Sidney Samson

ALERT! ALERT! New ground is being broken in the 'Songs About Rivers' genre! People should be told! I'm telling people! You tell people!

Until this momentous day dawned, songs about rivers have tended to fall neatly into the following categories: Songs about a jolly day spent gallivanting in a punt with your spiffing chums; songs about the mighty power of nature washing stuff away while a songwriter - sorry, poet - stands on the shore, moved to tears; songs about the pagan mystery of nature, with specific reference to misty riverbanks; and songs about seeing trouble, up ahead (ask your dad when Top Gear finishes).

This is none of these things. And yet somehow, it is ALL of these things.

()

The jolly day is covered in the song's title and general sense of fun. What could be more splendid than an invite from one's chums to perambulate river-wards at a rate of knots? Let's go indeed! I'll bring the Pimms! Cor! It's parky out here and no mistake!

The mighty power of nature is apparent to anyone who has had the fortune of attempting to listen to this on an elderly pair of headphones. Things begin to flap. The lower frequencies create a tiny tornado of pulsating sound on each side of your head, and you can only stand in awed silence while it blows itself out...or turn the volume down.

As for pagan mystery, well, any musical call to arms like this bears comparison with (assumed) pagan rituals from the past, surely? It's highly repetitive music which rises and falls in intensity, to create a sense of wild abandon in a congregation of like-minded people. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense outside of that environment, and there's a fella shouting instructions over the top. No misty riverbanks though, that's an oversight.

As for seeing trouble up ahead...well you've read ChartBlog comments before, right? Have at it, webulons!

'We must do subtraction of your clothes' has to be one of the funniest lyrics of the year so far. Decent song though.

  • Comment number 2.

" We must do subtraction of your clothes ! "

Make you mind up Harry , last night you said to me :

" We don't have to take our clothes off , to have a good time ! "

Now whats it to be ?

    Clothes on or off ?

    I'm a busy man ! :)

It was my birthday yesterday , and I was out with a very large group in a very hot and sticky nightclub .

Riverside is an absolute dancefloor crowd pleaser .
You should have seen the shapes people were pulling when this track came on . Great to dance to , rhythmically stimulating and many clubbers seem to like the version with the expletive.

This is a dance track , and this is what it makes a lot of people do !

Big fish , little fish , cardboard box .

No funky chickens by this river !

  • Comment number 4.

Okay, my simple mind is confused now.

  • Comment number 5.

Sorry just having fun with "clothes " lyrics in songs .

As in the famous top ten hit " We don't have to take our clothes off (to have a good time ) " by Jermaine Stewart .

The joke is lost now , I've explained it , but look on the bright side at least we are not discussing Dr Who , like you lot were last night , and confusing my poor little brain .

  • Comment number 6.

Wizard Sleeve though, I mean? Snigger.

  • Comment number 7.

Another thing , this song is good for , (apart from learning expletives !) , is that it's great to run to .

I am in training for the Bath Half Marathon in March , and this is my most played track on my I-POD , from the last week .

Almost fell over twice on the ice though , and nearly yelled the swear word on the adult version !

  • Comment number 8.

Wow, an annoying novelty tune I actually like!

  • Comment number 9.

    Happy Birthday, Spirit!

I love this track. It's great on a night out and so easy to dance to - and shout to. Infact it's probably the only time on a night out when it's acceptable to shout swear words at your friends and or strangers. Particularly that one.

I've got to say though, I can't stand this song being played during the day time. On Radio One or any station - It's should strictly be a night time song.

    Also,

    Wizard Sleeve = Ha!

  • Comment number 10.

Yeah I like this. Prefere the Chuckie track though. I lump them together as they were both out at roughly the same time.

    Happy belated birthday Spirit.

Whens the Bath half marathon? I'm starting training for Sheffield's half this year. I did it last year but I want to do it in under 2 hours this year.

  • Comment number 11.

The BATH half is , I think , on March 15th , so I am in training now.

Like you Liam , I am determinned to get under 2 hours.

When is the Sheffield one ?

  • Comment number 12.

OH and I reckon Riverside will be top 20 at least next Sunday !

    Choon !

  • Comment number 13.

April some time assumuning its the same as last year.

I was just determined to finish, and that I did. Despite the throwing up etc... Wasnt a horific time lol.

I will be in a lot better shape this year! I started on Feb 1st last year and stuggled to do two miles. I can run 6 comfortably now, so this year it should be a breeze.

    Incoming injury garunteed!

  • Comment number 14.

I think that this song is going to be a very BIG hit single !

    It is currently everywhere !

    Top ten perhaps ?

  • Comment number 15.

Number four to be precise. Riverside... I wonder what other moist delights might be found up the wizards sleeve?

  • Comment number 16.

NUMBER 4 ? This is going to NUMBER 1 !

  • Comment number 17.

Equating Wizard Sleeve with "going to number one" opens up (fnar) too many openings (fnar) for double entendres that I cannot countenance it.

  • Comment number 18.

Riverside NUMBER 2 , oh Spirit , one place out , still least I was closer than the mighty Thranjax !

  • Comment number 19.

Love this a lot, in a silly bad go out and dance with your friends kind of way. This got (badly, we were in a dump) mixed into Chuckie's 'Miami Girl' thing on Friday. We went mental.

  • Comment number 20.

Yeah , I can picture you now Liam , in your LBD , with killer heels , dancing around your handbag .

    Hot ! Hot ! Hot !

  • Comment number 21.

Riverside sold 97,000 copies last week to debut at number 2.
    Iyaz sold 106,000.

The expletive in the naughty version is uttered by Tupak Shukar , a sample from the movie JUICE .
