All Hail The Twitmeister

Chris Evans | 11:30 UK time, Friday, 5 February 2010

Sir Tel is on Twitter. Don't know how but there you are: @Terry_wogan. That's where he is. He is yet to tweet but that is his official account name.

@simonmayo and I already tweet all the time.

@whisperingbob dips his toe into the pool now and again. Our wives don't understand, but finally it's what us boys have been waiting for. The day has come when we don't have to talk about sport, in order to have a conversation during daylight hours.

The limited character thing - 140 characters max, is also a brilliant tool to produce writing that is more concise. I've lost count of the number of times I have run out of characters, gone back and ended up saying more with less.

Let's try it with the above paragraph.

Limited character-140 max, brill for more concise writing. Lost count of times had to revise & ended up saying more with less !

And that's with 15 characters spare ! What could we do with those ?

How about. . . LOOK OUT WALES!

twitter - now i have an account but i'm not really sure what to do with it!! FB I get completely and love it. This blog took me a while to take the plunge but now it's fab!! online shopping - piece of cake!! but twitter - still not sure how it works if i'm honest!! is it better if you put it on your phone maybe??

oh well, might get there one day!!

Hi Chris, not sure I get the whole twitter thing. Your Twitter version just looks like the notes you make during a lecture, then fill out to make more interesting and readable.

Mind you, what would I know, being a founder member of Luddites Anonymous who seldom uses one word when ten will do.

Still loving the show, the bits I hear anyway.

    Morning all

Firstly can I just add my congratulations to Alib from the last blog. I'm sure that you will make a difference and will be enriched by the experience. I hope you find a good project.

Apropos the Rugby - I must say 'COME ON ENGLAND', I hope that CLP will be a good luck charm...

    Christoff mon petit twitteur.

I'm very much afraid to say I've signed on to Le Twit, have managed me profile but I can only get so far tryin' to tweet before I lose me patience with it an' exit stage right. I know I'll enjoy it once I get the hang of it whereby I'm sure I'm not tweetin' the local vicar or The Samaritans; but for now I'm too stubborn to admit I'm simply a Bit Thick.

So for now I'll leave tweetin' to the tits. Mind you. If THEY can manage it, what with them ickle claws an' tricky letters an' all, or do the use the beaks... ah jayzus am ringin' me mate. 'E'll tell me what am doin' wrong.

CG, certainly, you can head up the Pedantic About Punctuation (PAP) division, and perhaps you could also become involved in the "Save Our Semicolon" campaign - otherwise known as "dot dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot", which I think is fitting in the circumstances. (Hope I got the dots and dashes the right way round).

    Over and out,

DtM - I have dipped my toe in the world of tweeting - still not convinced - you reply by hitting the reply button that appears when you hover over the tweet - I'm sure someone much more techie then me can tell you better.

Rips - thanks and i think its going to be okay - a bit cryptic I know but you will know what i mean :-)
oh - and I won't mention the axe you keep in your van ;-)

    Hi Chris,

I have a Twitter account - haven't a ruddy clue what to do with it! Have to say, how lovely was that wee boy, George, this morning? You were fantastic with him, just great, great radio.

Can I say to Tash: how are the plans coming along for Noah's first birthday on Wednesday? No doubt you will be putting more work into this, than you did for your wedding, am I right?! It's amazing that a year has gone past already. xx

And .... good luck to all the Rugby chaps!

BG - got our wedding album last night - I didn't look half bad - what went wrong in the last 6 months

I got told if I refer him and it results in a booking I get a free piccie - so anyone want a good photographer - and can't already use dorset photo?

  • Comment number 14.

Oh YES, Chrissie!! The GD rang first thing, laffin' like a nutter at wee Georgie as she hurtled into work. How sweet was HE. And Chris was fab with 'im.

and Baggy - I bet it was lovely to look back and remember the day? I love wedding photos - my own are 20 years old this April, and the "fashions" look really dated, but they still make me smile!!

  • Comment number 17.

CG - I wish i could remember the day, if it wasnt for the paper, the ring and the photgraphic proof it might never of happened

  • Comment number 18.

    Afternoon Chris,

I have a Twitter account, but have only ever twittered once. I follow you though and a few other famous people. I don't know about others but I feel like a bit of a stalker reading tweets - perhaps it's just me. I will have to add the great Sir Tel to my list though.

Thank you to everyone (Rips, debs, CG, sbp, Clodagh, Thunder, dreamer, Chrissie, JG, TF, Beez, PlaneJanet, Gail, BG, mtd) for your very kind words about my plans and me - this blog is a wonderful place and you are all truly a great bunch of very supportive people.

    Lots of love
    AliB
    xx

  • Comment number 19.

Baggy - that's why I always think it is very sad when people don't have a photographer at their weddings and think "oh, I'll just get copies of everyone's photos". I'd economise on loads of other things to get a proper photographer there - the photos are what you remember it all from after all (apart from the obvious fact that you have a husband/wife, of course!). My brother and sister in law didn't have one and there isn't one of them both looking in the same direction!! 10 years on and she is still saying "I wish we'd had proper photos!".

(DorsetPhoto - permission to use the above in any marketing you wish!)

  • Comment number 20.

CG - we used a local guy who does photos on the side as a real job and me friends filmed it for me (they are professional camera guys) and it meant we have a great record of the day and it didn't cost us the earth.

  • Comment number 21.

Ah bless, Ali. But yes, I agree, I feel hideously uncomfortable with it for the same reason. Am the same with Facecloth. So am goin' to call me little stalker mate shortly, if yous get me drift, hahahaha, 'e'll tell me how to do it proper, like.

May as well make a proper job of it if am goin' to lurk in the cupboards.

I have a twitter account, but mainly I just use it to read all the stuff people are doing rather than actually sending anything!

Also, as the Twitter website is blocked at work, I have to use a gadgety thing on i-g00gle, which is not as straightforward.

Anyhow, statrted following all the tweets from the folk at the F1 testing and Nascar Daytona this week, and the whole thing got overloaded!

The one thing the gadget does well though is translate from Portuguese and Spanish!

AliB - great to read your news. Have a fantastic time, making such a difference to so many people. And don't worry about the straighteners, I'm sure you'll figure something out and if all else fails asking a passing elephant to flatten it for you ;-)

CG - thanks for that marketing material! I'm constantly amazed by the number of people who are prepared to spend a few hundred on a cake which will be eaten and forgotten (probably) very quickly, but won't fork out for the one thing that can help keep those memories fresh! Still, needs must...

    Happy Friday everyone!

DorsetP - any time!! as I have an aunt who makes the most A-MA-ZING cakes for weddings etc (and is not too expensive either!) I would have to say that a cake is important - but for me if push came to shove it would be photos every time!

if there was ever a fire in my house I have told Mr CG to save the photos before anything else (except maybe the kids!). And although I have succumbed to the digital camera, I do miss sitting and looking through albums. not the same sitting in front of a screen!!

    CG xx

  • Comment number 29.

Oh gosh, I just started watching the ice-hockey video at my desk. I got about 3 minutes in and had to stop it, as I thought that I was going to burst out laughing and also test my bladder!

If you're somewhere where you can watch and listen to it, and haven't already done so, do it now!!

  • Comment number 30.

CG - don't just look at them on the screen. Get them in a photobook, and then you get the best of both worlds! Comparatively, it's far cheaper now than it's ever been.

  • Comment number 31.

that video is a classic!! as well as the "Jonny inspirational speech" there is also a really good bit where CLP and Jonny end up in a sort of "bundle" together in the middle of the rink and everyone else just carries on playing!! hahaha! brill!!

    CG xx

  • Comment number 32.

but Dorset - i did a big one for my parents after our florida trip last year but that was for a present - took AGES to set it all out and put them all in the right pages!! Mind you I suppose it's no different to spending all that time putting them into albums. you could just choose the ones you really want to look at and not all the fuzzy ones? (think the penny has just dropped on that and am now very keen to sit here and sort out a load of photobooks!!!)

but I can't cos have just had text from Mr CG saying do I want to go and meet him for lunch!! So I bloomin think I will!!

    laters peeps!

    CG xx

  • Comment number 33.

Exactly CG - think of all that money we save now only getting the 'good ones' printed! And yes, you have to spend time sitting in front of the screen sorting it, but it's pretty easy generally. Some providers even sort and fill the photos automatically for you if you want them to.

    Enjoy lunch :-)

AliB - good luck and well done! Far braver than I could ever be...

I have a Twitter account - think I mentioned before that I only use it for stalking celebrities. I've finally become one of those people who will only feel validated when someone reasonbly famous admits to also liking Oat So Simple (Golden Syrup flavour). Still, don't suppose it'll be long before I get my first virtual restraining order.

To be honest with you though, 140 characters is quite a lot to fill when you work in IT....

  • Comment number 45.

    Afternoon,

Well, the A-Team van has delivered me safely back to the office...axe in tact (thank you Ms Beep).

Chris - I am a big fan of Twitter and now prefer it to Facebook, what with the games that seem to take over every page.
Twitter has also allowed me to (very briefly) converse with people like You, Simon Mayo, Richard Bacon and Will Carling.
Will is genuinely funny and has recently sent me a Kiwi shirt with the most amazing signatures on as a raffle prize for our rugby club.
All through Twitter and his big heart!

I hasten to add that I was already following these people and did not start following around your celebrity friends which it turns out that they are.
Do I protest too much ?!

This is probably not that funny but a few of you will appreciate it.
The first time that I tweeted Will was last year staying at The Celtic Manor Resort. Jason Leonard walked into the bar with some mates and (believe it or not) I didn't want to interrupt.
I tweeted Will "how do I approach J. Leonard without getting a punch in the face"
He replied "from behind or from the side, he won't see you" see genuinely funny!

The other point you make is completely valid.....imagine if I'd only had 140 characters here.
Would have saved you lot hours! Though, that does assume that you even bother to read my ramblings.

    It is official.

Thankfully, or not - your choice - the rumours that I had been abducted by aliens, then rejected on the basis that I was 'not a typical specimen' and dumped naked in the Australian outback where I have been living on a diet of wallaby poontang and scorpion's toenails, were greatly exaggerated. In fact. I'm thinking of suing 'Caravan Weekly' for libel, but that's another story.

    So, how you been?

Actually, I know. I've been what we in the trade call 'lurking'. Not quite sure why, I didn't decide at the stroke of midnight to not post for a month, it just sort of happened.

My friends over on Facecloth will know that I have basically spent the past month or so running. I stop sometimes, to eat and sleep and stuff, but it is mostly running. This is because the marathon that seemed such a good idea many months ago, something I went in for out of a stupid act of oneupmanship, is now only three months away. Heck, actually it is a bit less than three months.

A little while back I came to the conclusion that I had no chance. I'm fairly fit, but this started to look like a massive step too far. However, as the weeks have rolled by, I am starting to gain a little confidence, and I am now totally focused on doing this thing. If it kills me. Which it probably will. Actually, I hope it doesn't as I have booked a lovely holiday the day after it. And I'm married. And quite like living. And stuff.

Anyway, as you may remember, this is all about turning 40 this year, so even if I get past this small matter of 26 and a bit miles, there will be plenty more crises to come before my birthday.

    As my current favourite band in the world ever once sang;

Wake me up when September ends.

    Much peace and lovely stuff

    Greetings from ChezNicia...

Had a lovely slow not doing much kind of day today and off out for a meal with Cheryl (who else!) in a bit.
Terry on Twitter?! Good grief, how did he manage that? Maybe he thinks it stands for something - Terry Wogan Is Today Tweeting...something something...! I don't get twitter, still, and can't find time to for 2 blogs, fb and twitter anyway, as I have to do some work at some point!

    Is gud yes...

Debs - 6:51 your reputation is in tatters.

    Evening each

You talking about the rugby Chris? If so, my daughter-in-law will be cheering Ireland on tomorrow at a pub in Edinburgh while her husband and I are looking after the abandoned baby daughter. Only joking - she deserves some time away from feeding the little'un.

Back later when I've caught up. Can I open the bottle? Is the bar open?

Crack on my little highland warrior!

MC - I am currently preparing Lamb shanks and dauphinoise potatoes.....when I say prepared. Tesco's finest did most of that. I just whipped off the lid and stuck em in the oven.

JG - You leave my beer alone....literally!

I shall see the remainder of you lot in a couple of hours when I am as refreshed as a newt.
Unless Frost Nixon ain't no good then I'll see you sooner.

Matt my little runner bean. Was wonderin' how the heck you were. Well now. Yous are a better man than me, sweetheart. Last time I ran anywhere was in November when I got me scarf caught in the door a the Luas, nearly trottled meself an' got whiplash goin' round the roundabout at Rathfarnham.

Mind you. The Luas. What a wheeze. Oh in case yous are wonderin', it's the tram system round Dublin where they built it round said roundabout so they can't 'ave more than 2 carriages on that route. And the one with the overhead cables goin' across O'Connell Street which nearly garrotted half the floats in the Paddys Day parade. The one whose slogan is Watch Out For The Luas.... Because It Can't Watch Out For You.

And where, when I was sat sittin' mindin' me own business as it got full, standin' room only, the carriage jolted as it set off, an' the chap at the front fell over, takin' everybody down like a row a dominoes, 'e shot up an' hollered, "STRIKE!!"

    Marvellous.

Anyway watch yourself, if you're strugglin' wit the motivation, I can always come down there an' do me Wile E. Coyote to your Road Runner. You know, with me Acne Leg Muscle Vitamins an' me Elast-O-Matic catapult. Let me know.

Well now. Slainte. Am on the red wine that the brother-outlaw fetches back from bandito country in Southern Spain, an' beetroot crisps. Nice. Suits its purpose but tastes like battery acid an' gives yous a tongue like a Gecko with Swamp Fever.

    Speak shortly. Well, maybe not..

So, where are you? My Dad's place is also 50/50 - Offa's runs through his garden.

    Enjoy, my friend.

M - Back in da house.

have finally crashed onto the sofa, replaced the lapdog with the laptop and am steadily working my way down a very nice bottle of Jacobs Creek (other reds are available) I do have a bottle of Chards in the cupboard but it gives me a headache (I need to be semi-alert in the morning!) so if anyone wants a glass just shout ;)
hope everyone else is having a relaxing evening

MC. Mind them roses, hun. Earwigs. If there's one thing worse than findin' an earwig in your butty, it's findin' HALF an earwig. Ew.

Rips. Who's this Daphne now. An' why can't she do 'er own ruddy potatoes, cheeky mare.
