Sunday September 6th 1900 hrs...ish

Chris Evans | 08:32 UK time, Monday, 7 September 2009

So here I am the night before, Knight of the Realm - Sir Terence of Wogan announces to the world that after almost three decades of waking Great Britain up with his unique style of broadcasting badinage and brilliance, he is off...and I'm taking over his hottest Breakfast show hot seat.

The announcement was supposed to happen in two weeks' time but an almost flawless statement of the facts as they stand appeared in today's press and so Terry is going to make an official statement during his show tomorrow to keep a lid on things.

It's very much Terry's story not mine, as well it should be. To step down from something you have done so well and for so long and obviously still enjoy doing, must be a tough call even for such a stoic as Sir Tel.

I just went for a walk in the garden with my son Noah to contemplate what might happen in the next twenty four hours and who knows what else in the next few years. With the last of the day hanging on to say goodbye, I looked into his seven month old big bluey brown eyes as they sparkled magically. He was gazing around in wonder at something he'd never seen before, the magnificence that is the deep green of the trees' leaves surrendering to the first tones of a new season under an already golden sky, his first Autumn beginning to take shape.

All the perspective I needed.

Good luck Mr. W. I promise I will do my utmost not to let you and your listeners down. x.

    Congratulations Chris,

I hope that they find someone nearly as good to take the drivetime slot.
Life won't be the same though as I imagine that lots of your listners won't be able to hear you anymore due to being at work :-(

Still, at least we get to keep you for a while longer.

    All the best,
    Mary.

It seems a long, long time since you last hosted a ´óÏó´«Ã½ breakfast show, and I've been with you the whole way.
You deserve this, and I can't wait.

Congratulations Chris. Are Foxy and Johnny coming too?
Two problems I foresee for myself are

1: I now need to get up in the morning and
2: Who's going to take over the drive time slot!

  • Comment number 5.

    Good Luck Chris :)
Shame that I now won't get to hear you as I'll be en route/ in work when you're on (would imagine many of your listeners will be in the same boat!)
Who's taking the Drive Time show over?!

  • Comment number 6.

    Morning Chris,

I was bereft this morning when I heard that Sir Tel was stepping down as I love him, but then my spirits lifted when I heard that you were taking over xx Excellent news and well done.

Congratulations Christoff, you deserve it! And yay, you can be home to do Noah's bath & bed at night! I can't wait, is it true that Mr.Mayo is going to take over drivetime?
Is Sally coming with you hunni? Let's hope you can take some of the drivetime team with you.
Will miss Terry though, mind you, he has been taking more and more time off recently so had an inkling something was afoot. Then saw the Mail yesterday and it was confirmed.
Let's hope that nothing changes with the blog though - not that anyone ever talks to me on here wahhhhhhhhhh!
Love to you all. Chris, congrats again hunni you will be ace!!! xxx

Nicely put Christophe. Terry will be sadly missed but waking up to you will be such a joy!! Must admit I definitely concur with Amy above and say a hearty NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to SM too. Nothing against him personally but he's just not got that sparkle that Drivetime requires. Let's hope the powers that be take notice of the listeners on this one and give us someone a bit more fun. What about Aled? He's got a lovely humour and deserves a shot at something a bit bigger I reckon.

Good luck for the new slot CLP. Love ya loads. xxx

bet Chris is dreading today, lets hope he is hiding away in his garage with Noah and a bacon buttie before the madness starts!

  • Comment number 16.

Chris, I think you're taking on too much. A new baby, a new early, early show AND drivetime. When will you get to see the wife !!!!

Morning peeps - Congrats Chris, but you will be missed on Drivetime.
May have to sort out a radio and headphones so I can listen to more than the first 15 mins!

Please keep up the blog - we all love it so much.

Terry - happy retirement, altho I suspect it will be a bit semi-retirement and you will pop up for some specials.

Happy birthday JTT - have a good one xx

  • Comment number 18.

    Well done Chris

I was as pleased as punch when Mr Wogan announced I will be waking up and getting ready for work with you every morning!!

Does this mean that Johnny Walker will get his Drivetime slot back again, he usually stands in for Terry on his holidays but he is too good to waste on standing in

You do know that you will have to get up early now don't you? Will you still do all request Friday because that would be great in the Morning

    Eeeky

  • Comment number 19.

Well done Chris! Although I will miss Terry and his bawdy humour I am looking forward to you accompanying me on my journey to work.
Please don't let Mayo take over he's too dull/smashy and nicey for me.
How about Stuart McConie? He's always been good when filling in on drive time!

  • Comment number 20.

Yay Rips mwahhhhhhhhh you've made my day!!! xxxxx

  • Comment number 21.

ooooooo another thought - Wiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllll has just reappeared - Wiiilllllllllllllllllll for drivetime!
Methinks Chris been hiding him until the last week or two just in time for the announcement!

  • Comment number 22.

Was anyone else trying to put make up on when Sir Terence of Wogan made his speech? Is very difficult to put mascara on when your eyes are streaming. I thought I had it cracked until he played Stardust! Good Luck, Terry, enjoy the well earned rest

And Good Luck Chris for the Breakfast Show. Used to love listening to you in the mornings and now we'll be back again. Within minutes, a TOG -Baz? - had said they could all become COGs so can I apply to be one of your first COGs.

Good Luck to Radio 2 and all who sail in her!

Simon Mayo expected to take over Drivetime. I do like him but he's not Chris! Mind you, I like Wogan as a gentle way to ease into the day. Chris will wake us up with a bang!! All change but I'm sure it'll all be good.

Have just read back over end of last blog & Think some of the suggestions for new R2 line up brill.

Diva, I'm with you. Bring back Noel!! Do you remember when he did wind up on DLT Pub Quiz? Hystreical!!

Also, I quite like Mayoooooo. Am always flitting around cooking & sorting kids homework & stuff at end of day so always had to make a point if I wanted to listen to something with Chris. Morning is Kitchen - radio on, car -radio on & office - radion on so will hear more of Chris this way.

Just really hope he's taking the team with him. That'll make it perfect.

And another thing! I know it's not All Request Monday but wouldn't it be appropriate for Chris to play the Yeh Yous tonight? "I didn't want to get out of bed this morning, but it feels much better, to know I'm getting up with you". Just a thought! :-)

  • Comment number 37.

IF SIMON MAYO DOES THE DRIVEYTIME SLOT I BOYCOTT IT IN PROTEST!!!!!!

    Simon Mayo is TERRIBLE.

When he covers for Chris I always turn of and revert to CD's or even worse Radio 4!!!

The best drivetime DJ's other than Chris were Pete & Geoff from the station formerly known as Virgin. Now if Radion 2 could get them back together for Drivetime that would be perfect!

Wiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllllllllllllllll gotta be around somewhere let's hope.
Surely they gotta pull someone big out the bag for drivetime? Chris pulled the listeners in big time. Let's hope he thrashes Moyles on the breakfast slot.
Paul O'Grady fell out with Channel 4 hasnt he? Maybe thats on the cards.....

  • Comment number 46.

All very odd and life will never be the same. But PLEASE NO to SM for Drivetime. It will turn people off in their droves. Anybody listening to the thread?!!?

Good luck Chris and Good Luck Sir Tel. Both sterling presenters!

  • Comment number 47.

I thinks it's fantastic news, well done Chris. If anyone can take over the great Sir Tel, it is you. Hopefully my kids will still be listening to you as they approach their forties, like me with Sir Tel!!

  • Comment number 48.

IF SIMON MAYO COMES ON DRIVETIME SLOT ....i will resort to our local radio station Heart .. and that is depressing enough!!!!!!

could always try and get James Whale he entertaining !

  • Comment number 49.

Just for balance and as I have been saying for about a year.....Simon Mayo is perfect for the drivetime slot.

Not that it matters anyway - you can't please all of the people any of the time.

Everyone will adjust to whatever happens, just like they did when CLP took over the drive time slot!

I can imagine a few TOGS have upped their medication on hearing the news this morning......Eh Clodagh??!!

My girls and I will really miss you on drivetime. And Fridays at 5ish just won't be the same. I don't know who else I would enjoy sharing my Martini time with.

It is sad that Tel is going but mornings will be a different sort of fun now...

forgot to say CLP will easily beat Moyles he is waaaaaay dull anytime I've tried him (usually when Tel is on his jollies) I get bored with all the long pauses. CLP never stops, his brain is 100MPH always another idea ready to trip off the tongue.

  • Comment number 59.

Yours was the only show I ever listened to, was gutted when you disappeared from my morning journeys to work 12 years ago (is it really that long ago) and stopped listening to the radio all together.
I for one will be tuning in, see you there!

  • Comment number 60.

    Hi
I have just heard the news that Chris Evans is to take over the morning slot from Sir Terry. I was one of the listeners that complained when Chris started in the Drivetime slot, thinking he would not do the programme justice but he has proved me wrong. He has worked hard to build up a brilliant programme and I would like to wish him well in his new morning programme. He is a talented and gifted man. Chris, you will be fantastic.

  • Comment number 61.

    Hi Chris,

I am just so pleased for you to be given the most prestigious show on British radio - congratulations!

However, I am really upset to see Terry go - I will miss him so much, - he was fantastic this morning when he said he wants to go "while we are stil in love" I was in tears!

I have absolutely no doubt that you will convert the TOGS, and you will make the breakfast show your own!

Chrissie - me too, runny mascara at 8am, so not a good look.

Bloggers all, t'aint it grand that we all like/dislike different things - me, Rips, Jonathon Ross for example!! When something new comes on we can either listen & give it a try or do something else, the change station button is always an option. I remember when Johnnie Walker stepped down(which he said was his choice) I think there were a lot of people who doubted Chris would be up to the job but when they listened to him and not the hype & reputation, they changed their minds. I'm sure ratings are what will count in the Bosses minds. i hope we not going to get too stressed about it all.

    Loving you all

Im sorry to see Terry Wogan go as he is really funny in a morning but I must admit I dont get to listen to the show that often as only tend to get to listen to it when up early so Im quite happy for Chris Evans to take the show.

I only tend to listen to Drivetime when Im out and about and cant find anything else to listen too,If you're travelling around Scotland then you'll know what I mean. However I always make sure I listen to Simon Mayo when on the Drivetime show and make sure I dont miss a show when he is on as sorry Chris,he is so much funnier than you.Everyone has there own taste's.Just like some of Chris's audience may not be Mayo fan's then Im sure people will agree that some of Terry's audience wont be Chris fan's.People tend to move around the day to listen to who you want too.

For all of you who say that you wont be able to listen now, then how about ´óÏó´«Ã½ Iplayer!!! Or are you not big enough fan's to download the shows and listen when you like?

Personally it will be good to listen to Simon Mayo on a normal portable Radio and not try and get a DAB reception on a DAB portable/Walkman type as its hit and miss alot of the time and thats in London!

Bob Bollard should come over from Radio 5 with Simon Mayo as well as they make a good team on 5Live and get rid of the incomptent "Sally Traffic" Send her to Radio 5 live or put her on nights or something as Lynn Bowles makes a great team and laugh with Ken Bruce so she definately needs to stay on mornings.

Congrats Chris,I'll give you a listen when I can but I'll definately be listening to Drivetime from now on if Mayo gets the slot.

With a bit of luck Sarah Kennedy will take the hint,God I dislike that show :-)

Oh dear, yet another radio show on the "off" list.

  • Comment number 71.

Glad to see Graham Norton is doing Steve Wright's Show for a week.Everyone that has stood in for Steve Wright seems to be able to do a better show than Steve.

Funnily enough everytime Radio 2 has a stand in then they are usually better than the resident's. Clive Anderson standing for Jeremy Vine was brilliant and Clive definately needs to be on the air more.

Pity Johnny Walker isnt doing the Brekkie Show as again I think he's very funny.

Well done Christoph, you will be missed on the drivetime show, that's for sure!

I think a new show will almost certainly call for new ideas and a different format. I suspect you have some already buzzing around in your head. I have to admit I don't like change but these things happen and we have to get used to it. Maybe Tel can sit in for you when you have your breaks. Then we get the best of both worlds. As for the drive time presenter, I reckon it's in the bag, but would prefer it if it's not Mayo! I wholeheartedly agree with others, while changes are afoot, please retire SK, has she not been sick yet again of late?!!

As a sidenote on twitter today a lot of the americans think that Chris Evans the hollywood actor is coming to the UK to start a radio show - how weird is that? lol.

    Good Luck

    Paul in Greenwich.

Chris, I'm absolutley thrilled for you and it's no less than you deserve. You've probably opted for the largest shoes in broadcasting to fill but I have no doubt you'll do a fantastic job. I'm really, genuinely excited about you starting our day, getting us up with a smile on our faces and cheering us right up by the time we all get to work.

If I heard that Liza Tarbuck was taking over Drivetime I think I'd combust with excitement. Really, really missed her on Saturday.

Well done again Chris - exciting times and don't forget that we're all right behind you chuck.

    xx

Sad to see Wogan step down. But I understand his reasons. If he just kept going, we'd grow sick of him eventually. So, good riddance, I say. But it was one of the best shows on the radio.

I hope that Johnnie Walker continues to stand in on the breakfast show, when Chris is away. He's brilliant. And Walker should get drivetime back, as well.

I'm new here! Gosh, you are a lively lot!

Good luck to Chris. I am really looking forward to his new show. Sorry, Tel, but with the exception of Janet and John, I almost fell asleep at the wheel and ended up listeniong to Chris Moyles. Actually he's pretty good but I am just ready for that Radio 2 moment. Is it called middle-age????

    Come on you Saints.

I confess I got a bit teary listening to El Tel's announcement this morning - it can't have been easy for him at all. But, huge congrats to you on taking over the breakfast show - luckily I'll still be able to listen to you!

I wish oh wish that Richard Allinson would do the drivetime show - he's excellent and is wasted on 'filling' in, as is Johnny Walker.

    Oh well ...

Fantastic news Chris, well done mate!!

I'll miss you on drivetime though and more effort will have to be made to listen to the radio on a morning but it can be done. It will be good to have you back on the morning show! Wish we could get you back on telly on a Friday night too!

While we're suggesting presenters for drivetime - how about Vernon Kay? Liking the idea of Mr O'Leary too!!

While I shall miss Terry very much I am looking forward to hearing you when you take over & yes I'm sure he will be a tough act to follow I have every confidence in you & your abilities, so let me just wish Terry all the best & you good luck although I'm sure you won't need it

I'm sad and glad all at the same time. I think I'll miss the Janet and John stories most - perhaps Sir Tel could contribute a weekly spot - how ironic.

I like the idea of a 7.00am handover direct from Alex Lester. Best way to facilitate that is to move Sarah Kennedy to drive time - funny story about cats, twenty minutes reading out the Evening Standard, funny story about foreigners - with their amusing names! - job sorted. (Or possibly not).

Who ever thinks Lisa Tarbuck is good needs to up there medication as it obviously isnt working.Lisa Tarbuck has to be the worst person Ive heard on Radio 2 this year. She makes even Sarah Cox bearable to an extent and took over from Sarah Kennedy in the slot of most disliked (Hate is a strong word)Instantly turned off and didnt go anywhere near Radio 2 on Saturday Morning's when JR was away.

Who ever put LT on the radio should be ashamed of themselves.I would rather listen to Jimmy Tarbuck on the raio in his present state and I Yes I do know he is sadly deceased.

For the people that will turn off when Chris leaves then there will be plenty of people will turn on to Mayo.

Danny Baker is on ´óÏó´«Ã½ London 3-5pm which is how I usually avoid Steve Wright. The only person that stood in for JR on his 3 month break tha was really funny and he should have done the whole 3 months in my book.Danny Baker would be good on radio 2 but then you wouldnt get the kind of callers that listen to ´óÏó´«Ã½ London phoning in:-),Luckily I only listen to his show and then Im off again back to radio 2.Get Candyman on radio 2 and I'd never have to go near ´óÏó´«Ã½ London again :-)

Radio 2 even makes Zoe Ball good as I do like listening to her show as well but couldnt stand her on radio 1.

    Congratualtions Chris.

Sad to hear that Terry is going but all good things have to end sometime, and at least it is of his choosing. Really looking forward to hearing you in the morning. You really raised the bar at drivetime after taking over from Johnny Walker. I know you will do the same at breakfast.

I hope that Simon Mayo does get to take your drivetime slot. I am a fan of his and always enjoyed him on Radio 1 and on Five Live.

We'll all miss Sir Tel, but as a housewife of a certain age I can't think of a better DJ to pass this gig to. Can't wait to hear Master Evans in the morning again. A big congrats to him.
