Stephen Merchant Of Clever

Chris Evans | 10:38 UK time, Friday, 4 March 2011

A joy to have SM on the show today. Could talk to him forever. George Michael is coming in this afternoon to pre record a chat for Monday. You couldn't have two more different characters and topics of conversation really could you ?

One down, one to go. Throw me a rope, I'm going in. And yes I will ask all the big questions (er. . . I think)

Have a great weekend People Of The Blog.

    Morning Chris

I only hope for your sake Yog turns up - he stood Mr Mayo up not so long ago. Good luck, and don't be shy to ask "those" questions - what's the worst that can happen?!?

Enjoyed what I heard of Stephen (with a ph) Merchant this morning. A very very clever man - I'd love to have a smidge of his writing talent.

Alone in the office today - currently enjoying the new Bob Geldof album and counting down the minutes to 5pm.

    Happy Friday!

    Morning CLP and everyone!

Got the day off and just popped in here before things get busy, only to find CLP here on his own...

Loved SM this morning and now listening to Leyla on Ken's show, it'll be a struggle to get out of here on time.

Love and hugs to everyone, I don't blog often these days but I do pop in and lurk, like so many others.

Have a lovely weekend - mine started at 6.30 this morning!
    Cheers
    Ann xxx :-)

    Morning CLP (and ladies)

can I say I'm reading fruitcake and have got to the bit where he had the sat show on R2, thats when I first started to really like you and we first spoke (I had something to celebrate and called you and spoke to you live on air), but funillily enough that didn't make the book :-)

    Big Chief CLP,

I dare you, nay double-dare you, to ask his opinion on Frankie Boyle's sketches of George - is he up for the critics as well as the fame??

    DtM

    Less seriously though, HAPPY FRIDAY everyone . . . . !!!!!!!

Hi Chris: thank you for today's show - an absolute belter! Stephen Merchant is so clever, so quick-thinking, and seems to be such a nice guy. I loved how he answered some of the questions you are going to put to Mr Michael!

Annie: hiya, nice to see you.

Cheryl: have been reading about your healthy eating - I am seriously considering adopting some of it. Especially, the suggestion from Gingembre that we should have fish & chips once a week to stay healthy!

    Hello CLP & Everyone.

The first time I watched The Office which was co-written by Stephen Merchant I didn't get it at all and wondered why it was supposed to be funny. The second time I understood that is exactly what life was like when I worked in an office and I thought it was very funny. He's very clever.

Chris-you have to say to George "Listen George, you gotta have faith, I'm your man" and ask him those questions. And please advise George to get a chauffeur, someone like Marky Mark.

    Off to the shops>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

PS Another springlike day here in Wirral!

Chrissie - if you need any tips, feel free to email me. I'm deadly serious about this nutritionist malarkey so want to know if my tips and ideas work! lol

Annie - drop by more often rather than lurk! And that goes for all you other lurkers out there ....! ;-)

Just went for a walk out to reception as I'm stiffening up a bit after yoga.

    Is it home time yet!?!?

Greetings CLP, Gree... tings CLP & ALL...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

CLP - Yes The Merchant most funny... sure wouldn't 'ave trouble shifting the merchadise with 'im on board the merchant ship of comedy!!!!!!!!!

As for The Micheal.... A don't like 'im after 'e took the micheal with me literally!!!!!!!
A remember waiting outside R2 when 'e was on The Drivetime Gig with yer CLP... A wanted 'im ter sign 'is album, that's my album, that 'ave 'ad for over ten years... And after standing in the freezing cold for the best part of 2 'ours 'e called the 10 of us outside R2 'all e-bay merchants!!!!'

From that moment on i've never played 'is album since... as a felt VERY offended... me e-bay... not me!!!!!!
In fact ave never ever traded on e-bay ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If The Micheal 'ad singed that album a would 'ave forgave 'im for 'is toilet trouble & put the album at the top of me CD collection & NEVER sold it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shaemr eally as a ALWAYS remember watching The Micheal doing a ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sessions Gig on tv for The Beeb.... And it was amazing... 'is voice just amazing live!!!!!!!!

Suppose The Micheal could ave been 'aving an off day when 'e called me an e-bay merchant... But 'e seems ter 'ave many off days (not singing wise) (it's when 'e ain't singing 'e seems ter get inter trouble)... And the way 'e said it to us smiling & with sarcasim.... A lesson for all celebs that it's all part of the job... It comes with the MEGA wages & the fame that yer fans will want yer 'graph!!!!!!!

A lesson a will remember for sure if ever a became famous (not that ave got enough talent for that ter 'appen) BUT... A lesson that will stay with me!!!!!!!!

Of course if say yer were pumping at the gym or running on the treadmill.... And some idiot stuck an 'graph book under yer nose with me sweat dripping onter it... then a wouldn't sign but i'd politely say with a smile in 'alf an 'our when ave finished i'll sign for you... But when yerv just come out of R2 after doing an interview.... Course i'd sign & pose for photos to make me fans 'appy.... After all they pay my wages & without them i'd be NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

INDEED right now a am NOTHING.... In fact if someone could sell a Bingo Star blog on e-bay..... A for one would be MIGHTY proud thatta Bingo Star Blog could actually getta sale on e-bay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My message ter The Micheal.... stop taking The Micheal!!!!!!!!!!!

    Bye!

  • Comment number 10.

    Morning all

Have sent the prize winning GD to school this morning for her first proper school photo! (not dressed as a ladybird today) Shame really.

Chrissie - I used to train at the gym with someone who said the same, not fish & chips necessarily but that your system needed a kick start at least once a week, so that you keep the metabolism high enough to continue the weight loss.

We will need to ask our trained nutritionist once she's qualified if that's true!

  • Comment number 11.

PS A also think it's a bit vain of The Micheal>>> Crashing 'is car inter Snappy Snaps photography shop in the middle of the DAMN IT night.... If a was a world famous singer.... I'd at least wait until they open in the morning.... And postion me car neatly outside not through the DAMN IT window!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am only trying ter offer good advice for yer 'ere Micky lad!!!!!!!

    Bye!

  • Comment number 12.

Bingo: just read your post, and I can well understand that you were offended, and hurt that George Michael could be so rude to you, and the other people waiting outside R2. Now, I wasn't there of course, and this is only a guess, but I would have thought that the chances of George Michael being able to make a rational decision then would have been very slim. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of GM's music. And, he was quite brilliant when he did Extras with Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, but thinking clearly has not been one of his biggest strengths for a very long time.

I absolutely understand that you are completely "off" him - it's fans like you he needs now, and hopefully this time he will have learned his lesson.

    Love, Chrissie xx

P.S. Bingo, when you ARE famous one day, I'll be very proud to tell people that you are a friend of mine, and a great guy!

  • Comment number 13.

    LOL Andy!

I don't believe in the word "diet". My mantra is everything in moderation and being sensible.

Lost another 2lb this morning - so that's 9lb in total now so must be doing something right!

  • Comment number 14.

Andy: hiya - I did mean to say how lovely that was that your daughter won first prize for her outfit! And, yes, although I was saying that a wee bit tongue in cheek about the fish & chips, I have been told this also. What Gingembre said is true, you've got to keep the body well fuelled and functioning properly.

    C xx

  • Comment number 15.

Just thinking about Gingembre's comment about having a day when you eat the 'naughtier' foods ....... when the divine Gary Barlow was on CLP's show recently he was talking about how he'd lost weight and that in order to stay motivated he used to have a day off on a Saturday and would eat whatever he wanted. Over time he found that he wanted to eat the 'bad stuff' less and less but still ate it on just one day. It's a good theory and it certainly works for him.

Now, if I could just find my motivation and mojo I'd do exactly the same - I know I had them once but I can't remember where I put them!!

Chrissie - yes, the flat has now been cleaned to within an inch of its life and woe betide anyone who puts a thing out of place over the next two days! Normal service will resume at 4pm on Sunday when the guests have gone!

    jillygoat x

    Good luck tomorrow Mary!

Well, the sun eventually came out and I got to use my new pegs.

Had a lovely chat with a friend this morning and we were lamenting the death of the FNWC. Will anyone be here tonight I ask myself? Don't know I answer myself. Would be good though, I said.

Back again after the busy-ness: GP/hairdressers = most of the day?!

Thanks for the 'hellos' folks, thats given me a lovely little glow that's got nothing to do with hormones or a cheeky chards, yet :-)

Deevs, here's another Annie Apple for you to advise - GP gave me a firm scolding earlier: "deal with the things you *can* deal with, like your weight and fitness..." wise words indeed, ouch. If jillygoat and I can locate our mojos, can we join bAnnieG as your guineapigs?? Over the years I've tried so many diets and eating plans and I always revert back to my old (bad) habits... I heard Gary B talking about his day off and that did seem to work for him, I guess that's the key: make sustainable changes. See I can write it down, next step is to do it.

Anyway, enough of that for now: it's Friday, the sun's still shining and I've got a new hat that will flatten the lovely hairdo, ah well!

Love to all and gallons of calamine to KandKs.

    Evening Allstars,

From what I've seen and read about George Michaels and speaking as a large fan (not obese, just large). I'm sure he'll be up for the toughest questions and will be the first to deride his actions and errors of late.
He's incredibly bright and wonderfully eloquent and is only going to disappointed if you don't go for it!
Why's he coming to you, eh? He knows he'll get a fair hearing and then some.
Good luck, I can't wait to hear it.
The goggle eyed freak (as Ricky Gervais - affectionately - calls him, is at least the equal to his writing Partner if not the better. If any of you need some nailed on quality comedy for a long trip. Download their podcasts. These broadcasts would nought without the twisted musings of K. Pilkington, but the real gold comes from Stephen Merchants dry asides and interruptions. They are properly funny. Oh, and very rude!

Another week whizzes by with no chance to read the blog and catch up, so I'll just say Hi to all and hope they you are all well.

Right, caught up. Busy on here tonight, that makes a refreshing change.

Tonight in the toedipper house, we have eggs on toast - fried with a very runny middle (as long as I don't break it on the way into the pan.....).

Love fish and chips (had them on Monday this week). yuk to the salt and vinegar though, tommy k for me.

Glass of a very nice cabernet/merlot on the go at the moment (special offer at elh - 3 for 12 squid - better than buy 2 get one free). We bought loads a couple of weeks ago when I got a voucher for triple points - roll on the next elh holiday......

mtd - at the Anstruther fish restaurant (which, btw, is the best in Scotland) not only do we get salt and vinegar, but we get a slice of lemon. Excellent.

I have to say don't really like eggs unless they're in a cake!!

K, you tuck yourself up if you need to, poorly thing

JG, enjoy your outing with Finlay, Haven't "seen" MC for ages, hope she's ok

Mtd, was thinking of you today - have been chatting about cruise holidays. One of my ladies at work - 83 years young - has just flown off to Ecuador for a cruise including a trip to the Galapagos!

My weekend will be mostly shopping and washing and cleaning.............

Sezza, I did my cleaning, washing and shopping today. Was shattered. I really need to win the Lottery so I can employ a housekeeper.

    Hi Sezza

I am very jealous of your lady, that one is definitely on the list of future cruises (when funds allow as those ones aren't cheap). I hope she has a wonderful time.

My weekend consists (as usual) of washing and cleaning - shopping is already done.

Mtd, in a bizarre twist, she's going as a companion to her niece! We have pointed out that it is usually nieces who accompany their maiden Aunts!!

I always try to get organised so i don't have to spend the weekend doing chore but there's always something

We are going to Mum and Dad's for lunch on Sunday so that's something good

Have been having email conversations with my brother about his wife's birthday present - he's absolutely rubbish at suggesting anything.

He's just told me they're going to London for the weekend and he's going to Covent Garden, to an art shop, because he wants to buy a particular pencil. Honest to god.......

    Hiya Troops:

Annie, saw your comment earlier today regarding the FNWC, so thought I would make the effort to join in. I am here, with a CUP OF TEA, and that's the truth!

I have to work tomorrow - paperwork overload, and I have to get it under control.

kks: so sorry to hear about your chicken pox. I did have it, as a child, so have no recollection of it. MrS got it from our daughter about 15 years ago. I would say to you: don't try to fight it, listen to your body and if you need your bed, then embrace it! And, try not to scratch - easier said than done!

Lovely to see so many people here tonight - I'm hoping Maween will make an appearance!

Ah bless you Chrissie. So nice to see you here on a Friday night. But, really, a cup of tea????? What are you like?

What time will you be up in the morning? I'll give you a passing thought about 8 o'clock, when I'm back in bed with my tea and toast.

Hi Annie: I know, from the sublime to the ridiculous - tea on a Friday night! I would like to be in the office for 10am and will work until it's all finished, probably 5pm or so, so it's full shift. I'll get up about 7.30, so that's a bit of a long lie!

JG: sorry I missed you! xx
