mock the Week style: "One Time" - Is it the number of times less than one that Justin Bieber has done it?

(note to mods: "it" being write a decent and catchy pop song, of course.)

  • Comment number 6.

What's Usher doing hanging around with 15 year olds? I used to think he was cool.

12 year olds shouldn't make music! It just won't be good!

  • Comment number 7.

I find the way that young lady is sitting highly disturbing... But maybe she's certain this is the way to the young man's pocket money.

I'm almost (but not quite) ashamed to say that I like this. I am *fully* ashamed to say that I (even more) enjoy his Cardigans rip-off, "Love Me", tho...

  • Comment number 8.

ohmygod, i love justin bieber SO much. he's so amazing at everything. i think every other comment on here is stupid, there all saying he's rubbish.. have you heard him? you think he cant sing? idiots. he's amazing in my opinion. (:

  • Comment number 9.

  • Comment number 11.

Are you for real? Im gonna save that comment incase it gets removed. It's epic.

  • Comment number 12.

Liam, what did she say? OK, dumb question - give us the gist, if you can. Use code or something.

  • Comment number 13.

Im gonna edit it and post it in chunks. Im sure most will slip through.

  • Comment number 14.

pepo sud think be4 u even speack u pepo hate him becoz he is like one of the hottest guy in the world (just becoz he is hotter then u pepo)

  • Comment number 18.

Lolz u pepo r such lmrz

I wonder how old lucinda lou is that she wants to make it quite clear that justin is 15 not 12 or 11 or 10...

  • Comment number 19.

in fact, (and i know this will be pulled), maybe lucinda lou is just yet another pseudonym for Jonathan King.

  • Comment number 20.

I think that SHOULD be pulled. For being about 15 years out of date.

  • Comment number 21.

You're right Curtain... lol... 15 years though... do you think he could be his SON???!

  • Comment number 22.

Not sure what in the last chunk was removed.

i meen i have went out with a boy tht is shorter than me but ay lest he was cute and hot and nice ..... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!at lest he is brought up well

Think I removed the offensive part.

  • Comment number 23.

It's a hilarious comment anyway. Lucinda, if you can read this, our objection to Justin is not in any way connected to his height. Or how well you brought him up. It's more to do with how listening to him makes us want to bring things up.

  • Comment number 24.

I don't even think it's catchy anymore! It used to be in my head for ages but I think I've built up some kind of immunity towards it.

  • Comment number 25.

ohmygod, i love justin bieber SO much. he's so amazing at everything. i think every other comment on here is stupid, there all saying he's rubbish.. have you heard him? you think he cant sing? idiots. he's amazing in my opinion. (:

that is even better than my claim that Fight For This Love had 'intelligent lyrics', congratulations. a real classic.

  • Comment number 28.

Hey, if we don't like the song then we're not just going to say 'well, at least he tried' or 'at least the teenaged girls love him' are we?

Also if someone acts like a hysteric fan and uses the abbreviation 'pepo' people aren't just going to say 'at least she's passionate about something' are they?

Nevertheless I respect your views even though I don't agree with them.

P.S - found it amusing that you were so angry you did your post twice, not even sure if you can do that without writing it out again.

  • Comment number 29.

    CORRECTION - *teenage* not teenaged

  • Comment number 30.

Oh come on lucinda, you were rude first!

  • Comment number 31.

Lucinda, please try to understand the following:
    a) people don't always like what you like and they can say so here.
    b) we only copied your comment because it was deleted by moderators
    c) using abbreviations here is not a good idea - posters here tend to be extremely intelligent and articulate and do not argue using words like "pepo". This is not a text messaging service. The occasional full stop wouldn't hurt either.
    d) we are not attacking you personally. I repeat, we are not attacking you personally. We are attacking your comment and your opinion. It is not personal. We say awful things to each other all the time, but not about each other personally, just about the opinions we have. This is called "banter".
    e) Get over it, basically. Most people here do not think this song is very good. If you can supply a reasoned argument why you think it is very good, then fine, we will respect your opinion whilst arguing with it.

  • Comment number 32.

Now wait just a minute... I've Lucinda's argument somewhere else recently... VERY recently in fact. Spirit, are you masquerading as a teenage Justin Bieber fan?

Anyway, Lucinda - don't take it personally. We're just having a little bit of fun with you, and no harm meant. The rest of us are probably a bit older than you, and don't like this stuff much. But Justin's music isn't aimed at us, it's aimed at you, and if you like it, that's cool. When we were younger, older music fans probably laughed at the stuff we listened to as well.

Now, if you're still listening to Justin Bieber when you 18, then we're going to have words...

  • Comment number 33.

if u r saying tht u r goin along with my opinion then y r u giving me all these nasty comments back ???????

  • Comment number 34.

    Hi Liam and Curtains !

After the long chat we had on Rybak , I was just wondering how the welcoming of new "posters " is going ?

    *Looks up and reads *

    Oh dear !

Lucinda Lou , please excuse my friends . :)

It is great to have you on these pages , and wonderful to see you being so passionate about the gorgeous Justin.

Do share with us , what you especially like about his song, and what other music you like ?

As long as you explain yourself clearly and from your own viewpoint , and are cool to everyone else , I am sure everyone will do their best to be cool with you.

  • Comment number 35.

I believe I just WAS cool with her.

Lucinda, we're not saying that we go along with your opinion. Most of us on here don't. What we're saying is that we're taking the mickey out of you, but there's no malice in it. As Thranjax said, we do it to each other all the time.

Tell you what, I'll share something with you that you can take the mickey out of me for. One of my favourite songs of all time is "Walking In The Air" by Aled Jones. It's the song from The Snowman. Look it up on YouTube if you don't know it. You'll probably be disgusted.

Also, don't be creeped out by Spirit's kindly old uncle routine. It's just the way he is.

  • Comment number 36.

    "Hi Liam and Curtains"

You see Lucinda, Spirit completely ignored me there, but I'm not upset :(

    Banter!

  • Comment number 37.

Spirit, both Curtains and I have basically said that if Lucinda likes the song, she should explain why, in more terms than "because he is hot".

To be fair to Justin of course, he has recorded and released a single in his bedroom at age 15. The only thing that I released in my bedroom at age 15 was...

anyway, he may well mature into a great songwriter, who knows.

  • Comment number 38.

    Or the next Jojo.

  • Comment number 39.

At 35 , so Curtains loves " Walking in the AIR " by Aled Jones.

He is admired by Liam , and Curtains is sometimes known as The First Lady Of Chartblog.

*Puts pices of jigsaw together *

    Ah ......

  • Comment number 40.

"One of my favourite songs of all time is "Walking In The Air" by Aled Jones. It's the song from The Snowman".

Am I being horribly pedantic to point out that Walking in the Air is sung by Peter Auty in the film?

  • Comment number 41.

It is a superb magical song ,

  • Comment number 42.

    At 36...

Thranjax , you know when you get to that stage in a relationship , when you think someone is brilliant , yet you don't feel the need to tell them they are brilliant every day .

    Well , that's us .

And while , I'm about it , I feel the same way about loads of people on here too.

    There !

    I said it.

    And YES !

    I do mean YOU !

  • Comment number 43.

Jaxster, you'll note that I said the song from The Snowman, not the recording from The Snowman. The single that was released, that is in my top 100, was Aled Jones.

So you're not being horribly pedantic. You're actually paying too LITTLE attention to the details.

  • Comment number 44.

    Oh Curtains , you're good !

    Over to you Jax......

  • Comment number 45.

Well that struck a nerve didn't it! Don't diss the Jones!

Truly though, if I said "I really love Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, it's the song from Shrek", are you telling me you wouldn't leap in and say "actually it was John Cale in the film". (And rufus on the soundtrack)?

  • Comment number 46.

Rufus' version is actually my fav of that song! Just for the record.

Spirit, I will not be welcoming to people who post such rubbish, ever.

  • Comment number 47.

    Well thats me told !

  • Comment number 48.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

  • Comment number 49.

Lets test a theory. "Complain about this comment".

  • Comment number 50.

I see the sense of humour bypass operation was a complete success . :)

  • Comment number 51.

Haha my sense of humour is as amazing as ever. This was my come back :p

  • Comment number 52.

Unlucky, Play.com's selling Bieber's album for £2.99 (mp3) and it's still not in the top 10! And Empire of the Sun (also £2.99) is beating it. Win!

  • Comment number 53.

I often have problems telling the difference between Justin Bieber and the gay one off of Glee.

  • Comment number 54.

And judging by your name , it may be a mistake you dont want to make in a darkened room . :)

  • Comment number 55.

Sorry, did my last comment sound snippy? It wasn't supposed to. There was a tongue-in-cheek "so there" implied. Don't worry, I'm not going to get all my mates from the Aled Jones fan forum to come on here and call you names!

But since you asked the question: Walking In The Air is first and foremost the song from The Snowman. That's why it's famous, and although there are two versions by different singers, they're both linked in everyone's mind to the cartoon (as the Aled Jones version sounds sufficiently similar to the one in the cartoon). So even though the Aled Jones version which is a personal favourite wasn't on the soundtrack, it's still very much "the song from The Snowman".

I think we both know that Hallelujah is NOT first and foremost "the song from Shrek". I don't think if you've heard the Shrek version, you've necessarily heard them all (of which there are apparently many, and the Buckley version seems to be the definitive one).

Frankly, I'd rather listen to every recording mentioned in this comment at the same time than that Justin Bieber one.

  • Comment number 56.

yes curtains, I know Hallelujah in Shrek isn't an exactly identical scenario, I just couldn't think of another identical one. (i.e. a song which is famous, was written for a specific film or programme, but the charting version of which is performed by someone different than in the film.) maybe someone else can?

My guilty thing is Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel, but it has to be in the context of the film to get the eyegushers working!

  • Comment number 57.

Funnily enough, I saw Watership Down for the first time about a week ago. My girlfriend loves it, and was almost instantly tearing up. Now I'll be the first to concede that I can be easily choked up by works of fiction at times (embarrassingly so for a dude), but there was nothing doing here.

Maybe it was the voice of Richard Briers coming out of an animated rabbit that killed it for me. He was just annoying.

  • Comment number 58.

HANDBAGS AND GLADRAGS that STEREOPHONICS song from THE OFFICE . :)

  • Comment number 59.

UNCHAINED MELODY that ROBSON AND JEROME song that was used in the film GHOST . lol

  • Comment number 60.

    Two decent examples there, Spirit.

Borrowing some of Thranjax's self-confessed pedantry, I must highlight a subtle but important difference between "Walking In The Air, that Aled Jones song that was in The Snowman" and "Walking In the Air, by Aled Jones. It's the song from The Snowman." The former explicitly states that what was used in the cartoon had Aled Jones's involvement. The latter, which I said, allows for a distinction between the recording by Aled Jones, and the song itself. Even if it wasn't as clear as I could have made it.

Anyone bored of me talking about Walking In The Air yet?

  • Comment number 61.

I think this Aled Jones obssession is bordering on psychotic now ;)

Unless you are Aled Jones, and it's all gone wrong for you!

  • Comment number 62.

Haha lucinda lou. I wanna meet with you and yo pepo. Never have I laughed so hard on this blog.

  • Comment number 63.

Is "Yo Pepo" a cannibal fast food chain?

  • Comment number 64.

My guilty pleasure would be E.L.O's GREATEST HITS !!

    Brilliant !

  • Comment number 65.

I don't think of that as a guilty pleasure at all! ELO were brilliant.

  • Comment number 66.

    my guilty pleasure..hmm.

i do enjoy a good hakuna matata. but i also can't resist some old-school kylie..

  • Comment number 67.

Why stop at Hakuna Matata, why not listen to the whole Lion King soundtrack it's all great. Circle of Life, Be Prepared, Can You Feel The Love Tonight.

Best Musical EVER! Kicks Grease's butt

  • Comment number 68.

    mmmm.. Greased butts...

  • Comment number 69.

    A guilty pleasure THRANJAX ?

  • Comment number 70.

well, as a good catholic boy, everything is a guilty pleasure.

  • Comment number 71.

it was just last night that i had my lion king binge..i allocate myself to one a month otherwise i start talking like zazu.

grease came number 1 in that '100 Greatest Musicals' tv show. lion king didn't even make the top 20 :O

  • Comment number 72.

Oooh my guilty pleasure is Avril Lavigne. As an 18 year old man, I really should not like her music.

But I totally sing her stuff all the time!

  • Comment number 73.

Just by looking through my Itunes it seems I've got a lot of guilty pleasures. Stand and Deliver - Adam Ant, You Spin Me Right Round (Like A Record) - Dead or Alive, Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr.

Actually scrap them, I don't feel guilty about listening to them at all because they're all great songs (maybe not Ghostbusters but who doesn't love it!).

  • Comment number 74.

Randy , I think Avril Lavigne is a talented multi- instrumentalist who certainly knows how to write successful pop songs .

The fact my ex - girlfriend shared a passing resemblance to Avril just adds to the mix !!!

  • Comment number 75.

3 fantastic songs Harry , but Stand and Deliver was by Adam AND the Ants , and was their first number 1 single , staying there for 5 weeks.

Sorry for being pedantic , but Stuart Goddard IS a friend of mine.....

  • Comment number 76.

Randy , I can't believe you are only 18 , you write with such depth and maturity at times .

    I am pleasantly surprised .
Keep going buddy , and keep up the love for music.

  • Comment number 77.

Yeah, Stand and Deliver was by Adam and the Ants but he was later know as Adam Ant so I thought it would be easier to just shorten his name... obviously I was wrong.

  • Comment number 78.

NO!!!!!!!!!!! My faith in Ghostbusters has been put in jeapordy as I've found two songs, in the space of about five minutes, that sound like it.
    M - Pop Muzik from 1979
    and
I Want A New Drug - Huey Lewis and The News from 1984 before Ghostbusters

  • Comment number 79.

    I know what you mean . :)

I am just a stickler when it comes to chart facts , but as you have mentioned ADAM AND THE ANTS , here are my 10 favourite Ants songs .

    1) STAND AND DELIVER

    2)ANTMUSIC

    3)DOG EAT DOG

    4)THE SCORPIONS

    5)JOLLY ROGER

    6)FEED ME TO THE LIONS

    7)YOUNG PARISIANS

    8)KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER

    9)ANTS INVASION

    10)MOWHAWK.

  • Comment number 80.

    M - POP MUZIK = Fantastic pop song !!!! Got to number 2 , and M WERE 1 HIT WONDERS !

  • Comment number 81.

We're not still going on about one hit wonders are we? I seem to recall that I didn't do too well on the subject last time.

  • Comment number 82.

I know I listed ELO's Greatest Hits as my guilty pleasure and THranjax came on and said they were brilliant.....

Doesn't this just tell us all , that really there are NO guilty pleasures , and we should all be allowed to like whatever we like , without being ticked off by the THOUGHT POLICE !

JUST WHO ARE THE PEOPLE THAT WILL TELL ME WHAT I AM ALLOWED TO LIKE ?

The only person who dictates what I like is...me !

And if I think the Greatest Hits BY the Carpenters is MAGICAL and I think that Karen Carpenter has one of the purest , most beautiful , voices I have ever heard , no one will ever change my mind on this.

And there is no one that will ever convince me that Superstar , Goodbye to love , Rainy days and Mondays or We've only just begun , are not great pop songs , because THEY ARE .

There ! It needed to be said !

  • Comment number 83.

Right... now who is gonna come out of the closet and admit to likin STEPS ?

    Come on we won't judge you . . . . .

  • Comment number 84.

See I never got into Steps and I kind of feel guilty for never liking them, even though it's usually the other way round. Now S Club 7 that's a good pop band.

  • Comment number 85.

I have got to admit to having slight crushes on Hannah Spearitt and Tina Barrett , I never go for the obvious like Rachel Stevens .

Jo O Meara infamously pressed the self-destruct button on her pop career on Celebrity Big Brother .

S Club 7 , also had some catchy pop songs in their club.

  • Comment number 86.

No, I didn't like Steps Spirit! Obviously they were nice to look at, but the ears didn't prick up in any way whatsoever.

The Carpenters - great songs, again, not a guilty pleasure at all really.

I think a guilty pleasure has to be one you would really not want anyone to know about, like Crazy Frog or Eoghan Quigg. One that suggests some form of insanity.

  • Comment number 87.

If M only got to number two, how are they a one hit wonder, being pedantic again? They have to get to number one. Anyway he had another top forty hit.

  • Comment number 88.

wow some people take this a bit too seriously which makes me think maybe they have something against the artist, i mean who would be that angry about a song, justin bieber DOES have a good voice but in this song they have played around with his voice too much. why would USHER AND JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE want to sign him to their label he is NOT a one hit wonder and defiantly not disney star he is FAR from that just because hes young you automatically think o o hes younger than me and girls like him so hes gay god why don't you go write your own song and make an album. honestly people hes 15 CALM DOWN.

  • Comment number 89.

This i feel is a really good song, yeah hate me if you disagree but it's my opinion i even pre-ordered justin's album off itunes, i love it the other songs are a bit cheesy but this is deffo the best song off the album.

  • Comment number 90.

Personally I have no problem with Justin as a person my problem is that I don't think the song is any good. What makes it worse is the fact that he's 15, no-ones ever going to be a great artist at the age 15 and it's just unfair on him, if he was given a few more years until he was, let's say, 20 then he could be a good songwriter but at the moment I think he is just going to fade away quickly into obscurity. I'm not going to hate anyone for disagreeing with me on a subject as trivial as music

p.s: I don't think at any point anyone said he was gay.

  • Comment number 91.

"I'm not going to hate anyone for disagreeing with me on a subject as trivial as music. "

Now Harry , I agree with the not hating people thing , but are you calling music trivial ?

Surely not ! Reading your posts , you appear to love music with a passion.

Please tell me you don't think music is trivial , and it was a slip of the mouse !

  • Comment number 92.

Harry was saying music taste's a trivial reason to HATE someone, Spirit. And he is correct.

  • Comment number 93.

Yeah, Curtain said what I was going to say but in a much more concise way.

  • Comment number 94.

Thank goodness for that . It was one of those lines that could be read in different ways , and did not tie up with what appeared to be a love for music .

So happy , I have you figured right.

  • Comment number 95.

And of course Curtains is always concise .

At least , that is what his girlfriend says...

    :)

  • Comment number 96.

    Haha zing.

  • Comment number 97.

Ouch, but funny. Is this because I was mean about your friend with the Paloma Faith shrine in her bedroom? ;o)

Paloma Faith shrine in the bedroom.. that is perhaps a little creepy. Understandable on a level, she is beautiful. But hmm. Shrine..

And what I really want to know is how Curtains knows that Reviews has a Paloma Faith shrine in the bedroom ?

He could have said a shrine in the lounge , but he is absolutely sure it's in the bedroom !

How can he be so precise ?
