Slugs, One Of The Stars Of Life's Show - Who Knew ?

Chris Evans | 11:21 UK time, Wednesday, 2 March 2011

With thousands of teeth, although the jury's out as to how many exactly, just the one huge big foot and the ability to self amputate - should it need to do so whilst under attack, I think the slug has worked out quite a little act for itself, don't you?

Discoveries like this are what make the three hours I'm on the radio fly by every morning. I only hope if it feels the same on your side of the speaker. Please - don't tell me if it doesn't. Currently sticking my fingers in my ears and humming loudly just in case.

    Hello CLP & Everyone.

CLP -Your three hours in the mornin g makes us feel anything but sluggish, it gets us moving.

Oh no! You've just reminded me that the slugs will soon be arriving in the garden, that's one thing I like about the winter, no slugs on the path.

PS Springlike day here in Wirral!

Good morning CLP, and everyone else from a cloudy but dry and cold Ayrshire.

I absolutely hate slugs, sometimes when I am picking up the horses buckets or whatever, I accidentally touch one and it is just the most horrible thing!!, they are disgusting.

Hope everyone is having a good day so far.

    Well, I dont believe it!!!

I was having a chat with Bids last night about slug pellets!

I try to find alternative methods of removing the annoying little creatures, I know they are partial to a drop of beer.

Is there anything more sickening than standing on a snail?? That awful crunch sound. Ewwww!

Well, I am sitting here surrounded in holiday brochures. It is now down to two factors.

The first is, how many of us?? It seems that if we go to the right place then it will be a family holiday, which I would love. They dont always want to be with the 'olds' when they reach a certain age.

The second is.... getting the time off work!!! I may have to work on that one :(

    I know, I know!!!

Enjoy your holiday Bingo, it sounds like a wonderful time ahead for you.

    Blue skies here now.

A slug is a bug, and I wouldn't fancy one in my rug, with all those teeth! There'd be no snug or no rug! Could it be, that maybe, all that slime comes from not brushing all those teeth that they have and the saliva from nashing through all those rugs, that I've just been rambling on about. It's just a thought. That's all, just a funny thought. Thanks Chris for setting them off!

  • Comment number 9.

Hi Chris: believe me, listening to you from 6.45 - 8.15 in the weekday mornings is what makes me move into action, and get into work with a smile on my face! I loved the chat from Moira this morning about her spider-catcher!

Maddy/Gail: I hate slugs too. I hate having to "get rid" of them, but they won't take no for an answer, and insist on coming into the house!

Bingo: sounds like your girlfriend is a little firey! And, I did mean to say yesterday, well done on the new house, and I hope your holiday is fab!

    Hi CLP and team

Now I have gone and got a grown up job I dont have as much time to listen to you as I would like but believe me the bits I hear I like!

Slugs - spawn of the deeevil along with frogs if you ask me - and its getting to that time of the year again.....

Just listening to a £5ers worth of the Buble from sainsbugs - just heard Lost and along with my trip to Glasgow, brought a beezeles related lump to my throat. However, I am powering through and reminising about the wonderful weekend we had almost a year ago in Glasgow.

All Bar one - all afternoon - The Lovely ChrissieS going back to my hotel for me to get my purse

Gail, Mary, Chrissie always ensuring the whole bunch of bloggers constantly had liquid refreshment

Meeting Hels amongst others for the first time

JTT singing his heart out at the karioke bar

    A Annie hug on Sunday

And drinking champagne with Beez on Sunday afternoon

What a weekend - oh yes, what a weekend :-)

Right off to find out what you lot have been up to....

    Afternoon all

Sorry Chris I'm with Debs & Chrissie - can't do with slugs, especially when they ravage my fresh cabbages and salad leave at the allotment.

They are clever tho, even when launched several gardens away by spade, they find their way back ;(

Beer traps are very effective in my experience, cheap sweet lager works best.

Deev's - glad Nic's first day is going well.

    Wotcha all..

Slugs. Now, I am not in the least squeamish and can do spiders, mice etc but slugs...urgh,urgh and triple urgh!

Picture the scene.. whilst still living at home I worked late regularly. To get to the front door of the house you had to walk along a narrow path between the front windows and the hedging at the side of the garden. I grew up on the countryside so no street lights for us..therefore this was a dark, damp and usually quick dash from the car to the door. One night, home about 12ish and stepped onto about 4 slugs who were seemingly having an innocent `tete a tete` in the middle of said path...stupid creatures. Oh, and i say about 4 cos, as some of you know, I am not the most `delicate` female around and they had had my full size 8`s land on them. My scream of horror and disgust woke the whole house up and i made my Dad come and clean them up and off my shoes for me..bless him!

Needless to say the `door walk` was completed using a torch every night after that..

oh, and I havent even mentioned me flapping my arms up and down in front of me to avoid walking face first into any spiders webs... an interesting sight i must have made!

Hope everyone is keeping their chins up as the saying goes...new jobs, holidays, all positives. And my love to anyone having a tough time.. i dont care who thinks thats too personal...I`m sending it so there!

    Afternoon All,

From a sunny but chilly Kent, today would be a good day for a walk by the sea!

Slugs and snails all have a purpose in life, bless 'em. MTF, what is just as bad as standing on a snail is listening to a blackbird or thrush beat the ***p out of it on the path!!

Deevs, Good to hear that Nic is enjoying his first day...phew indeed :)

Bingo, Congrats on the house and have a great holiday xx

csn, Hooray for romance. Bless Mr csn, he sounds like a keeper xx

Yesterday the two bosses were in, one came back today with another Director and then I had a visit from my old colleague. I bet now, no one will visit for weeks!

One task I've been asked to do is buy OS maps of the South East, stick them all together and then pinpoint all the churches (in one particular denomination) with ministers and also the churches that are growing!! That sounds like fun!! Still no two days are ever the same and for that I should be grateful.

Now if people would stop ringing me with urgent things to do, perhaps I can get on with the tasks in hand. Is it hometime yet??

Afternoon CLP and the rest, interesting slug talk this morning. I'm no gardener, but I remember my Dad's battles with the little blighters in his garden.

Another lovely sunny day here in the 'burgh, so I had coffee in the Botanic gardens, seeing as it's my day off (now I bet they could give you a tip or two on how to deal with slugs). I even sat outside in the sun! Ok so I kept my jacket and scarf on but hey it's the principle that matters! Still, it really felt like spring is here.

Hope everyone is having a good day

OK Ranty Pants being put on!!!

I have just been on the phone to a very well know phone supply company consisting of two letters to get them to sort out my paperless billing password, for work, as I can't for the life of me think what it is; and when I click that I can't remember the password it asks a very odd question that I am not sure of the answer too!

Three different people all of whom didn't have English as their first language and 20 minutes later, three lots of explaining the situation and my account number, telephone number, address etc they were just about to put me through to someone else when I ranted and raved and hung up....whoops!! My blood is still boiling now. I told them I wanted to pay them money not rob them blind so why is it so complicated!!!

The security question was my place of birth which I gave them and it wasn't correct according to their records! Is it me???? I don't think my birth certificate lies.

The last time I phoned a communications company and was passed around to many people in a far away country I turned into a female Basil Fawlty. I was shouting 'listen carefully I will say this so carefully that even you might understand it' and then spoke like a robot pronouncing the words very clearly indeed.

It makes me laugh now but it's no joke when have a problem to start with and can't get anyone to listen.

  • Comment number 35.

Its my turn to wear the ranty pants now, or maybe they are not befitting for what I am about to post.

Those of you that know me either here or especially on fb, know how passionate I am about the wildlife that I see every day mainly on the Somerset Levels.

I have followed the progress of the swans in particular and have filmed the various stages of them raising their families.

I have put quite a few photos on fb from the mother being on the nest to the cygnets first dip.

Most of the footage I have is on video and I dont have the expertise to transfer it onto fb.

The sharp spell that we all suffered from throughout December and into January meant the unfortunate loss of a lot of swans due to landing on motorways as they were unable to recognize the waterways as they were deep frozen. Some also froze into the rhynes, which was very upsetting.

But, this is nature and as cruel as it seems, that is what we have to accept.

What I have found out today though, is totally unacceptable.

There is a lowlife, I can only imagine there is one such sick minded person going around shooting these poor creatures with an air rifle. His victims so far, amount to 31.

Now it takes no skill to shoot these birds. Anyone who has seen my pics will know just how close you can get to them (if you dare!) so whoever is doing the disgusting deed is getting no target practice out of it.

The residents of Wedmore are so upset about this, as am I, that they have so far raised about £10,000 pounds for evidence that may lead to the identity of this, as I say, lowlife.

Terry Pratchett, has very generously doubled up the reward for the amount already raised, so hopefully, these poor swans can now be left alone to live in their natural habitat.

I am once more amazed by the levels that people will sink too.

I am out on the Levels all times of the day and night. I have never come across anything like this before.

Two small rays of sunshine amongst the gloom of today (although it was a beautiful day!) are that I saw the first horse chestnut 'in leaf' I even sat on the beach at Weston and texted the May show, although it didn't get a mention. The other was that I saw a whole, hillside covered in deer today and one was an albino, bless him. I'm not going to say where, I think its best sometimes to keep these things to yourself after todays occurrence.

This is my post reposted with the word changed..sorry modders!

    Evening each

GM watching footy on delay so have been catching up with a few of last weeks blogs..

firstly, MTF, the nasty person who is doing that to the swans ..well, apparently I cant say but...i really hope they find who it is..

JG - yay to everything going through and the step of taking your ring off. I bought myself a ring for my middle finger when I took my wedding ring off and I still wear it today. Keep smiling lovely..

Annie - congrats on the baby news!

Oh, I wish I could mention everyone....!

But slugs,.the GM has informed me today that `we`(!) dealt with them eating our hostas last year by putting sea shells around them..naturally salty and uncomfortable to crawl over too i would imagine! As all the hostas survived and looked gorgeous I guess it works!

And going way back to the books blog... Catcher in the Rye and Of Mice and Men for school... Judy Blume for teen yrs..anything crime nowadays! and the ones of you who mentioned `chick lit` authors..try Dorothy Koomtson(sp?) if you havent before..brilliant author!

And one last recommendation... a book called `One Day` by David Nicholls...i bought this in the spur of the moment early last year and loved it and have passed it around many of my friends... i now understand its being made into a film but i urge anyone who loves a good book to read it... i thoroughly enjoyed it.

right..footy finishing so time to dig out the chocolate and snuggle down..

Just had an email from amazon. There is now a Kindle community. A step too far maybe??

MTF, the 5yr old can be truly revolting at times. He stayed with me last weekend along with his 2 cousins and he brought a bag full of toys with him which included a rubber snake, a wind-up spider and a plastic rat, just to scare me.

Annie didn't realize that there was a Kindle community.that sound exciting .
By the way I havent asked for awhile ,how is your Kindle :)).x

You are going to have to pretend that you like them Annie and dislike things like flowers!!

    A bit of reverse psychology!

  • Comment number 70.

Oh yes Bids, he keeps them in his pocket - yuk. And, really, much as I love my Kindle (as you all know) not sure I want to be part of the 'community' - sounds a bit nerdy.

MTF - Noooooooo, can't pretent I like slugs, snakes, rats etc... He knows I hate creepy crawly things.

Annie, I agree with that. Nerdy!

Annie ,do you check his pockets when he comes to visit ,I'd be telling him to turn them out before he came in .
Can you imagine being asleep in bed and one of those slimy slugs sliding over you ,Yuk,Yuk.
I think you get enough out of your kindle for yourself and yes I agree you don't need to belong to the community ,don't want to loose you Annie.

I'm afraid I don't come into the category of the book reading fraternity, never really been interested ,But Mr B's always got a book on the go .
I'm more of a making things person ,sewing ,embroidery Curtains and such like .

Why do boys have to keep slugs and worms in their pockets and things in empty matchboxes.

Girls are far more civilised, how many like me kept caterpillars together with some nasturtium leaves in a jam jar?

There is definitely a bright golden haze on the meadow this morning.

Even the farmer is busy in the field opposite spreading something delightful with his tractor!!

So there wont be any washing going on the line this morning.

Not if I want to retain the aroma from the fabric conditioner anyway.

Just back from an early taxi run and time to get on with the rest of the day.

    Look sharp.

    Good morning

I'm not having a great week

other then all the 'big' issues that are in my life at the moment, first my phone broke and then my SIM card flew out of replacement phone and is now lost forever. So no agencies can call me and I have no way of accessing the outside world, I think I may go mad today.

Hopefully I can get out of work in time, and hopefully the people in the shop can help me get myself back online again

    Baggy :-(

    Morning all,

Slugs serve a purpose same as all the other bugs, crawlies and icky-yuks that we don't find hugely appealing. I find it a shame that we as a race are only too happy to destroy something if it doesn't fit in with us and our little bubbles that we call home. There is a bigger picture that we all should start paying attention to rather than concentrating on what suits 'us'.

Oh, heck. Its a long way down from this soap box!

MTF, my sympathy is with you, regarding the swans. We have had similar here - except the huntsmen here are partial to decapitating swans, geese and ducks, butchering the bodies to take the breast and then leave the rest in an undignified heap to be found by others (mainly my dog). To be fair, leaving the bodies does mean an easy meal for the foxes, carrion and other predatory animals and birds - but there is absolutely no need for these acts of slaughter. (I also believe the same people have stolen a fair few of my cats - but that really doesn't bear thinking about).

Also, in the past 2 weeks we have had 2 swans die when they have flown into our power lines - resulting in power cuts lasting at least 5 hours each. This has been down to the actions of our farmer, who currently have about 80 swans resident in the field next to us - including a black one. She creeps down the side of the field and releases air rockets to scare them away. The flock take flight and head towards our home and sadly 2 of them have not spotted the discs on the cables in time to avoid them. Another example of destroying something because it doesn't fit with her plans. They barely affect her livelihood as they tend to rest and graze on the area of field that has been left to lie.

    harrumph!

Anyway, slightly more cheery. How you all doing?

    MW, a!

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time Baggles (although I;m intrigued as to how a SIM card can "fly" out of a phone - I always struggle getting the wee blighters in and out!).

Can't you shut yourself away in an office somewhere and do a quick ring round of the agencies - you could always pick up a £10 SIM from ELH (usually at the checkout) as a temporary/emergency measure.

    There's always a way .... trust me!

Obviously, I don't know what your "big issues" are, but if you want to talk or email, you have my details.

I had a moment of heart failure myself this morning - I've just signed up for online banking and thought I should move my savings from the no interest account to the sort of a bit of interest account. It's the first time I've used online banking and managed to somehow lose the first transaction. I finally managed to do in 45 minutes what should have taken me 10, and only hope that the transaction only happens once ... or else there'll be lots of red on my next statement! Will check it from home tonight as I don't trust our IT network here to be sercure enough.

Oh, and I got woken up at 3.55 am by an app on Nic's phone to tell me that a match against I care not whom was about to begin, and been awake ever since. He slept through it!

Will be paddling in the good pond of bloggery today - yeeehaw!

Deev - old phone, loose back and clip for SIM card, I was also amazed as actually losing it but apprenetly there are more places to hide a SIM in a tigra then I thought possible. Hopefully should be back on line via the t-mobile shop tonight and thats the next time I can leave the office (month end worries today), so hopefully it will get sorted.

    Morning each

Well its a beautiful clear morning here... blooming frezzing but the sun is trying to get out....maybe it really is spring!

MW`a - I have nothing against slugs..until I stand on them or they eat my hostas...thats when they get a new home..be it heaven or next doors garden!

Deevs..i swear at a fruit phone thing regularly in the middle of the night...i have a lovely android with lots of apps on..but nothing that goes off at 3,30am.. unlike the GM who also needs to be told what the score is/he has an update or whatever`s going on at some unearthly hour. It used to be sweet nothings but now a regular conversation before sleep now is `have you put your phone on silent?` . Love him to bits tho!

Speaking of which..I got a new phone last week and have lost some random numbers..if i have had any of your numbers and you have mine please feel free to text me with yours..if that makes sense!

Right..these prices lists wont update themselves..maybe a brew and a biscuit will help...

Anyway..new price lists to be done today

Give me strength .... just went into the communal kitchen at work and one of the other tenants had just done himself 2 toasted bagels absolutely slathered in crunchy peanut butter! Looked and smelled fab but more calories than I'll have between now and bedtime!

Also in the communal fridge: a plethora of cream cakes.

    AAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!
