its not a great time for a lot of people I know at the moment and I managed to quite badly be out of order yesterday - and I haven't had a chance to make it up to them yet and I feel really bad about the whole situation.

Baggy: sounds like you are really beating yourself up over something. Obviously, I don't know the particulars, but I would say to you that all you can do is apologise - let them know it is sincere - and then try to "put it to bed". You can't undo what has been done (I've been there a million times) but please try not to be too hard on yourself. We all get it wrong sometimes. Usually our loved ones understand.

As to the other, and tell me to go away if I'm stepping out of line, if its someone you know, they'll understand it was out of character. When you get chance to explain things, hopefully you'll feel much better and the air will be cleared. It's the mulling over and worrying about situations which is horrible. It seems Dads aren't the only ones who have the monopoly over worrying!

Chrissie- I would love to have been a fly on the wall when you said that!

I'd adopt the same tactics as I used to with my teenagers- let things get really stinky and smelly. Leave a basin full of dirty mugs, no milk and no sugar etc. When they want a drink- they have to wash up their own mug.

Baggy - know just what you mean. I have to empty the dishwasher at work every morning as no one else does and did anyone put their dirty stuff back in? No. So, I found myself filling it in the evening. Then I put a sign up. Then a bigger sign. Then one that went along the lines of "Glad I don't live in your house. I am not your mother". Seems to have done the trick!

Beez - love that expression but was rather astounded when my then 4 year old god son used it to his father!! Nearly died with laughter!!

Glad you and Jonny didn't break anything yesterday and as has been suggested a nice hot bath should do you the world of good.

Max has been put on the gifted and talented register for three of his subjects so we are over the moon.
A lot of it is do with the teachers he has this year.
I know that I'm biased and am sure that Boleyn will back me up on this.
But a good teacher is worth their weight in gold and they really should get more credit.

As for the gifted and talented register. Had this been around when I was at school, I would have been a dead cert for:

Cleaning the black board
Buying and selling anything
Snoggin'

Hi, I watched the Terry Pratchett lecture the other night. I've never even tried to get into his books, although I know many who are fans, but I was very interested in how he would make his case.

What overwhelmed me was they way one man's eloquent, poignant and controversial thoughts, even when spoken by another (the excellent Tony Robinson - he got it exactly right) could mesmorise his audience for so long. More to the point - that he had Boleynman and myself totally silenced and jaw droppingly in awe of his way with words, especially his use of humour.


In these days of x factor-type audiences whooping and screaming if anyone so much as opens their mouth (anyone watching "Pop Star to Opera Star? I LOVE the programme but the audience drives us nuts), it was a reminder of the power of the pen and the well-chosen word. The room was silent but for a few chuckles.

Whether or not you agree with what was said, the way it was said (and delivery), was faultless. And yes, a few tissues to hand may be a good idea (the bit about his Dad got me as it reminded me of mine), but no hysterical blubbing, save that for X factor!

Chrissie, didn't realise you were taking in laundry - I'll pay youre fare and throw in a packed lunch if you'll come and do mine.

i have read terry books for ages. i also have a few of the audio books that tony robinson reads but they are the abridged versions,the unabridged ones are read by someone else.
your synopsis ((sp) off to check the dictonary)of the program was wonderful
terry does write very well and so much better than other people who are marketed to the ends of the earth.

Howaya chaps. Am finally back, in one piece an' wit me marbles in place; and am most relieved Podge & Rodge On Ice are too, albeit registerin' code red on the Stiff-O-Meter.

Rips, don't sell yourself short, my friend. I agree about the value of a good teacher; you only had to hear Chris with Mister Hildich for affirmation of that. But for a child to be happy at school and to thrive, as opposed to being driven, he has to be secure and happy at home. And I don't need to know your family to see that's the case. This is why, primarily, I love this blog. Because there are so many of you who are what I aspire to be, proud, loving, accepting and inspirational parents. And grandparents, Thunder. It's vital, and key to a healthy society in my view.

Now then. I say am finally back; I've actually done the Knutsford trip again today. Owing to the fact I left me lovely cashmere scarf in Bazs car, and woke up to a nice text this morning to the effect that 'Guess what. It's still slushy here, wheels of the Range Rover spinnin' like mad; and what do yoy think got us right outa trouble. Your scarf. You didn't want it back did you?'

Now then you might think 'e's kiddin; but this is the psycho that is Baz, an' in fairness, he's still waitin' on an opportunity to retaliate for the destruction of 'is new map of Holland. In short, a couple years back, I had to take rather a lot of stuff over to Ireland, and therefore I had to take the van, leavin' my car at Baz's. Naturally, Baz was delighted and immediately began windin' me up with texts such as 'Have I done a bad thing, lending your car to Joe?' (Joe being the local alcoholic), and 'That cheeky b****rd Matt has taken your car to Paris..' etc. Now, I have to say that I play along with this nonsense because Baz is only happy when he thinks I'm vexed with him. He hates me being too relaxed and comfortable, see; and so I let him think I'm very cross, or he'll continue to look for something until he really does.

Are you with me.. Anyway. Back I land a week or so later; and, indeed, the car is not quite in the place I left it, but hey, I'm thinkin', he's probably used it. That's fine. Until I'm drivin' off in the bright sunshine and pull down the sun visor. And down drops a map of Holland. Oh hahaha, thinks I. The sun was very bright, though, so I reached over to the glove-box to get me sunglasses... and there is a passport. Baz's passport. Hmmmmm...... Not even Baz would leave his passport with ME, and he was due to go to Spain at the end of that week. (Not that he EVER knows where his passport is, like; his missus is driven to apoplexy before practically every trip with 'im.) So I pull over. 'Right Bazzer.' went the text. 'Who exactly took my car to Amsterdam, and tell me the truth or the passport gets it.'

So after a lot of argy-bargy, I refused to turn back and arrived home with the passport and 'is map. It was a lovely brand-new map, all sorts of useful information on it, marvellous. And just right for makin' paper dollies. You know the ones, the ones you used to make at school with a long concertina of paper. So snip, snip, snip; I haven't had such a good time since Manchester Poly and the Industrial Design module.

Naturally I finally did return the map an' passport (after makin' 'im sweat for a day or two), and what was really sweet was that Baz had his mates round that day, and had bin' showin' off about nickin' me car. So I handed it to him. 'Ere, Ray, look at this map,' says he, delighted, 'It shows all the different...' and the paper dollies drop down. Everybody fell about laffin', but livid, 'e was. Nearly put 'im in hospital.

Happy days. Actually it didn't end there. The next day I found a piece of map on the floor so I shoved it in a brown envelope and addressed it to Baz with newspaper letters an' a demand for a bonus.

So am lucky it was the missus who found me scarf. Or it would be catchin' squirrels by now.

And what make the dog doo doo d'oh worse is our route to the boys junior school is along a old railway path that is used by dog owners and I spend all the time watching the floor and telling the kids to look out.

This was totally unavoidable - exactly in the spot I put my foot as I get out of the car! Still grrrr!

BG Having heard the first 5 mins of the Pratchett lecture I would say that if you enjoyed it, you might like the books too. Although they look like fantasy, and true, there are dragons and vampires and werewolves, they are really very sharp satirical stories

I watched the Dimbleby Lecture the other night, thought Tony Robinson was excellent and Terry's writing was wonderful. Alzheimers is in my family and listened to the statistics on the News about NHS spending on people with Dementia with great sadness. It's an illness which has little government support, although Alzheimers Scotland do a wonderful job up here, as I'm sure the English organisation do as well.

JG: What a sad situation you're in. I worked for many years with people with Dementia and their families and I think it's so hard for families to cope with, an awful illness. All you can do is hold on to the memories.

CSN: Stepdaughter is 22 and stepson is 21, I've known them since they were 3 and 4. Even though their dad is now with someone else, they are so loving to me and the rest of the family. We all love them dearly.

No - not fb - watching silent witness - agree JG not good at all. Not seen video yet - will watch in a bit - could do with a laugh tonight!!!
