SO HERE'S THE SECRET TO THE... DO YOU WANT TO KNOW IF IT'S A BOY OR A GIRL THING

Chris Evans | 15:36 UK time, Wednesday, 22 October 2008

My wife and I figured it out last night...

...after being seduced by the magical spell of a new baby yesterday we were discussing whether or not we should discover the sex of our little human-to-be.

Up to now we have been convinced we are going to have a boy but still wanted to leave it as a surprise. Last night though we discussed that if we continued to go down the it's- definitely-a-boy route and it turned out to be a girl, it might not be so fair on the little lady. Not a single logical reason as to why we suspect maledom, it's just been a feeling.

We seriously considered finding out next time we visit Doctor Stirrups. Would this be a cop out though ? Were we bottling it ?

It was at this point we realised that all the couples we'd talked to who were also going to leave it as a surprise somehow seemed to find out "accidentally."

We concluded that these "accidents" were manufactured because they just couldn't wait but didn't want to admit it.

If you are reading this Dr. Stirrup and you "accidentally" see anything bobbing around or not bobbing around on the next scan and you "accidentally" mention it to us, we won't hold it, whatever "it" may be against you.

CLP.

NNNNoooooooooo - please don't do it. Let the excitement continue and be really excited and surprised come the big day. I don't think it's going to make a scrap of difference to 'the little lady' if she's thought of as a boy until she arrives (maybe).

Go on - keep it a surprise, you know you want to...

When I was pregnant with my Son - when I talked about castrating my husband, my womb would tense up and hurt like mad.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, when I did the same... nothing, when I talked about labour I had that feeling.

The Blob inside knows. Give it different examples of physical torture......it'll tell you that way.

One thing is for sure tho, It'll be a boy or a girl. .....

The technology to tell has only be around for not long. For thousands of years it has been the ultimate in surprises - and so it should remain!!!

Apparently the hospitals up here won't tell you and even have posters up asking you not to ask coz they won't say - something to do with being sued in the past for getting it wrong - I ask you!!!!

Whatever it is - it will be loved just the same.

    Chris,

Unless there's an over-riding reason for knowing (for example you need to buy stuff in readiness thats either blue or pink) then i don't think you ask or even know. I'm old fashioned though so maybe i'm not the right person to seek advice from. I only had one kid and i wished she was a boy but alas it was not to be but i was very VERY happy that she was healthy and have NEVER held the fact that she's a girl against her (now it turns out it was a good thing for her to be a girl as girls are daddies girls)

    Anyway . . . . . DON'T find out until it's time you'll regret it if you do :-D

CLP ...... please don't make me larf too hard: it starts off my coughing, y'see. But Dr Stirrups!! Classico - muchos gracias!

My daddy desperately wanted me to be a boy. That's why I have this in-built love of The Beautiful Game. While mummy was pushing me into the world, daddy was on the old North Bank at HIghbury watching The Gunners beat West Ham in the opening game of the season (August baby, y'see). I still think, that had I been a wee baby boy, he'd have had me signed up for the Junior Gunners Academy before I could walk.

Then I was almost christened Samantha. But that's another story.

Leave it to the day and a big surprise, is what I say. For what it's worth ....

Mind you ... if you did know, it would make the baby shower easier for us ..... !!

    Well one and all

Surprises are nice and I think whatever a baby you think you are having will turn out to be the opposite... sex that is.

Must say having a baby though, what a long haul.
Takes me back to my first trip to hospital where I nearly did a runner.
From being a World Traveller Champagne Clubber I ended up with a nurse calling me Mum and how to bath a baby and later discovered I could not drive a pram.

    Chris,

The moment I found out I was pregnant, I was certain I was having a boy. Absolutely certain. The only thing is - I really wanted a girl - I kept this completely secret from everyone.

When MsS made her appearance I was utterly over the moon, but I really mean this, if the baby had been a boy, there would have been no disappointment.

MrS and I didn't want to know in advance, but everyone must do it their own way.

For the record, I think you and Natasha are having a girl!!

  • Comment number 27.

Ah bless CLP and Natasha, it must be tempting. But you know what. You're in for a lifetime of surprises no matter what.

When the Genius daughter crashed into my world and changed it forever, I'd been convinced she was a boy. Being from a family of girlies, and as the rugger-bugger DDF Eric used to announce that he was fetlock-deep in women; and even the dog's a bitch... actually that doesn't seem so funny now I've put it in print; I should've given him a thick ear...anyway, there I was, certain that she was going to incarnate male. When she was finally placed in my arms after a bit of a struggle that ended in her bein' sucked out with the Dyson and a pair of salad-servers, boy did she look cross and who could blame her. For my part I was thunderstruck. I hadn't thought of myself with a daughter. But she was so utterly gorgeous and delicious (yes, yes I know, what she actually looked like was a pound of mussels), that this feeling subsided in approximately 3 seconds.

And now, 28 and a bit years later, I cannot imagine anything different.

And I'm with Sall. Baby's bottoms are ripe for biting. Yummy yum yum delicious. In fact I only bit her bottom a couple of nights ago.

Mind you that was only because we were sharin' a bed when she decided to perform her hilarious trick of trappin' me beneath the duvet and breakin' wind. So all's fair and all that.

Ok I said she was female and a Genius. I never said she was ladylike. Bless her.

  • Comment number 28.

Chris I too was convinced I was having a boy, again not really based on too much - hubby wouldn't let me find out as he likes surprises ( I hate them!!!) but we had a baby girl and it was the BEST surprise ever - and people are right it is great to have a surprise at the end of all that effort!!!!
    Be Patient!!

Just to add to you Clodagh

    Responsible Mothers.

My daughter came home from school one day and announced that the following day was a party and they were to wear fancy dress.

Well infact they had known for weeks but she just forgot to mention it before.

I had little to hand so I decided to use a black bin bag and cut out numbers and adds and minus signs...

She said what's this as I placed it over her head.... It's Black Adder you know .....all the others went dressed as fairies and she threatened to report me to child line....

  • Comment number 30.

I say wait and see on the big birth day...when will you ever get a surprise like this again? Keep this one a surprise and then when you go on to have babies 2, 3 etc you can choose to find out then :)

  • Comment number 33.

I was absolutely certain teen2 was a boy - everything about the pregnancy was totally different. So I was so surprised to meet her! And delighted.

Whatever you decided, CLP, do us a favour and keep it to yourself! It's one of the best bits about other people having babies -waiting to see. When my brother-in-law and his lovely wife were having there's we already knew what she was, what her name was and what time she was going to born! Where's the fun in that? She's gorgeous though, and full of surprises herself which kind of makes up for it!

I love babies. Love 'em. Catching up with a mate and her 6 month-old next week (half-term - yey hey!), can't wait. Love the hands, feet, chubby thighs, laugh, expressions etc. Not everything though, especially having to wear beige for a year to hide the sick and poo (yes, I know that's an old Victoria Wood joke but it's so true!

    Anyway, gotta go and taxi.

To all the lovely bloggers and lurkers - hello, get-well, cheer-up, whatever you need to do! Well done for all the skipping BM - have to confess I didn't do it today with my ropey throat - more of a round shouldered trudge! 5 hours of singing with a bad throat - not a good move. Might go back over and check the name of that whizzy cough bottle recommended for CtD by Chrissie, sounds fun.

Not knowing the gender of your baby may add to magic of parenthood but it can be useful to know one way or the other, especially if you are so convinced that you have bought the clothes, chosen the name a put the child down for the right school.

From next Monday as I've already been committed this week.

PP, I went to a Christmas Party as a Candle. As you said, everyone else was a fairy etc (odd, my school, but the lads did look sweet) but the thing that broke my heart was that my poor mother, who worked her fingers to the bone making the dee-amn thing, didn't even get an honourable mention in the prize giving...and it was some bimbo in some shop-bought LADYBIRD (for Gawd's sake not even blimmin' FESTIVE!!!) who won first prize.

Anyhoo, Christophe, a word of advice...whoever the babe turns out to be, please ensure an entire cupboardful of alternative fancy dress outfits.

As well as the obligatory unisex Oshkosh dungers of course.

So, as long as 'it' has ten of everything it needs ten of, two of everything it needs two of, and three of everything it needs three of...and the pair of you for parents, you ain't gonna go far wrong...

    PP Hahaha excellent, Good Girrdl!!

Ah the fancy dress. I have in my archive that the daughter calls the Torture Chamber a lovely photo of her second birthday, in the centre of fairies, elves, an astronaut, two clowns, a scarecrow, a bumble bee and a rather good pantomime horse, and there she is. Polly Puke the punk rocker.

Blonde curls spiked up and dyed pink with cake colouring, little vest ripped and adorned with safety pins and graffiti, little black bondage pants and black wellies; Siouxie Sioux eat your heart out.

Ere. Maybe that's it... I wonder if Nancy Spungen ever held Sid Vicious' head under the bedclothes...?

And naturally for a girl given a name normally reserved for budgies, she had to go to the school fancy dress as a parrot, where she sorted out a badly-behaved Superman with one whack of her beak. I don't think he ever recovered, when last heard of he was carted off from Chester Zoo's bird house with a panic attack.

  • Comment number 52.

    Oh yes. FYI.

I am reminded of the DDF Eric's near tragedy when he went to the fancy dress as Man In A Suitcase, and somebody nicked the key to 'is padlock.

Ergo, when designing a fancy dress, especially if your intention is to imbibe copious amounts of beer, take heed as to how you're going to have a wee.

  • Comment number 53.

I've had a boy and a girl and both pregnancies were different, when I was pregnant with my girl I had a huge craving for chocolate and sweet things (I rarely do otherwise), other Mums I know who were pregnant with girls had this too. Also - a bit biological (hope no one gets offended with the language) here but a woman's secretions in the downstairs department can be the same as when she's ovulating - this indicates high oestrogen which when pregnant can indicate a girl, hence the cravings for sweet things.

Don't find out the sex though, you've not got long to wait now. It's worth the excitement of finding out when it's born. It really doesn't matter if you think it's one sex or the other, just make sure everything you've bought for it is generic.

  • Comment number 54.

    Beesmum xxx

CLP apart from my initial comment of final decision is maybe - haven't actually given my opinion - no - don't find out what you're having - but I'm with Bingo - it's a boy or we could be wrong and it's a girl!

  • Comment number 55.

BM, hahaha, me in a puffball skirt! Am thinking papier mache with a gym ball (not that I own one, will need to acquire) or some sort of wire contraption like one of those paper lampshades. I would like it to go over my head and down to my knees, with eyespaces so I can look out for teens doing unmentionables.

Is this, in the modern parlance, a bit too big an ask?

Got few minutes respite as half the family watching Hero's (what on the lord's earth is that all about) while teen 2 is doing her own tap tap tapping on downstairs computer. Ah, families!

    Can't swallow without exquisite pain.

Debs, am "harvest-festivalled-out" , as a music teacher, but of course it's different when the little person is yours! Oats and beans and barley grow... enjoy! And make sure your tins and packets are in date or people will talk.

If you've got a good joke, tell it at every available opportunity.

Of course your idea of what constitutes a good joke may not be the same as anyone else's, but the more times they hear it the more they have the chance to get to love it.

Having said that my kids have threatened to have me reported to social services if I tell a couple of particular jokes once more.

We had our little girl in Spetember. We found out her sex as soon as we could and I'm really glad we did. Everyone kept telling us that we were "spoiling the surprise" but honestly the overwhelming emotion you feel when you know what your child will be is amazing. My hubby went into shock! Then you have loads of time to absorb it and plan! Plus, it helped me to bond as I was able to start calling my bump Sophie and prepare myself to have a daughter. And seriously - how can you "spoil" the birth by knowing what you're having!!! It has nothing to do with loving your child less which I personally feel is a terrible thing to say.
Plus - we got loads more free stuff as all our friends were able to pass on their children's pink clothes throughout our pregnancy!! Thanks guys xxx

Going back to fancy dress outfits, boleyngirl might be interested to know I went to a halloween bash as a pumpkin aged about 10. I seem to remember a large orange sheet and a couple of the hoops you try to keep swinging above your hips where the main basis of this costume. If I remember rightly my head stuck out the top and my shoulders and the hoops (I guess they must've been sewed in some how, but I forget) formed the pumpkin shape with my legs sticking out the bottom. It worked quite well til there was some game which involved running though arches made by other people. One, I didn't fit though the arches and two, I could barely reach to form an arch past my costume! I suspect I'd need a bigger orange sheet now, but the basic idea should still work if you're still short of ideas, boleyngirl and it shouldn't be quite as messy as paper mache!

Boleyngirl, a friend of mine is (in)famous for having an inflatable pumpkin costume, I'm pretty sure you could get one at an online auction site, or a fancy dress shop. I think it even had a hat with a stalk on it......

Right guys that's me. I'm off.

But before I go, I've been thinking.

Kyle, I fear you were right. I was a little patronising and for that I humbly apologise. It was not my intention nor ever would be; I do not rate my own intellectual capacity so highly above anyone else's that it would be necessary.

I meant what I said of course, but all I was attempting was to lighten the mood; but isn't it interesting how the dynamic of the written word is different to the face-to-face. That's why texting can be dangerous. Particularly when, like me, your friends are all such eejits. You can never be certain of the intent without the accompanying body language. I've fallen foul of our Baz on several occasions this way and once left him stranded at Dublin Airport all night because I thought he was messing. So sorry, chuck.

As regards the pumpkin, I would refer to my earlier missive re. accessibility when you want a wee. Achtung. But if you can get hold of some orange neoprene- you know, wetsuit fabric- you'll find it easier.

Mind you I'd go as a bat. What is it they say about fancy ress costumes betraying the inner self.

Righto. May lurk a bit if I have time but for now I've me rubber ring on and am doin' me hornpipe as I speak.

    Take care.

    morning all

MrsW#1 didn't want to know what our first was going to be but MrsW#2 and me both knew what both of ours were before they arrived. Can't say it detracted from the magical moment of meeting them for that first time at all so go with the flow, find out if you want. We never told anyone we knew to keep it as 'our secret' Either way it's a trwasured moment when you meet a child for the first time

Hope you're all well out there in blogland, sorry for the sporadic postings but just been ever so

    Morning all
Can we please have some snow, I love it!
My sis lived in VT for a good few years and they had snow Oct-Mar so she absolutely hates it but I went to visit her in 2000 and it was lovely. February, bitterly cold and snow everywhere, xmas lights still on houses as was too cold to bring 'em in but it was lovely. Didn't feel anywhere near as cold as it does here as it's dry!
    Oh well, we can dream!

    Morning

Many years ago my sister moved to South Carolina in the States about this time. Her first job was making trick or treat costumes for her very young children. She dressed her 4 year old boy in a ghost outfit.

For many months after she was treated very wierdly by the local 'moms' until the photos from the night came back.

Her ghost outfit was an exact replica of the klu klux klan outfits!

They all got over it eventually!

Well, the sheer cheek of it .....

Thursday here in deepest rural Suffolk is local paper day. I LOVE our local paper - it absolutely makes The Framley Examiner** lok like the Telegraph. Anyhoo, I digress ...

Admitedly I don't look my best this week, but really, was there any need for the spotty oik round the local shop to give me his very best "Hallowe'ens not for another weeke yet love" look!?!?!?

So I've skulked home, locked the door and won't go out til I look semi-human again. Promise!

** Framley Examiner - if you've not heard of it, goog it. It's brillig! (BM - don't have tea in mouth when reading tho, screen splat guaranteed)

So, Jackie Collins. Yes ...... when all my 13 year old classmates were still reading Jackie and Blue Jeans, I'd moved on to Lovers and Gamblers, The Stud, Rock Star, Hollywood Wives ...... blissful no-brainer reading. I had a break away from her as I thought she was getting too samey, but then saw one I'd not read as part of a 3 for a tenner deal so took a chance. This one's about Lucky thingyjig too but it's actually quite enjoyable! (Drop Dead Beautiful).

All this talk of pumpkim costumes is getting me quite 'cited for Hallowe'en. May invest in some spoky H@rib0 sweets!

    Laters.

Has anyone read the latest TopGear magazine? It has alot about Chris and how he bought a £5.5million black Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder at a car auction and he's ranked 27th in their car-related rich list with a fortune of £45m! I'd need a job like a radio DJ to leep me entertained enough actually to still be working with that!
