SOMETIMES BY LUNCH TIME IT CAN BE TOO LATE.

Chris Evans | 14:08 UK time, Wednesday, 17 September 2008

Bought a paper this morning, there's a turn up...

for a start, as normally I don't have to time to buy a paper, let alone read one.

This morning however I thought might be different, I was showing my bank manager around bits of my life, he's been very nice to me of late, so why not ? And I thought maybe just maybe I could sneak five minutes for a cup of tea and a quick read in a lay-by somewhere. Of course this didn't happen as the morning seemed to disappear amidst conversations financial and otherwise. However I now find myself at work forty five minutes early for some bizarre reason, this never happens, I've even been able to grab a salad from the swanky sandwich shop over the road. So how about I treat myself to the joy of diving into a perfectly folded newspaper whilst I'm at it ?

Well here's the thing, what with the lightning speed of things a global going looney and changing again, most of the stories in the old rag have moved on at least three chapters since the print first hit the page.

Cold news is no news, cold stew is no stew.

A morning paper after lunchtime isn't a paper at all, it's merely reduced to the status of a TV guide with a crossword attatched to it.

So let's have a look at one across then...

1. Study backward boy and cause outrage (7)

As usual, timing is impeccable. Thanks Chris!

I wanna say outburst, but think it may be too obvious.

    Hi Chris,

Crossword? Not a chance! I wish I had the intelligence!

But I have to say to you, I LOVE reading my daily newspaper at lunchtime or in the evening when I get home. Yes, I know it's usually all rubbish and usually all "old" news, but I like it!

The news can be depressing, but for me, I have to know a wee bit of what's going on the world.

Next stop? Getting up at 4am to hear the Shipping News - that's what lies ahead for me and MrS!

    How about yobdraw?

I'm with you Chrissie - I buy the Telegraph on a Sat just because it has so many sections I can take them into work and they keep me going through the week!!

Posters are done. Have said he needs medication, which is a bit of a fib, but might appeal to some heartstrings.

Also booked tomorrows meal as me and him celebrate our 1st anniversary. That'll be another sha tin feast then. Read it slowly, but its more delicious than it sounds.

Currently have the made from scratch totally home made stroganoff doing its doobrie for tonight.

Had hisself in a fit of giggles earlier. We were discussing libido and fluctuation of such. He offered to go searching for it, I suggested he use a sniffer dog. Don't really know why he found it so funny....

    anyhoo, enuff now,

    til later,

Good luck finding the cat Mariella. We have one who disappears for days at a time, then re-appears when it suits him. Very worrying at first but we just had to get used to it. Last time he was away for 6 days and I really thought we had lost him, until I spoke to neighbouring farmer to told me he had seen a cat matching his description at his farm, so I went there and found him and took him home!

    Hi Chris
We buy The I........., every day, but they have increased the price, by 25%, How is that justified? May be they are going to buy one of the banks out. Do you think that £1 for a daily newspaper is a good buy? I think they may have lost a customer, we have been buying it since it came out. Which is quite a few years. I wonder how many people will also not be buying it. My partner will miss the crossword, as that is the first thing he does when he opens the paper.

  • Comment number 38.

Afternoon, evening, saluatations to you all

Firstly, newspapers. Love 'em. But not the scary-mary broadsheets. Oh no, I'm a tabloid girl. Raised on tabloids. Fave tabloids are the Sunday tabloids. Full of delicious gossip and non-entities and hardly any news!! Plus you tend to get trashy mags with them. Result!!

Also love Thursdays, as it's the day our beloved local paper comes out, the Free Press. It's not really free. It's 40p or so. It truly is to journalism what jam donuts are to weight watchers! Love it. Especially the WI Round-Up page. Some of the speakers they have in just must be made up .....

And can someone please explain the crossword answer. I was working on something "yob" too. Mind you, my crossword limits are women's weekly mags - and I never win a price despite texting my answers in in good time!

MW,a! hope you find kitty kitty kitty - which one is it? Although from memory they are all adoreable.

    How was Errol's Christmas Lunch?

And yum yum to the Sha Tin feast. Enjoy!! I will be thinking of you both with envy - it was truly delish.

And yes, a match would be good. As in footie. Not arson.

Well, the meeting went ok. I guess in hindsight it was a good job I was there really: although I revealed my adeptness at a certain software package we're shortly getting and have now "lumped" with the training of half a dozen staff in DTP shennanigans! Hey ho!

Left work at half three and survived the scary-mary dentist lady. I told her I was very nervous as i'd never seen a hygienist before and she was truly wonderful!! Now have shiny, cleaned and gleaming pegs to smile at people with.

    Annie - I missed you!!!

Hurrah for Come Dine ... tonight but will have to tape as it clashes with The Restaurant (come on Michelle and Russell!!!)

Hello to everyone else I've not mentioned - may be back later for a chat!

Love, peace and Rock and Grohl

But after half hour of chasing LM around I'm a hot, bothered, red faced etc. Just ask Cheryl she'll tell you...hehe.

Boleyngirl, forgot to mention, he used to be mega clingy. The playgroup asked me not to bring him for a while because he used to be sick once I left him. So I was nicely amused this afternoon, he is like a different child now, so confident.

Newspapers by the way....I used to get the Daily Mail but got very irritated with it. I now get the Mirror which does quite nicely for now. I skim through it in the morning. Lunchtime pick out the bits I've missed and teatime, read the little articles that I didn't bother with before.

But you don't rely on them for news anymore do you, more opinions, updates and gossip.

Oooops. Got a bit excited and hit the "post" button. Anyway .... the trailer ...

Remember a couple of weeks ago and the air geeetar / scratching CLP was doing to Walk This Way .... its in the trailer! Our very own lovely lambie pie at his peak. And that's not all .... oh no .... it also features Love Muscle Russell and the divine Matt Morgan (Rusty's side-kick and writing partner), and the guv'nor, Mr Jonathan Ross.

Russell in a black cape and Rossy in a ... purple cardy!!?? I always picture Mr Ross on a Saturday morning sitting there dapper in one of his swish suits, but it would appear he does his show in a purple cardy. Oh well.

Fab trailer tho - catch it if you can!

    As for the papers

I read that Russell Brand is having tough times in America though. Seems they don't appreciate his humour .. this will get moderated but I thought describing a certain President as a retarded cowboy quite funny actually.

But ... I do get very tired of seeing pictures of scantily clad women with breasts all over the place. What happened to demure, class style..

    Morning all

Papers???? Like the sudokos, occasionel crosswards, but speling very bad sonot goood at them. Sunday paper horoscopes for keeping on track with life....Otherwise abs rubbish. How many of the stories are fun/ positive/good news???? Even the trash gossip is sad reflection of where we are as a society, and not much for our young uns to aspire to.. (esp the scantily clad 'girls' PP)

Apparently after the war our papers and radio news was 80% good news as nation needed spirits lifted, now it is 90% bad news/negative. How much of current economic climate could have been at least slowed down if not for scaremongering in papers and news?

Hey ho though, blog always good for a cheer up and good stories so that's why we're here.

    Morning PP and dreamur

PP - I kind of guessed it would be tough for Russell in the U S of A. His humour can be hard to get (Mr Diva doesn't get "it" at all) and the people over the pond do seem to like being spoon fed their punchlines on a plate.

I think he needs to concentrate on one thing. At the mo, he's going for global domination over there: acting, presenting, stand-up, general man about town etc. I guess they know him first and foremost as that guy in the Sarah Marshall film. I'm also guessing he may be in for a rude awakening once they really get to learn about his past (the drugs, 9/11 stunt and all that jazz).

Having said that, I was sooooo gutted when there was no podcast this week for his show: it wakes me up in the mornings and ensures i leave my house with a smile on my face. Also like to do my ironing to his "Doing Life" DVD.

Having said that, in my opinion, part of the success of his radio show is due to Matt Morgan and Noel Gallagher too.

Morning all, it's a gorgeous early autumn day here in leafy Warwickshire (well I've got a hedge outside me front window). The sun is out and I'm thinking - barbecue tonight maybe, could be the last chance?

I thought Russell Brand's comments were hilarious, wish I could have seen all those A listers squirming. brilliant. Not sure about Rich Hall Chezza, there's something about him gives me the creeps.

I had a brilliant idea for ARF at about 1.00 this morning when I got up to see who my daughter was talking to (herself, in sleep), but I've completely forgotten it! Doh.

Debs, re.clinginess, my first one hade terrible trouble settling in at playgroup owing to the fact that by that time she was more at home discussing the FTSE index than throwing sand about randomly. The worst thing is I can remember getting really stressed by it and trying to talk to her "like a grown-up" on the way home about how hard it was for me! She was 3 years old! Both more chilled now, 13 years later, thank the lord.

In fact, my mate there could turn the photocopier on with her tummy. She find that out by pure accident.

    Was it a big tummy?

Hmmm, quite I suppose. Luckily she thought it really funny.

And I would always try to fix it myself. The engineer that used to turn up stank!

The workchild thinks the photocopier is a magic machine - partly my fault as it didn't see me putting a photograph of it on the plate - it was quite shocked (workchild - not photocopier!) when their face appeared on the paper at the other end! Hee Hee.

I think through the company that provided the photocopier, if I remember correctly.

    We had it under contract.

I've just seen my 17 year old cat chase next doors cat out of the garden, she was like a little rocket, go Itsy!

Stinky men, no excuse. On one of my younger daughter's many trips to casualty the doctor's BO was so bad I felt sick for the rest of the day. The nurses kept spraying impulse in the air when he went out of the room. However, don't mean to sound sexist, as women can be stinky too.

Go on Cheryl, get your spanner out.

    Rock on Itsy!

    Hello

have been de-fuzzed, de-frizzed, and de-fingernailed. Well, not de-fingernailed but couldn't think of an F word (other than the obvious). Fingers are now tipped with brilliant glittery red, apart from the pinkies which are leopard print - naturally. Within 10 minutes I have scuffed 2 of them and have wrinkles on another. Oh well.

Still no sign of the puddytat. Blummin booger that he is.

So glad the kitten could make a deposit. Did any of my advice help?

My dad is the techno / gadget phobe in our household. My mum bought him a new computer monitor for his birfday and he thought it was a dvd player. Now he just gets socks and sweets.
I remember the first time I used a mobile phone. About 20 or so years ago, in Sainscos car park. I went and hid behind a big lorry as I felt so stoopid. It was a big massive brick type thing that gave me RSI from all the dialling and lifting.

    Hmm, how times change....

Thanks Debbie. That helped a tad!

MW,a! - i hate scuffing nails on leaving the nail bar. most irritating. Will probably do just that on Saturday morn.

Have been asked to meet very good friend on Friday night - she needs an ear and a shoulder. And lots and lots of hugs.

    B's,

Our location is a bit special. We live half a mile away from our nearest neighbour down a dirt track. CtD and DtH were somewhat concened as I left the normal highway and started careering down the lane when they paid a visit.
We are surrounded by fields on one side and a river on the other. He has always pretty much stayed in the garden, venturing occassionally up to the bridge on the lane but no further. We know he has been seen on the outskirts of the village recently and I worry as he has no common sense and no real experience of traffic.

Still, posters are up so here's hoping

    MW, a!

Isn't it satisfying when you get to eat the things you grow. I'm anxiously awaiting 6 plums to ripen and 8 brambley's. Also I found a 4ft marrow - a courgette hid from me;( Any ideas what to do apart from chutney and stuffed marrow?

Don't give up hope. My mum had a cat that suddenly went missing for over 6 days I think. She turned up home but after that, every now and then she would go for a wander for a few days.

Lots of luck with getting him back.

Mum and dad live opposite a school. One day the caretaker came over and asked if she would take in a dog that he had found wandering around the playground.

Mum, being mum, said of course and off he went to fetch the dog.

When he came back he was carrying my mum's dog which had escaped and she hadn't even realised.

At least I know where I get it from hehe!

To clarify, CtD can indeed confirm:

MW,a! and Errol-TP live in the most beautiful location. If you describe it as "just off the AXX" it don't sound nice at all. But, down a lane we went, over some bumps, bit more lane ... and then Voila! Their pad. Yes, it is beautiful. And special. My only concern being .... can you still get pizzas / kebabs / indians etc delivered???

And as for post #49 .... Debbie - hot? Bothered? Red faced? You were cool as the proverbial cucumber, my dear! I still can't believe LM was "playing up" at the zoo place. My God Son has quite literally got horns coming out of this bonce!!

btw: just had a text: our friends have had their twins. one of each type - a pink onr and a blue one! aaaaaaaah xxx

What to do with a 4ft marrow?!:) Well coming up to Halloween? Perhaps you could dress it up? Ideas for dressing up a marrow?! You could sell it on ebay. Donate to your local MP for use in the House Of *s . Otherwise chutney good option. Then maybe you could become member of your local WI - a regular feature on this blog!!
