SO SHE SAID TO HIM, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE ?" AND HE SAID, "I'M LOOKING FOR A WIFE," AND SHE SAID, "WILL I DO ?".... SOMETIMES IT'S A S SIMPLE AS THAT.

Chris Evans | 08:54 UK time, Friday, 18 August 2006

Well good mighty me, how are you all today ?

Last night I went out for dinner with the fox and her hubby, a fine man by the name of Frederico. We had a wonderful time.

We went to my favorite restau' (as the French say), the faire is of a good standard but the most important thing is, that they look after you, really really well.

Nigel, our food and drinks man from the show, joined us, along with two other friends of mine.

It was one of those nights where the company was of such quality and so easy that you didn't have to worry about anyone having a good time. We were all foodies and we all knew how to hold up our own end of a decent conversation. Four of the six of us had never even met before but it was always going to be swell.

It turned out to be so swell that after the meal was over, desserts grappa and all, we went to a pub for a "last orders" pint of guiness. Bliss.

One more pint on and approaching midnight and everyone seemed to agree that it might be a good idea to go home.

It was at this point that Rebecca remarked upon the fact that I hadn't stopped smiling all night. She was right, I could feel it in my cheeks, she said I was "de-mob happy" because I was coming into two weeks off. Actually she was wrong, I was just happy anyway but her comment struck a dormant chord.

The rest of the gang took to organising their carriages home but with the "de-mob" thought fresh in my mind, I decided to go onwards not homewards !

Having secured the company of a wing man, I headed off deep into the night, toward the heart of my beloved Soho.
I used to tear it up all the time in Soho but nowadays I hardly ever go out which makes it all the more enjoyable and naughty.

From jumping in the cab to getting home, I think I had no more than three drinks but my goodness me I just can't do it anymore. I no longer get hangovers, it's more likel I've been poisoned. I feel wretched and ill.

I'm sat here now, late for my blog, having missed golf, with a head like a ton weight but am I happy ? Well yes I am.

I did nothing wrong, at least not to my knowledge. I woke up alone, always a result, and it appears, I undressed myself and even brushed my teeth !

My pal is asleep on the sofa with a smile on his face. I shall awake him and then...

Our mission ? To go for a massive walk over Hampstead Heath, it's the best view of the city one could ever wish for, we'll go to the cafe, have the £4.95 spag bol., back home around lunch time, a quick look at the Telegraph crossie, check out the cricket and then off to work to hear what you're all up to at the weekend.

Maybe I am de-mob happy after all.

What a life, what a laugh.

Lots of love and loads of potatoes, x.

    Morning all

Last day of my training course in the smoke. Home to the loved ones in the countryside this evening & am I ever looking forward to it! Last night I was kept awake by the woman in the next room who's partner was apparently making her very happy, but I'm not going to complain about someone being happy! Everyone should be happy! AS Chris said "What a life, what a laugh"

As was said the other day, being happy is a mind set. It's good being happy, and once you're in that mind set then you look at the positives all around and it's hard to remember why you were ever sad. I'm even looking forward to the long drive home because I know Chris and the gang will be there to keep me company.

    Thanks again.

It sounds like a fab night out and I'm so jealous. there is nothing better than a good meal, in good company and then moving on to a favoured, trusted place for the rest of night. I spent the evening in the company of a mortgage advisor and worrying about buying a new house.

Looking forward to your show tonight - summery tunes please so that the weather might get the hint.

He's 65...it reminded me of my time in hospital, being around an elderley guy who only wore a trenchcoat and nothing else...maybe it's an elderly thing to wear very little?

I woke up at 6am this morning and thought of an idea for a future t.v programme if you ever wanted to use it...What part is the body is the smellest? You could parade 5 bodyparts in-front of 5 blind-folded people and get them to detect which is which only by smell? It came to me after needing a pee this morning and a nosebleed - not a nice thought but it happened therefore it goes on in life.

So your drinks night out was last night, mine is tonight? Thursday night used to be the Friday 10 years ago but now it's probably Thursday, Friday and Saturday as people try and de-stress!

I think you should ask punters to come up with a title for your blog e.g. "Top of the Blogs" or "On the Blog" or "Blog & Roll"?

    Hi Christophe,

Firstly I just want to send a virtual cool flannel to your hungover head. It sounded a really lovely evening - Nigel is fascinating.

As virgin blog contributor I wanted to add my congrats for the show. It's got better and better (I do still smile at your first day in JW's seat - it didn't go terribly well did it?!!) I listen most days as my 4 and nearly 2 yr old son and daughter make our noisy way through teatime, bath and bed. So naturally I don't get to hear all of it! However, it has become a little 'hill' for me - I am now 8m pregnant with number 3 and when the 5-7pm shift with Charlie and Imogen has gotten too much, I lie on the bed as they bounce, collide and mess about. It's still noisy, but we're all having fun and I'm comfy and I just about still manage to get to listen to the show! So there you are...

I also wanted to add how amazing yesterdays blog is. With the imminent arrival of offspring no. 3 I often wonder how I'll cope. The children themselves can occasionally be one of my hills, but quite often not! So will endeavour to keep it all in perspective as and when it's needed - because our life is amazing and we are so blessed. Thanks for the inspiration!

Have a great day and a super couple of weeks off. You'll be much missed!

Wow - first to comment today. What do I say? The only thought that occured to me reading this post was how right you are when you describe what a hangover feels like when you get out of the way of enjoying a good drink on a regular basis, and of course, as we get older! In fact, it's probably the latter that's the issue rather than the lack of practice.

On a wider note, I'd just like to say how much I'm enjoying both show and blog.

    Have great holiday.

glad to hear of your very sociable evening with suitably sociable friends. Hate to say it Christophe, but 40 is a funny age with alcohol. He soon learned what was to blame; he is now pushing 70 and has never got back to his pre-40 drinking days.

My last entry said that you inspire me but I have to say that I am not inspired to drink until I feel poisoned. I have been on a slippery slope to sobriety since I entered my thirties. The meal and company that you had last night sound amazing and I am dreadfully jealous as I sat in last night while hubbie was at work and ate baked beans on toast. Don't sit too close to me today!
I liked the show yesterday and I thought that I would tell you how my mum and dad met (sorry but I can't text in as I am always driving when your show is on!). My dad was working as a hospital porter with a mate during the summer holidays from university and my mum was a nurse at said hospital. My mum had a red headed friend and it looked like a double-date was on the cards. The only problem being who would go out with whom? My dad fancied the redhead but picked my mum's name from the hat. Hey presto! 16 years of marriage and 2 daughters followed before the divorce. Who knows if my dad had picked the redhead's name I could have been a redhead rather than a brunette!
Having a BBQ tomorrow with some friends and their children. Never mind the weather it is the company that counts!

A couple of days ago a colleague re-introduced me to grappa. Having only had a brief exposure some years ago in Venice, I'd decided it was gruesome stuff and I'd never touch it again.

What a difference a good Grappa can make! It was fab.

    Hello Chris,
I get such a warm glow reading your blog and comments. It's nice to know that we are all singing from the same hymn book.

I had a good old imprmptu social last night as four friends descended upon me. Luckily I always keep a well stocked wine rack. I forced myself :) to drink a whole bottle of red. I'm favouring a Beaujolais at the mo. I always prefer the French stuff in the summer and it's one of a few red wines that can be drunk chilled. I managed to escape the dreaded hangover as I always drink a pint of water with a Berocca (vit C) tablet in it before bedtime. Not sure it would win the battle against Grappa though!

I cobbled meal together from the very limited foodstuffs available in my kitchen including the remains of last weeks organic veg box. I love to feed people and am surprisingly creative when I have to pull something out of the bag. With the support of friends Joe and Joe (who played some quality music on acoustic guitars and kept my glass topped up) I battled in the kitchen and really did myself proud. I dished up vanilla ice cream with figs, banana and honey for dessert but it went down a treat!

We went on into the small hours.......we ladies requesting songs from the very talented guitar playing men which we shamelessly murdered with our drunken wailing and messy dancing. It was a fantastic night. I love that impromptu stuff....

I too am in 'de-mob' mode as I have the next two weeks off of work. What a feeling! I'll spend the next week camping in Dorset with 6 mates and 8 children. The following week a friend and I will be walking an ickle bit of the the South-West Path (a 630 mile coastal walk from Poole to Minehead). We shall start at Poole and see how far we get and camp or B&B each night. 50 miles will be our max. It's just for pleasure. We may go back next year for the next leg. I just can't wait to take in that amazing rugged coastal scenery and then get some of that west country cider down my neck. I'd walk all day just for that.

I wish you and your pals lots of happy holiday fun and and look forward to hearing your report and musings upon my return.

    Morning Chris,

    Mmmmmmmwah! ( a little nibble....and a teasing lip-tug on your left earlobe ) .....

There's very little can beat a good night out in London with friends, I can remember my last night out there, with such clarity ... we had a fab time..... September last year ( gosh is it really that long ago) , a gig at the Old Drill Hall, followed by diner with friends- somewhere nearby. London is such a warm friendly place at night - the pubs seem to spill out, making lounge bars of the streets. Unlike yourself Chris , I have, no clue, where I am when I'm out and about in London ( except when I'm stood in-front of the places you see in postcards of course) - I rely totally, on my friends to put me on the right tube/train or what ever it is I need, to get to the where I need to be ( I do know of a fantastic Italian restaurant though near St Paul's .. it's really tiny and underground. What's it called? No idea.. but I'll know it when I see it..If I don't exit from the right tube station stairwell though, it takes me ages to find it. ..... I have lunch there when-ever I visit London............. They remember me by my first name too, even though it's very often months between visits......How cool is that! I always ask for a side order of chips... they don't do chips! ........ I always get a side order of chips.......;)

A night out in London, is a three-day-event for me... Day one: travel to Chorleywood by car- to stay with Jenny (a really good friend), the rest of that day, just chill ( Cinema at Hemel: takeaway and girl-talk in the evening). Day two .. up early ... get ready, get the first "cheap" (one day travel card) tube into town about 9:30 ... shop, for things I don't need and will never wear ...... Camden is a good place and of course Oxford Street...... then lunch ..restaurant near St Paul's.... then more shopping .. then back to Chorleywood .. bath .. glad rags on...... back into town .. by car .. park somewhere-free......walk......... talk...... restaurant ....... pub-always.... club-sometimes ........ walk ... talk... get lost.... worry about not being able to find Jenny's car...... ... oh look there it is, right where we left it.........back to Chorleywood.... collapse into bed........ Day three (PM) .... Did I really dance with the waiter.....(.blush)... and you can delete those pictures right now Jenny! ..... Back into my car for the journey around the M25 and down the M3/M27/A31........... true what they say ... it's never far to a friends house......... no matter how far it is................

Shoes.....wasn't she fab lat night, the show physiologist I mean ......... hmmmmmmm: well; shall I go there? ....... Ok then.......... about 50 pairs of various shoes in my shoe cupboard, mainly strappy heels, no flats at all, other than trainers/plimsolls and 28 pairs of Boots , mainly Knee High ... ( I see em-I buy em) ..... some I've never worn in anger .......but I still love em...........

Have great holiday................ one more to help keep you warm while you're away...... hold onto something sturdy and brace yourself........

    Mmmmmmmmmmmwah!

    Keep smiling.

Firstly, a bit of a result when I popped into Asda and found 2 CD's for a tenner, so I bought a couple of old Queen albums (Jazz & A Night at the Opera) that I have on vinyl somewhere in the loft, but haven't listened to for years. Can't wait to rip them onto my iPod. In the meantime they're in the car for my mobile enjoyment.

Then we took our 8 year old daughter to have her first ever Indian meal at a cracking restaurant in Foulridge, Lancashire, called "The Massala Rooms" - very genuine Indian food cooked to perfection in very smart contemporary surroundings (no flock wallpaper here!). A couple of beers, a lovely Shiraz to accompany the meal, then home for a very peaceful sleep.

    Morning Fellow Christof Bloggers,
Looking forward to the show tonight.. I love All Request Friday, I'm going to try and call before I leave the office (on time).

Last night "how did your mum meet your dad". I loved that, espcially since its coming up on 20 years on 23rd August, since i met and fell in love with my other half. We celebrate that anniversary because it was so momentous. He met me on the Saturday night, and left his wife on the Monday morning, moved in with me, and we've been together ever since.

You've been around for a fair bit of it Chris - I remember hearing you on the radio when we moved into our flat in Glasgow 1988, and we both used to love listening to you in the morning. Now we tune in, from different cars, and compare smiles when we get home.

    Thanks Chris.

Then when we get to the destination, all I can think about is my business and how I can make it grow. It's a strange thing as I am a really laid back person for the rest of the time.

Zena, life without alcohol may be an interesting concept, but have you ever tried it? What's it like?

    Hi Chris and all Bloggers

Is it only me that loves going out for meals like the one Chris describes but feels if it wasn't for me organising it, it would never happen.

I'm then left wondering if the people I invite really want to be there. Do they not organise it because they would rather do other things? Do they think I do such a good job (how big is my head) that its best left to me? Are they too shy to ring round and ask everyone to go? Is their life so busy that unless someone asks there is no time in it for a meal?

Perhaps to overcome this tendency we should try to get one organised this weekend. Mine is tonight we are going to the only (I think) Turkish restaurant in the midlands. I'll let you know how it goes.

Have a great holiday Chris and let us know of your adventures if you can.

you're either one or t'other, there is no inbetween, although i have seen many arguments in a pub where one person is convinced they are one and everyone around them is convinced they are the other

there is of course no shame in being a pig, its all about facial features not whether you are indeed being described by the derogitary term " a pig" (although they get a raw deal, in my opinion, lovely creatures)

Anyway, I have just returned to the world of work having been made redundant from my last place (a great relief as I was wearing trainers and flip flops there!) and am now sporting my inner stiletto on the outside! In the past few weeks I have bought at least 10 pairs of shoes which probably doubles my collection. All the new ones are feminine and as expected kill my plates of meat! It does do wonders for the self confidence though and I feel like a new woman.

Disaster - I have broken the heel off a particularly nice pair of preppy black 3inch heels and am now back in trainers. The shoe retailer in question will be feeling my wrath on Monday when I take them back.

To the man who wants to buy a woman a pair of Jimmy Choos - I have always wanted a pair of Jimmy Choos. I am a size 7/8 and if the shoe fits, I'll wear it.

    Hey Chris

earlier this year i was having a really hard time, more often that not I would cry as i was driving home from work, indulge myself in this cathartic experience before I got to my house and did the usual evening thing.

your show has quite oddly changed my days! of course I look forward to home time, but now almost with excitement; i enjoy the journey home immensely. your seemingly effortless chat and brilliant tunes, the fox and the sports locker are far more enjoyable than salty tears and a snotty nose.

this week has been one of those rubbish ones, many things going wrong, things that no-one can change. but i have chosen to be happy, find my hill and smile.

this weekend, rain or shine i shall be sat on a beach watching the sea, it is always intriguing, ever changing and never bores.

have a good two weeks off, i will miss the show, but then that means it will be appreciated more when you get back

It was his way of telling me some things I just can't control and to find my hill and let it wash over me unless I could do something about it.... in which cas the message was to get on with it and sort it, either way lifes to short not to take out time to be happy

    Hi Debs , (#73)

There’s shed loads of camp sites between Poole and Weymouth, with everything from fixed caravan park type places, to tent in a field places… If you have children with you go for one of the Holiday Parks that has a campsite attached … the very best one is called Waterside (I’m not sure if they have a campsite attached though but it is the best Holiday Park...) it’s spitting distance from the coastal path, yet it has everything you might need to keep the children happy if there are any grumpy clouds about. Osmington Mills is another good one and Warmwell is ok but much further in-land so you’d need to drive to the coastal path. The campsite that the Top Gear team tried to burn down recently is at Crossways but again it’s a little way from the coast. Not too sure about B & Bs though .. all pretty much the same around here ( never stayed in one near here myself)

If you’re taking children on the coastal path between Poole and Weymouth, watch out for the nudist beaches around the Studland area(marked with flags- best to walk around that bit and avoid it completely) and if the children are real tiddlers then keep em on a short lead on the high parts cos … you can run out of ground pretty quickly on the cliff tops… very often… long grass overhangs the cliffs and there ain’t anything underneath it….. stay safe …. Have fun and,……..

    Keep smiling

I know that feeling about not been able to drink like I used to! I'm only 26 but it seems like what I used to drink in my late teens/early twenties would be a recipe for me to be ill for at least a couple of days!! Things definitely change when you fall in love.

Gone are the days of nights out round town on a Friday and Saturday which more often than not finished up with a kebab stood in the taxi queue after been in some dingy night club! The mortgage and my forthcoming marriage have assigned those memories to my past.

Nowadays it tends to be a couple of beers at home with a lovely cooked meal prepared by the both of us followed by a DVD on a Saturday night. It certainly feels alot different when you get up at a reasonable hour on a Sunday morning and it becomes a more productive day!

Perhaps I'm getting old before my time?! Does anyone out there think the same way? Or do people think I'm incredibly sad?

Have a good holiday Chris. Look forward to your return.

To me, the simple fact is that we all now have a great place to generate smiley times (please forgive the dodgy 80's phrase, but it fits for now) amongst ourselves. Sure, Chris won't be giving us a daily dose of inspiration, but so much incredible stuff has already been generated on this blog that I hope we just keep posting and posting and posting and giving each other that good, happy feeling every day for the next couple of weeks.

My hope is that we hit at least 2,000 postings just on 19th August's blog alone (being that it is the last one until Croque Monsieur Mange Tout returns from his 'olidiz).

To my mind, that would do a couple of things:-

    1) Keep us flowing in the manner we've got used to in only 10 blogs (can you believe that's all it's been so far?!)

    2) Blow Cogmeister's mind when he returns as to what he's actually started....

So please, guys, if you see this and want to keep it up, give more...tell all.....the floor is ours for two weeks...let's see what happens....

Great idea re: keeping the blog going. A habit can be formed or extinguished after only 18 repetative trials. However a habit can be extinguished much faster when not reinforced. Therefore, if we cease blogging for two weeks, it is very likely that when it does start up again it will not be at the same fervor and energy. Many of us would find other preoccupations and things to fill our time. (Sorry, I am a psychologist so I see the world in terms of reinforcing and extinguishing behaviors.)

My 'bestie' and I have had a shocking year, but have remained solidly there for each other. At times 'wing man', at others big sister or even Father Confessor, I know I can rely upon her to say it like it is and motivate me. Be proud - your sad friend is leaning upon you - it means you are a good friend.

Enoy more nights out with friends and celebrate the happiness that good friendships bring.

OK so to honour my dearly missed uncle Brian, I thought it would be fitting to go to mass last night at St. Stephen's cathedral here in Brisbane! All very tongue in cheek in the style which he would have loved of course - I've not turned to the church side since being away! But it was rather odd a droning Queensland voice preaching to the boardshort wearing tanned masses. Even funnier he told of the gift of alcohol, and the sad fact that some abuse this gift. We'd just had four jugs of beer, so I had to laugh and conceal my alcohol based existance. I think even funnier was the fact that I had the German trio with me.. I can hear him laughing now.. A very special experience, one certainly heightened by the beer. Obviously then we had some more and watched Gaelic football. has anyone seen that game? It's a totally odd looking mix of rugby, football and a bit of basketball.. And it has some very fanatical fans. GO COUNTY MAYO!

    Morning all,

Despite the fact I loathe my boss and only have four days left working for him, I was glad to get into work today (and yes, I obviously am mad!).

Y'see I've had a very long two days packing up the house before it all goes into storage this Friday. Am moving from East Yorkshire to Suffolk for a new job starting in 4 weeks's time.

But the new house won't be ready until the end of October (hence the storage) and I go on a lovely 3 week holiday next week, so have had to do three-way packing this weekend:

Stuff for storage that I can cope without until November...

Suits & stuff for when I'm lodging and start new job in September/October...

    And holiday stuff.

Thankfully Mum's come up to help me and she's been brilliant, but there's still all the stress of solicitors/mortgage lenders/change of address/planning/planning/planning to keep me plenty occupied.

I remember when I accepted the job offer back in July, thinking "I wish it was all over now and I could wake up in the new house and get up and go to work in the new job." But sadly Life ain't ever that simple!

This'll be my 4th house in 8 years, so this new job had better be the 'one.' I'd be happy not to move again, ever!!

Hope the potatoes work well for everyone - sadly I can't join in this year for obvious reasons, but good luck. Heard a good tip on Gardeners' Question Time yesterday (2pm R4, every Sunday - sure beats Elaine Page and that awful laugh):

Now's the best time to cut any fresh herbs you've got in the garden and freeze them, 'cos they've got their fullest flavour at this time of year. I know Basil won't work as it can't tolerate cold temperatures, but if you've got any Rosemary, Parsley, Mint, Chives, Thyme or suchlike, then cut off the best bits, pop them in a sealed plastic bag and into the freezer ready for winter use. Might be handy to write what it is on the bag 'cos they can sometimes be hard to identify once frozen.

Right, s'pose I ought to knuckle down a bit, but Happy Monday to all!

    :-)

Its me again 'Audes down under' only blogged about 1 hour ago#182, feel addicted already. My 2nd blog.
Had my tea and was thinking of the next blog and thought i need to tell you all what happened last week.

Ben Elton was doing his last 2 shows of the tour in Perth(he lives here too). So i bought 2 tickets for me and hubby to go. Not checking the ticket i assumed we were going to the show before his last one.
So all excited (nothing too exciting happens in Perth)we headed off to see the show. I assumed the assistants checked our tickets as they showed us to our seats, it wasnt a full house. The announcer said 'Please welcome to Perth Australia.......LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO'.Everyone cheered and i said to my hubs, 'wow! their a good support band'?. They played for 1 hr and my husband was really bored of the music as they sang with no instruments, 1 song went on for 10 mins and we didnt know any of the tunes apart from one.
    .
We went for the interval . Thinking Mr Ben was on next ,we sat down, the curtains went up, there they were again.....'oh no' my husband cried 'whens ee coming on?'By this time i thought it might have been an australian thing where the main act would come on alittle later. So we sat there checking our watches every 5 mins waiting for Mr Elton.
At last they said their goodbyes and all the lights went on???!!!!!Not another interval? As we sat there everyone started to leave the hall. Oh my god, i quickly checked my ticket and realised we'd only gone on the wrong day ,he was playing the following week.Oh how we laughed.

Moto of the story.....Always check.......see the funny side of life......and be grateful to have seen a band i would never ever have paid to see.
Until the next time Audes out.xxx

ps we still had our other torn ticket to see Ben the following week and he was fab on the real date.

I was talking to the present Mr Ali at the weekend about our big plans to plant pots for Christmas and he (as usual) has come up with what could be a fatal flaw. How are we supposed to protect the tops of the plants from frost? Do we plant in bin bags and rear our crop in the sunniest spot indoors?
Any practical solutions would be gratefully received.

Of course that means the potatoes would have to be produced before the frost came, so hurry along now and fill up that dustbin!

Now I come to think of it, I THINK the baby potatoes themselves would be safe and sound in the dustbin during frost. Only the leaves would be frosted.

I've been to so many over the years, too numerous to mention but The Who at the Oval, Ziggy at the Rainbow, Pink Floyd at Earls Court and the Stones here there and everywhere.

Saw them on Sunday and still on a high. Couldn't speak when it was over, almost couldn't breathe! Just brilliant. From the first chord just have to get up and dance and sing.

Bitter sweet as well this time as my sister used to go and see them on tour in the 60s at groovy places like Wallington Public Hall and go backstage, and she got their autographs for me and photos and told her little sister lots of stories. I was entranced. But she died tragically last year from DVT after a long haul flight (Don't sit still for too long, it really happens) and I miss her desperately and wish she had been there on Sunday. Like to think she was sitting on her cloud watching.

Only topped on my 40th back in March when my mum's partner presented me with Weller's autograph, he'd bumped into him outside his office in the west end and had the presence of mind to ask for his autograph - he said the Mod Father was a bit taken a back when he said that I had been a fan of his since I was 12 and now I was turning 40, bit of reality check for the man I guess. Ok .....

Here goes... a while back ....I .was in correspondence ( e-mails etc) with a chap .. a really nice guy .. nothing heavy , just chit chat ( he's quite famous) and we talked about all sorts of things in a way that I'd never experienced previously with a man. We exchanged photos ( lots of them) and I sent him gifts for his birthday and Christmas etc. We followed the usual route of getting closer and closer as time went by, it was like having the most fantastic friend and lover but I'd never met him: so I asked him, if we could meet. He said, it would be nice but we couldn't. So I thought well, that's ok, we can carry on with the "on-line" thing. It came to pass that I needed to be in his home town for a work meeting and it being so far away from where I work, I had to stay over in a hotel. I asked my on-line friend, where the best place to stay would be and he told me. I said to him, it would be great if he could pop in and say hi, in the evening. He said that he couldn't cos he'd be on holiday in another country at the time. I was quite disappointed cos I'd actually engineered the situation where I'd need to be there for the meeting , we could have had it much closer to my place of work. I arrived at the hotel and checked in, went to my room, unpacked , showered , got dressed .. then went down to the hotel bar .. a fabulous room with a fantastic view. There was only one other person in the bar ....... it was my on-line friend. I my heart stopped, I didn't know what to do, I couldn't make my mouth work, I'm really shy you see, so I just sat there looking out of the window like an idiot for a few minutes then I spotted a piano, so I thought: do something!!!! What I should have done was said, hello: what I did, was play the piano ( rather badly) Elton John's Your Song. When I'd stopped playing .. he was gone..... I later found out that he'd flown half way around the world to be there....... I just want to go back, smile and say hello.....

Idea for a subject of the day: Moving On....

One of us lovely bloggers quoted a passage from Paulo Coelho's The Zahir about the importance of moving on - from people, houses, jobs, situations I suppose - when the time is right. Move on if necessary. Don't cling on to who you were but dust things out, make a fresh start, concentrate on becoming who you are rather than thinking about who you were. Coelho of course expresses it better than that but I can't find the bit just now!

One of my daughters (24 years old now) has had two important relationships with men and found in both cases that they are not the ones to be with for life. They don't help her to be the person whe wants to be, or to expand her life if you know what I mean. However she goes to the ends of the earth to remain friendly with them both and this causes great complications, inhibiting the development of new romantic ties! Any advice for her and those in her situation?

Similarly moving house, job and so on. We're thinking now of moving house as we need the money currently tied up in this perfect one. So-o-o- hard to find anything cheaper that could possibly replace it, but I recall some good advice when we came here with our 4 children 24 years ago (and one more born here) - "Love this home, but always be ready to let it go"

I'd like to have enough money to make sure my family were comfortable enough to be able to do whatever they wanted with their lives without being bogged down with the day to day bill paying stuff & then to be able to travel with my partner and see as much as the world as possible.

also i'd always wanted a career in music despite asking for help i think i'm too old now and from it being the "dream" bit maybe a reality i may never know.

    Hi All

Sorry I haven't been joining in with the chat today, just got out of bed, though unfortunately not due to some wonderful over indulgent evening last night, but because I have some sort of flu type bug! Though luckily the wonders of homeopathy are easing the symptoms.
Re the subject of the day - for a second it crossed my mind that a time machine to whisk me back 4 years would be good, 'tis a woeful tale of a gorgous bloke, an 18 year old having to choose between two men, choosing one in the hope the other would step in and prove he loved her more (I was always the romantic fool), this not happening and said girl marrying the other guy - 18 years, two children, a dog and a reasonably happy marriage later the gorgeous one steps back in to her life, twirls it upside down, inside out and begs her to go off with him. Despite knowing she has never stopped loving him and his presence back in her life for three wonderful, passionate, all she'd ever wished for months she says 'no', mostly for sake of the two early teens aged children and innocent husband who really doesn't derserve such abandonment, even though it totally breaks her heart and off the gorgeous one rides never to be seen or heard from again. Just for a second, my mind flickered to the wanting of a time machine and the chance to have the choice again, either 4 years ago or even way back to when I was 18.....but no, here I am now having stuck with a marriage that wasn't the best in the world but has won through against every odd, and was taken to the very brink of divorce - happier than I could have ever imagined and totally in love and committed to my husband. I learnt some very important lessons from that period in my life -

Be careful what you wish for, as you just might get it (And sometimes the reality of that is harsher than you could ever imagine)

You never know what the next second of your life will bring or where that will take you.

And, the grass can be so much greener your side of the fence if you pay it a bit more attention.

So instead I would wish to make it as a writer, which I have tried to on and off without any real serious conviction for 20 odd years, perhaps one day

On a lighter note - favourite TV shows when I ws a kid (though some of you young'ns probably won't know them - Trumpton, undoubtedly no. 1, Bagpuss, oh, and Hectors House (he definitely had a thing going with that frog next door!!!)

    Hi everyone,

Started to send in a shlog this morning, but one press of the wrong key- and it was all gone!

I have enjoyed reading through all the comments. It makes interesting reading and the sense of togetherness is good too. I think Chris will be well impressed!

I too don't believe in wanting to go back to earlier times and wonder what if? Having read Abi's #219 this morning I wondered what I would do if I could. Then I realised I'm doing it. We moved abroad and live in the countryside, we enjoy forest walks, fresh healthy air. I can indulge in baking cakes and bread, and spend time finally completing all those projects I started in a busier lifetime, patchwork quilts for a start. I might even get to achieve in part learning a foreign language. I've never been any good at that. But when living in... as they say.

The downside is of course not being close to family and friends so Barb's earlier comment #224 to become a pilot and fly my own plane from the garden would be just the thing.

However, a trip back to the UK is planned for next week, only thing is I might have trouble in keeping up with the shlog!

Are we ever truly happy and content?

I guess everyone has highs and lows, good times and bad; but all in all we lead very blessed lives really - all you need do is look at a newspaper, watch the news or look online to see that there is alot that is really not right with the world.

It's ok to have the bad times, it's ok to have the sad times, it's ok to have the what if times... if we didn't experience the lows then we would never know how sweet the highs can be!

I guess I'm an average person, had my heart broken more than once - but only ever once felt like there was no more hope; but I have fantastically full and happy life.

I have my job, I have my son, I have great friends, no-one 'special' but that will happen in its own good time and then there is the great dose of reality - the mortgage, the bills etc etc.

I truly believe that we only have one shot at this life and we have to do the best we can. We might not get it right everytime but you show someone who has!!!

Who would I be for a day? I think: one of the astronauts who went to the moon, and what I do differently is to bring back some pictures of the Earth (taken from the moon) . I can't understand why they didn't do that. It must have been the most spectacular view , the biggest thing in the sky: their own home planet, yet, they took no pictures..................
