So, hi there everyone, arrived in Blackpool ready for tonight's All Request Friday live from the Tower this morning at 2.50 am after....

Chris Evans | 11:26 UK time, Friday, 4 September 2009

...travelling through the night on gloriously clear roads.

Pulled up at the hotel, went to open the car door and the damn thing was nearly ripped from its hinges. Wind like you wouldn't believe! I used to come to Blackpool almost every year with Mum and Dad for our hols but I have never witnessed wind like that before.

After checking in, I headed up to my room where there was a note waiting for me on the bed: "Tower closed today due to unsafe weather conditions but should be alright for tomorrow."

"Uhmm..." I thought, "I wonder where all this wind is planning on going then?"

Three hotel room biscuits and a sip of water later, I had ceased to worry about that or anything else and was now asleep, dead to the world.

And so to this morning, I woke up at just before eight to the sound of the continuing wrath of the elements - except if anything, il fait du vent plus tard, it was an even stronger wind that was now lashing the promenade.

chris-blackpool.jpg

The phone rang, "the Tower is closed and will be all day, you need to get back to London in time for tonight's show, you'd better leave now !"

And so it is blog fans that I regale you with these words from the M6. As I write we are hot footing it back to the studio. I stopped briefly at a nice man's shop to buy Sal some rock -

chris-rock.jpg

The rest of the scheduled events - fingers crossed - should be unaffected, but our trip up the Tower is for another day.

Right where's my Travel Scrabble ?

Here's to M6 being clear and the joy of the TOLL.

  • Comment number 20.

For once in ages I managed to sign in on the first attempt! Thats a miracle in itself! I was looking forward to the broadcast from the top of the tower - okay so it wasn't like I was going to be there too lol. I'd be in the car on the way to Milton Keynes to see my best bud and go to the cinema (A certain cinema franchise isn't showing 500 days of summer in my local! So I have to go to MK but my friend is there so it balances out)

My request would be I Wanna Hold Your Hand by The Beatles or Sway by Michael Buble (My friend loves this song!! We had it on rather loud on the way to Nottinghamshire on BH Monday)

  • Comment number 21.

Poor Christoph, It's a long way to go for a few hours kip in a hotel and a stick of rock - still never mind you will get to see Noah early than you thought.

Safe journey back to the studio

    AliB
    xx

  • Comment number 22.

Chris, on the light of your recent round trip, can I change my ARF to

"Get right back to where we started from" by Maxine Nightingale?!"

    Keep smiling,

    A x

PS Hannipants, we danced the cha-cha to Michael Buble's "Sway" for the first dance at our wedding!

  • Comment number 23.

Soz,meant in the light, not on the light! That would be most uncomfortable!

  • Comment number 24.

  • Comment number 25.

Now here`s the thing - The fragrant Kate Humble and The Frankincense Trail - brilliant.

Now, in a hoolie that is the best time to broadcast from a tower, kill-joys! I love the elements, always keep a kite close by.

Now a car park night mare. The man said, "it`s fine..." to leave our car in the field. Back from the walk we find the car surounded by a dozen cows and the biggest bull you`ve ever seen! They didn`t look happy! Now we had to get ourselves and the dog back in the car...

Ah JEAYzus Christoff Lambie Pie what a NAUSE.

Il fait du vent? Alors il fait du Hurricane Zanussi a Wigan. Sacre ruddy bleu.

Still. Look on the bright side. At least yous managed to clear the M58 turn-off before Renee's knickers blew off the line, or yous'd be the one staggerin' down the hard shoulder in a state a disorientation with said Sloggis round the mazzard. Luckily it was the chap in the churchyard intercepted 'em, I think 'e's ok now although 'e's still in a state a shock, as are the neighbours who witnessed 'im climbin' out the open grave 'e fell into.

And so can I revise my choice for ARF.

    Earth, Wind and Fire, September.

I'd say Get Back but we're all a bit Beatlesed out.

  • Comment number 28.

And pull yer pants up, yous awful gobdaw. You've nearly put Renee in hospital.

    Chris,

What a shame - and poor Blackpool! Everyone who had tickets to attend tonight will be gutted. However, it will be lovely for you to be home early tonight!

I still love Blackpool, even though she's a wee bit faded round the edges. My lovely mum always wanted to go, but never got around to it. When she died, I kept a wee box of her ashes, and decided to scatter them in Blackpool. My husband, wee girl (at the time) and I went there and I remember thinking "I have never experienced anything like this" - the wind was incredible, I really did think MsS would be blown off her feet! However, we found a wee secluded spot and I tipped my mum's ashes over the sea wall ....... and they blew straight back over and landed all over me! Hey Ho, Mum ... I tried my best!

Blackpool wind - one fine December day we headed off en masse for a work's trip out to the Tower. When we arrived it was so windy we held onto our 2 little men for all it was worth as it was so windy littlest man in particular could not stand up.

Then inside the play area in the Tower part of the roof blew off, we did have some fun that day though! We are going again this December to the Tower for the day and to watch the Circus pantomime. Can't wait!

ChrissieS - love the story about your mum, am sure she laughed her socks off when that happened!

    Ah, Rips..years of practice!

I used to be a dept mgr of a well known high st store at one of their flagship stores..we were a `young` management team and enjoyed going out and having fun on a Sat night in particular...come the Sunday, if any of us were working we used to take it in turns to go and have a kip in the first aid room to `sleep it off`..as long as we were pageable it was ok! Not sure if any of the other staff cottoned on but we got away with it anyway. How bad is that?! But hey ho.. things you do in the flush of youth eh?!

Now of course, being a grown up respectacle manager i wouldnt dream of sneaking off and doing it now...my staff are aware tomorrow that they have to whisper and bring coffee!Honesty is the best policy n`all that!

Scooby: a couple of years ago, one of our directors came into work the morning after a fairly hefty session the night before. In short, he was wrecked. The other directors were out for the day, and at lunchtime me and my colleague put on the answering machine, locked up the office and went out for an hour and a half (as was agreed). Came back to find said director sound asleep on the reception settee - he slept for the entire afternoon, and woke up in time to go home! I have to say that was a one-off, but we never let him forget about it!

Just on the subject of the fax machines, how expensive they were, how the Xerox machines usedta be the size of a VW Beetle; I well remember when the DDF Eric was furnished with a fax machine by the RFU, in order to put together the then daring concept of a League system within the Rugby Union. Marvellous, I thought, was highly entertained by his cack-handed initial efforts to negotiate this cutting-edge technology.

Some time later he upgraded it and passed the said machine on to me. This was in the days of CLP on the R1 Breakfast show.

And the rest, CLP, is history.

Can I now just take the opportunity to apologize profusely for the sound batterin' you endured for the following years on the receivin' end of it.

I am contrite. Mind you what a wheeze.
